I had to do the whole make marks under the names when they are said. When I got older I used to write a word down the side of the page then on the line I would write all the words the speaker said that started with that letter. I did that even when I was quite old..hell I was bored stiff. Mom never seemed to notice the anagram and figured if I was writing down words then I must be paying attention. My best friend and I used to compete to see who could write down the most scriptures the speaker said..I swear he cheated.

favourite games to play as a child during boring meetings
by Surfacing inmy parents were both very strict, and i wasn't allowed any toys at the hall.
my rations included a copy of my book of bible stories, and a pen and note pad.
my parents were strict to the point of not allowing me to draw pictures, i had to "take notes".

Peering into my past - Snippets from my early life
by Mysterious ini was going through my things the other day and i came across a journal i used to keep at quite a young age.
the mentality there is just scary.
i was quite the budding writer with my big words but can you see all the canned thoughts and phrases lifted from the dubs and dropped into my grammar and writing style.

When the Watchtower Society Celebrated Birthdays
by Kenneson incharles taze russell began zion's watch tower in july of 1879. but the earliest clue i could find in its pages that bible students celebrated birthdays was in the nov. 15, 1905 issue, which offered for sale copies of "heavenly manna" sugggested for birthday and christmas gifts.
on april 1, 1907 it was announced that the new edition of the "manna" would "contain the same texts and comments as the former one, but will have twice as many pages.
every alternate leaf will be blacked ruled, for use as an autograph and birthday record.

I saw on another thread that birthdays CAN be celebrated but are strongly discouraged.
I believe it was in relation to a JW wife being ordered to prepare a cake for her wordly husband. That's the only thing I have seen that indicated any kind of birthday celebration compromise.

Visiting other Halls
by Maverick ineven though the dubs are suppossed to be one big, happy, ( braindead) family i found visiting other halls quite interesting.
if i was moving i would check out the hall in that territory.
if i was on vacation or working i would find a hall nearby.

I remember always whining that one of my close friends always got to go to other halls when his father gave the talk and we never did. Even when we were on vacation we never did. But mother made sure we studied enough to make up for it.

Significant or not?
by robhic inmy jw girlfriend missed the recent (july or august) dc due to illness.
after she had had a visit by one of her friends who had gone to the convention i noticed a blank name tag on a table.
the visitor had left it for her as, i guess, as souvenier.

I think perhaps they want to appeal to the general public more.

my emotions are a roller coaster
by karategirl inwhen i first got on this site a few days ago i felt so much relief and joy.
i was even trying to help others right away because i have been out for ten years already.
now i am finding that other people's comments and memories are bringing up so many of my own that i have suppressed for years.

There is nothing more addicting than stumbling on a group of people that understand what you went through better than you could ever explain to someone who has never been there themselves.

Self Help Sources and JWs
by Mysterious inwhy is it that a watchtower article 40 years ago on raising kids has more relevance than a 3 day old copy of today's parent or the latest paperback in the bookstore?
but since the awake doesnt have dieting information the newstands are fair game!
over and over they say to stay away from so called self help sources that have a lot of good advice to feed them all this @#%@ from the magazines.

Wow all I can say is your mom sure is progressive in her thinking then. I know we've had a lot of talks on not turning to worldly self help sources in this area. Unless there has been new light in the last eight months.

THE WEAKEST LINK---fatal flaws in Watchtower Chronology
by Terry inwatchtower chronology suffers from weak logical links.
after all, they start with an unproven premise and begin linking and linking and linking and suddenly they produce the rabbit out of the hat.
1914 is the rabbit .

Of course his "true followers" would just know how to interpret it. Barf. Their bottom line is "because we say so" on their chronology.

Would you attend your own DF'ing/DA announcement?
by unbeliever inmy friend was summoned to a jc.
she did not go and pretty much told the elders to kiss her ass.
she wants to attend the announcement which is tonight.

. You know everybody holds their breath when, during the announcements, the announce that elder so and so has a special announcement. Everyone hangs on the edge of the seat waiting to see who's getting the axe
OMG you know they have to do it like that on purpose. Probably the only way to wake people up enough to get attention. Of course they do the reinstated stuff that way too dont they. I dont remember

If You Could Say One Last Thing Before You Die
by dh inwhat words would you choose to be immortalised by?

Mysterious
Is this going to be like a shakespeare play where you get to die then miraculously come back to life and say your last words to the audience then die again from your instantly fatal stab wound??
