WOW! So many of you guys went to the Janesville and Cicero assembly halls!
I loved going to Hawthorne racetrack and watching the horses over at Sportsman's. Also, Hawthorne had an open air section way up top. My friends and I would tell our parents we were sitting with each other, then we'd head up to that section, where hardly anyone else was sitting, and do our own thing, mainly listening to our Walkman's and writing notes back and forth.
Janesville had the neatest landscaping. I used to walk outside and sit by the little waterfall and pool during the sessions. One time, Steve Hammond and I took off during the morning session and drove up and down the country roads. Nobody missed us! I always used to wonder what was behind the main stage. I should have gone exploring before I left for good. Anyone else remember sitting out in the lobby and watching the little kids wipe out on the flagstones after running too fast? Remember when they actually had coat check attendants? They did away with that when they did away with the hot meals, and turned the coat check room into a literature counter, I think. Anyone else remember watching home movies from Poland that "Brother" and "Sister" Bennett brought back?

Best, worst and weirdest assembly halls...
by Jamelle ina recent thread about the experience of attending the 1969 convention as a young child really started me thinking.
i have several fuzzy memories of assemblies i attended as very young child.
this got me onto the track of the rather odd, uncomfortable or even really cool buildings i have visited over the years as a result of those conventions.. so my questions to everyone are:.

~Mormons Not Laughing About Polygamy Comedy~
by FlyingHighNow ini find it hard to be sympathetic to polygamists who are offended by the hbo comedy.
for me the idea of mormon polygamy so disturbing, that i cringed when the california zephyr (amtrak) crossed the colorado/utah border traveling into utah, i immediately got the creeps.
it was just eery.

What I want to know is what they do with the spare men? Geld them?
Pretty much. People magazine did an article about it, a while back. They basically kick these boys out of the town and they're forced to fend for themselves or be homeless. A lot of these boys have been raised in secluded households and homeschooled, so they have no marketable training or education, and end up hustling or selling drugs to live.

Dan the Man, you're just the kind of geeky adorable that makes girls like me melt. I have confidence you'll trip and fall over that special someone at the bookstore, someday.

Thanks Sparky. Yup, that's me in the avatar, maybe I'll change it soon to give everyone a different view of me, just for some variety. I've never been especially pretty, so I try to be pretty on the inside, that's what counts. After all, looks fade, right?? If you're not a good person on the inside, then what do you have??

that's exactly why I spent my teenhood years working on my personality and wit. then, when my awkward stage finally passed, the whole package came together! I went and married a guy who spent most of his teenhood (okay, let's be honest, part of his adulthood) being the dorky loser. he came into his own, finally, and I was the lucky girl. nah, we're both lucky. we appreciate each other because we both know what it's like. and I think we make a cute couple.

I'm not offended at all. I admire your courage and and am very glad you can be honest with yourself and us. I'm very happy for you. I could not imagine having to hide my feelings from everyone about being in love. It would hurt my soul. I am really happy you can say this now. My sister is gay, and she was always angry and depressed. When she came "out" she became much happier and felt like a great weight had been lifted. Of course, she had to move to a town where it was more accepted. Our home town is very archaic. I followed her, and discovered a wonderful, openminded town where I am proud to raise my children. I hope you have a better life, from now on.

well the elders didn't search but an old aquaintenance did.
