The world is bad the end is nigh - or is it?
by anglise inbrilliant site showing the history of the apocalypse.
http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm
according to isaac asimov's book of facts (1979), an assyrian clay tablet dating to approximately 2800 bc was unearthed bearing the words "our earth is degenerate in these latter days.

Thank you for the link. I shall read with interest.
The end of the world is not nigh. Things have always been the same. In some ways, it's better now than ever.
The only thing that has changed is media ; it's got better. Now we can see the badness in the world on television, in the newspapers, and everywhere we look. People of times past were not subjected to such media coverage.
When we get to 80, we shall fantasize about how when we were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and there was never such badness around when we were young. But there was, and there always will be.
The hoax of the time of the end has plagued mankind for too long.

"Why Are Jehovah's Witnesses So Sure That They Have The Right Religion?"
by minimus inthat question is raised on page 709 in the "proclaimers" book.

Hi.
It is because they have been conditioned to believe as such.
A prime characteristic of a mind control cult is that they embed in its members unique ideologies that make members feel special and one of a kind.
Remember when we used to use words such as 'the truth', 'great crowd', 'little flock', 'john class' and 'the faithful and discreet slave' ? All these words were designed to make us believe we are unique, that we are indeed the 'truth'.
Also, we were fed lies as to the bountious 'love among ourselves'. This is the biggest twist of fact in the Watchtower. Maybe it should read 'love among ourselves ONLY IF you are in the right circles and you pioneer and know the right people'. They hate to admit it, but there is an active class system at every Kingdom Hall.
Setting up things such as big conventions and assemblies, and going out on the 'door to door work' are all designed to make us believe that we are special. Having our own ministry bag from a young age, dressed in a suit, breeded to believe that we ARE the right religion. Its one huge roundabout of activity, all designed to impregnate on your mind that what you are doing and what you believe in is true. Anything else, everybody else is from Satan, in the hands of the Wicked one !
We can all be proud that we have managed to escape this terrible mind control cult.

Is becoming an XJW like growing up?
by ballistic indid your process of leaving the organisation and learning new stuff feel like growing up to you?
looking back at your time in the so called "truth", do you think you were misled or even "naive"?
even "innocent"?

Hi there.
I was going to start by saying 'in many ways' but surely that should be 'in every way'.
Although I would never say that I was innocent being a Witness. I knew all too well what kind of a world we live in. But in every way, leaving the organization pushes you into growing up.
For a start, you must search to find your real self. Being a Witness, you were never your real slef... you were self conditioned, designed and manipulated to think the way that those down in Brooklyn want you to think, and want you to act. I could never do this. I tried, I really did... but I just couldn't fit in to what they wanted me to be.
Deep down, I knew that my day of reckoning would come. By the time I left, I had gave over 75 talks, but I knew that I had to stop, I had to join the real world.
When I did, I began to look at people in a different light. These people weren't 'worldly', they are just the same as me!
I always kept one eye on politics, when no other Witnesses seemed to be doing so. I became gradually more passionate about what I believed... after beginning to read Crises of Conscience, I decided enough was enough and made a promise to myself that I would never go again. It's the only promise I have never broken.
I always said that Witness people, kids in particular, are soft like bread. One day, and everybody reaches that day, it catches up with them. It caught up with me. They have been raised in a controlled environment, protected from the elements of the real world. Unfortunately, this protection goes on and on as they are supported not to do anything in the 'world' and encouraged to engage in the 'pioneer work'.
When you leave something as controlling as this, its one hell of a shock to the system. Only those who have ever been involved in such a cult could ever understand ; I find it ever frustrating trying to confide in others about something they couldn't even begin to understand.

To me, this is just another example of somebody adding 2 and 2 together and getting yet another 'interpretation' of the Bible. I don't know why people get carried away about other peoples opinions for, because they are not worth any more or less than what our own opinions are.
When you are away from the JW's, you really begin to see the bigger picture don't you? Here we have a planet where almost everybody has some kind of answer, or 'truth'...yet nobody can really prove it.
You are right, it is refreshing to see other peoples opinions, but for me only refreshing because it backs up my own opinion... that is that its a total waste of time. Those words for instance can mean other things in Hebrew.... yet another example of somebody ready to pounce with their version of truth.
It is interesting to learn of Hebrew words, though. For instance, the name ISRAEL actually means 'FIGHTER of EL' ( Isra-el)
EL was a Canaanite High God, represented by a Bull... which is simply discarded as a pagan symbol nowadays. BETH - EL means House of El. It is by examining these Hebrew words that we can arrive at a bigger picture...that this God represented by a Bull later became known as Yahweh.
The hidden message of the Bible that screams out to us once we read it at face value is that in the beginning, man created God. Hidden codes and extensive pseudo biblical study are worthless once the foundation of such has been proved false.

Jesus - was he just an exceptional teacher?
by SM62 ini have been doing a lot of soul-searching lately.. i have never considered questioning the bible before.
as a child, i was taught that to question the bible was blasphemous.
but lately, since coming to this forum and reading all the various posts and links to other sites, i have started thinking really seriously about things.

DJ, I really do admire your faith.
I'm glad I found this site... it's interesting.
DJ, you said...
There are even writings about Him from the first century from those who did NOT even believe in Him, such as Josephus
But Josephus was born in 37 AD, about 4 years after Jesus apparently died. He didn't even see Jesus, so how could he comment on him ? The text in which he does comment on him is not in his early works.... in light of this, we cannot trust Jewish historian Josephus account of the miracle worker from Nazareth.

I have full respect for those who believe in Jesus, but I am wary of adapting such beliefs myself.
For instance, there are very little records that prove Jesus ever existed.
In saying that, if we are to believe that he existed, I couldn't think of him as any more than a ancient day David Blaine, with the gift of pyhcosis. We cannot prove the existance of Jesus Christ... maybe he was just another wannabee prophet who has the same value as Mohammed of Islam or Sidhartha of Buddhism.

Calling God By His Name?
by shamus inwhy do jehovahs witnesses insist on calling god jehovah?
would you call your father, dad, or whatever by his first name?.
if we were created by god and he is indeed our "heavenly father", then would it not be blasphemous to call him by his first name?.
