I'm sure pictures of Cornwall are worth the wait, Celtic, and I will wait as long as it takes to see them!

How sick is this??!!!!!!
by outnfree init's coming up on three years that i've been borg-free (*humming now to "born free"* -- lol), and while sorting through some papers i found the following, disgustingly self-berating example of how the wt made many of its adherents feel-- lower than worms.
just look at how much i was beating myself up, thinking myself a failure as a mother, christian and wife.
it makes me positively ill now to realize how terribly unhealthy jw-land was for so many of us.

Good reminder of the spiritual and emotional abuse of being one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Thanks outnfree!!!

Were You Ever Counseled For Your Attitude or Because You Didn't Measure Up?
by minimus inone thing jws do, and especially elders, is counsel people.
everything is all about setting a person straight.
even bible students are conditioned to be counseled and to do the same toward any that ask them questions as to what they believe.

Come to think of it, I was officially counseled, together with my daughter, for talking and laughing with my disfellowshipped minor son at the Kingdom Hall. I wasn't supposed to even smile at him, and not even talk to him in the parking lot, even though we lived together, and rode together. We could talk once the car door and the windows were closed.
Brother.

I don't remember ever being counseled for my bad attitude, I just knew I had one about a lot of things, but of course, I felt justified!
They did mention once not to "interpret" any world events, as I was doing after 9-11. But mildly, and not directly to me alone.
If they bothered with me at all, they pretty much just seemed to try to be real nice. I didn't make it very easy for them, though, because of extreme shyness. I found it very very hard to even look at elders, except when they weren't looking!

I've arrived here seemingly by providence...heh heh.
by boa inits my first post and i don't really know where to start, there been so much on my mind.
i've been reading threads on this site like crazy and obtained a copy of coc from the library yesterday.
i stayed up until 4am reading it, and i'm impressed with the way it was written - its just like reading a w only the subject matter is a little different hehe.. i'll break myself in gently with this site over time but basically a few things about me are: born in a jw family, baptized as a young teen, 1 yr aux pio, several yrs as reg pio, 1 year as 'special' full time pio at bethel.

"The Harmony of the Four Gospels" Musical Public Talk
by seeitallclearlynow inminimus mentioned in the "apostates are infiltrating the congregations" thread that the meetings used to be interesting, with skits and such, and you know, i had forgotten that!
but they were interesting many years ago!.
we had humorous skits and attention-getting skits, and a lot more slide presentations way back when.. so this made me think of a talk that was very highly requested in our area, titled above.

Who's the Savior?
by JH in.
i was reading the list of things witnesses can't do, on another thread, and i noticed that it was written that jw's don't have jesus as savior.. as a witness, i always said that jesus was my savior, thanks to jehovah.. maybe it's been too long ago and i forgot, but who is the savior for jehovah witnesses?
jesus or jehovah or both?

JH, Witnesses are taught that Jesus is only technically the Savior of the Anointed; the other sheep, since they supposedly aren't born again and baptized with Holy Spirit, they aren't truly saved, since Jesus said at John 3:3,7 "Most truly I say to you, Unless anyone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God....You people MUST be born again."
It is only by the good that the other sheep do to Christ's brothers (the anointed on earth, and particularly, the Governing Body), that they have a chance of gaining God's approval and ultimately everlasting life on earth. But they will never have the true Christian reward of being with Jesus in his heavenly kingdom.
It's all completely unscriptural, of course, as there are not 2 classes of Christians. (The "other sheep" are simply the Gentiles who would also be invited into the Christian fold in due time.) But that's what the Dubs teach.

Hi blink! And a very big welcome to you!
Your dad sounds so much like my ex-husband. Very controlling and unable to fathom how anyone could have any questions or doubts about the Watchtower's teachings. Literally unable to grasp why others might see things differently. Pathetic. But, he was raised in an authoritarian household himself, not allowed to question things, and then the cult control of the Watchtower on top of that background, well....
What I've read is that "control freaks" are full of fear, motivated by fear. The conflict here is that JW's believe the Bible is truly God's Word, and the Bible teaches at John 4:18 that "there is no fear in love, but perfect love throws fear outside, because fear exercises a restraint."
People like your dad and my ex-husband (father of my children) feel that they must control others for their own good. They have no confidence in other people or any real faith in God to take care of matters. My son had a very hard time with his dad at your age, and under very similar circumstances. While I had a great relationship with my son, he practically hated his father. His father could not imagine that there was ANYTHING about himself that could possibly cause anyone not to like or trust him, so he too believed that I tried to poison the kids' minds, tried to turn them against him. But I never did any such thing! I knew that kind of thing is cruel to the children and is harmful to them and does no good.
People like that cannot believe that young people can see things for themselves, and will ultimately work things out for themselves. But they do, and you will too.
You might enjoy reading all the characteristics of cults that the WT Society matches up with, at Cults 101.
All the best to you!
