Christianity in a nutshell
by serotonin_wraith inlet's see exactly what people are holding so firmly to, while all the time believing they aren't actually deluded.. section taken from: .
http://www.richarddawkins.net/article,1816,are-the-new-atheists-avoiding-the-real-arguments,edmund-standing-butterfliesandwheelscom.
first, let's take a quick look at the basic biblical narrative:.

"if being a member of the KKK gives someone joy and happiness and fufillment, who is anyone to judge them for that?"
"if being a nazi gives someone joy and happiness and fufillment, who is anyone to judge them for that?"
"if being a suicide bomber gives someone joy and happiness and fufillment, who is anyone to judge them for that?""
You've got to be kidding me... Surely you don't actually believe being a Christian is as harmful as being a member of the KKK, a nazi, or a suicide bomber?I believe that a person could have those thoughts and beliefs, as long as they do not act upon them and try to inflict their view or behavors upon other people, that is crossing a line.
Surely you don't actually believe being a Christian is as harmful as being a member of the KKK, a nazi, or a suicide bomber?
SOME christians, yes. Some Muslims, some blah blah pick a belief system, even SOME atheists. Any belief taken to extreme and then acted upon, especially to the harm of others is just wrong. I also think that people with extremeist views may be borderline mentally ill.
Yes, SOME christians and religious groups mix their beliefs with politics, as do other religious groups.
For athiests who just want to be left alone, being bothered and harassed by Religious nuts can be taxing, but they need to realize, that is not all of that group, just the active and crazies. just as I'm sure not all athiests want to kill all religious people, but I'd be willing to bet money that SOME do, and have in the past.
Somebody brought up in another thread the culture as its written in the Star Trek universe. What does that universe have that we don't? Tolerance, maturity, an attitude of not interfering with the individual's way of being; as long as that individual reciprocates the same...I didn't say that the best way. The Wiccan rede could apply here, "An it harm none (including yourself), do what you will." There's more, but that's what I remember, well there's also "Be light of eye and soft of touch. Speak ye little and listen much." Which is similar to the golden rule of treating others how you want to be treated.
I wish that we all could just wake up and treat one another like mature adults, with respect, kindness, tolerance. But I ani't holding my breath.
I am not a christian or monotheist or blah. As far as the Bible god is concerned, I am an athiest; but also regarding Aztec gods, tribal gods, Roman gods, ect. But as far as strict athiests are concerned, i am not one of them either. My beliefs regarding my experiences and interpretations of reality are mine, not for sale, open for discusion but not by people who have locked in their own belief (or "negative" beliefs) and are seeking forced consensus.

Hypothetical right and wrong scenerio.
by Salivating Dog inif a gifted student graduates top of his law enforcement and ethics class....and is invited by the instructor to remain on as his aide.
what if his instructor starts doing exactly what he adamantly taught the aide was dead wrong to the next class?.
does the aide speak up and point out his teacher's hypocrisy and crime...in front of the entire class if nessesary?.

Leave or confront the instructor, but either way, have proof of the wrong and of what is taught as "right".

Drug Addiction- Meth addiction, Did You Know Someone Addicted? Dangerous!
by flipper ini felt it was good to start a thread on this as methamphetamine addiction has become one of the most abused drugs in our society.
unfortunately, from what i've heard is it is relatively cheap to make , not as expensive as other drugs, and highly addictive once a person is " hooked" they have an extremely hard time getting off it.
crank or speed as it is called makes people highly aggressive, mean spirited, and can make them violent.

I hate meth, I hate the people who cook it.
My sister is now in AA and NA, and I hope she makes it, but our family is so tired of her crap. She has burnt us out on helping her. She has made it very dificult to "like" her or "love" her.
She was dealing for a while too, not meth (that I know of), and her not-boyfriend--god what a F&%ktard. She really got mixed up with bad people, and kept making bad-destructive choices, compounding her problems. Her chaos was like a life sucking black hole. She may be clean now, and I hope she is, but her underlying mental instability is just OMG! My partner hates her and her crap, but a small part of me still holds hope that she can climb out of this pitt.
I don't believe that these people can be helped until they are first ready to help themselves, and that means not making things worse.

STOP THE MADNESS....where is this board going?
by SnakesInTheTower ini've only posted since feb 07..but i have lurked for several years prior and there was usually something interesting on the board.
as i was reading the active topics list this morning, only a couple things jumped out at me as interesting...its been this way since the dgate and tgate incidents.... i was discussing this with a long time poster via im yesterday....does it seem to anyone else that so many of the topics are ...i dont know....odd...or different than they used to be...and i dont mean that in a good way.. i miss the newbies coming on and telling us their stories.... i miss the long time posters updating us on their lives post-borg... i guess with the recent uproar, the lurkers are hesitant to become newbies (cant say as i blame them now...we probably scared them off , and maybe the vets are just as hesitant...after all, someone went 2 years with their fraud/hoax...who will believe anyone else now?
i hope this is just a temporary cycle on this board..i have read many many posts from the archives...i hope one day soon we can get back to a happy medium here.. by the way, i like the fluff threads, but these seem to be more and more sex related (maybe that word will wake someone)... yet they get all the attention....and then someone goes too far and it gets locked down by a mod and the poster restricted......(i am not a prude...just sometimes enough is enough).

This board is cyclical--did I spell that right?
I also tend to be here in cycles too. This past cycle has been rough, with all the scandals and hoaxes, and I've said to a few people in PMs that I've noticed the same cycle in life away from the board, in family events and local news. To me it "feels" like a mercury retrograde, but I don't think that is happening at the moment, the world just feels floopy to me.
The sex threads come and go, the political threads wax and wane, pic a topic, and you'll see gentle cycles. I don't know how many people go back and read stuff buried in the history here, you can spend alot of time, but it is interesting.

Movie about Christians and gay family members.
by darkuncle29 ini thought that some might want to see this.
i don't usually embed urls, so bear with me.. .
did it work?.
-
darkuncle29
It did work. Since my family are all out of the Borg, this isn't too much an issue for me, at least that I know of. I have family in the midwest who are very old conservative Lutherans who I'm not out too. So the last story kinda resonates with me.
Does anybody know how long that link will last? Do I need to copy the text for when the paper allows that page to expire?

Refute anti-gay Bible verses
by cloudblue inanyone done some research to refute the handful of anti-gay verses in the bible?
i've done a bit of research on the net.
i don't have the links handy, but most of them centered around the assertion that the original words in those passages were mis-translated.

Remember the old WT metaphor about food for infants and food food for mature people? Not to pick on cloudblue, but I don't think he's ready for what alot of you are saying, your words are more suited for someone who has traveled further away from the JW/WBTS/Bible world view. Our words are reflective of where we are on our path away from such a limiting belief.
I agree with the bulk of the comments, but if I were talking to a fresh JW looking for help or comfort, I'd take it slow, as crunching through the cognitive dissonance barrier can be traumatic, and its different for each of us.
