It's less wild than all those stories about snail mail penpals falling in love in the old days. If anything the multimedia aspects of the internet make it even easier to get to know someone and 'hang out' with them.

Has Islam lead to an increase in Atheism?
by nicolaou inever since 911 and the subsequent attacks in bali, madrid, and london it seems that everyone feels they have a licence to criticise islam (they do).
fundamentalist and many mainstream christians deride the backwardness of a religion that creates suicide bombers and 'honour' killers.
of course, it was only a small group of hardcore islamist extremists that carried out these attacks but the whole community has been tarred by them, and perhaps in some sense it is only right that the majority of 'reasonable' and peaceful muslims do accept the part they play in providing the soil for these people to grow in.

Is it Islam or atrocities themselves that has lead to atheism? When thousands die in an act of terrorism it isn't surprising to me that some question god. And isn't the war on terrorism just turning into a holy war anyway with Bush calling them the evildoer?

Wedding Anniversaries vs. Birthdays
by PopeOfEruke injw's often have big parties or "gatherings" to celebrate wedding anniversaries, esp.
for the big milestones (20th, 50th anniversary etc).. the process of these parties almost exactly mimic a typical birthday celebration: the couple of honour sit up the front, various people give speeches, show "honour" to the happy couple, there is a meal and drinks, usually an anniversary cake.. exactly the same as a birthday party.. so why is it ok to celebrate an anniversary of a wedding but not the annoversary of a birth??
when it's usually the "wedding" which sooner or later results in a birth??

I honestly never even thought twice about it when I was a JW. Anniversaries were okay and birthdays were not that's just how it was.

virtual kingdom halls, the future of dubdom?
by Mysterious inhttp://virtualkingdomhall.com/enter.html.
.
just think no more buildings, land taxes, travelling speaker expenses, potential bad association, deviation from the main script..is this the future or will they continue to be technophobes?.

What about big screens piping in talks straight from bethel but into the kingdom hall themselves? No elders going off on tangents, no problems with watching from home, complete unity and spiritual 'food" right from the top.

DO YOU THINK THERE'S A CURE FOR CANCER?
by Mary indo you think the scientists, doctors and pharmeceutical companies know of a cure for cancer that they're not telling us?
when you consider the leaps and bounds in medical discoveries that we've made in the last 50 years, it seems incredible that they're still using chemotherapy and radiation as the treatment for cancer.. while i was one of the lucky one who has survived cancer (so far), it's always in the back of my mind that it could return.
we all have friends who died before their time because of this rotten disease, yet the only progress that seems to have been made is that they can now 'detect' it earlier, which of course gives you a much greater chance of survival.. there have been stories of people who have been cured through alternative medicine, yet no one in the medical field seems to be interested in anything other than chemo or radiation.

I have also heard of people go into spontaneous remission despite receiving no treatment so I am not sure what weight I would place on the testimonials of alternative medicine. I would think at the least the notoriety of "curing cancer" would push someone to run with this discovery if not the altruism.

What told you that no holy spirit was moving the BOE?
by Crumpet ini've read on and off here of various things that told people that god's spirit was not directing the organisation.. personally for me on the last time i got dfed it was the fact that i got reinstated by a meeting of the boe at the exact same moment i was smoking my first cigarettes in 7 months.
i didnt question it exactly but it did seem odd.
i mean i had no idea that they were discussing my reinstatement at that moment that i succumbed and had decided in my favour.

I wish I could have counted all those service shortcuts. Though I always lied and said I had talked to a classmate if I needed a few minutes to round up until the next hour of field service time...

Another J W e mail
by NikL ini noticed another thread on this site relaying a stupid e mail making the rounds of dubdom.. well i just got this one and i thought i would share.... powerful illustration.
after the prayer, the local elder slowly stood up, walked up to the.
platform and, before he gave his public talk, he briefly introduced a guest.

A good example of using emotional urgings to get a reaction and override logical thinking. Furthermore how unlike the way JWs are to save their own first in times of disaster, according to this example should they not be saving the wordly people first?
