Dawn:
ROTFL, LOL! Great theory! Thanks for the insite and accompanying mental image. With all that smoke, they would have also acted as a great big bug repelant zone. The ancients would have viewed this freedom from bug attacks as a tramendous boon as the ancients were short in the supply of Off and other similar products. . LOL!

Yes, I have read that book, and a few others with a similar premise, the titles of which I can't recall. Fascinating stuff! Nice to meet another sci-fi/ fantasy fan.

Frogit:
I too am interested in stone circles, and have been ever since childhood. I read a lot of books as a kid, and many of them were fantasy/speculative fiction titles written by British authors. So, even as a kid growing up in the states, I was exposed to the mystery of the stone circles. These strange stone artifacts created by the ancients are indeed awe inspiring and mysterious. The sheer size and weight of the stones, and their exact placement, have for centuries fascinated scholars and everyday Joes alike. The mystery is two fold, how were such enormous stones moved, in some cases hundreds of kilometers, and then set in place with exacting precision, and why was such an endeavor undertaken in the first place.
Even utilizing modern heavy machinery and construction techniques, it would be nearly impossible to replicate the engineering feat inherent in the stone circles. This being said, how did the ancients, not possessing derricks and earth movers and the like, accomplish this impossible -- no not impossible because they exist -- task? Answer, um, um, [scratching head a bit] don't know.
Now then, to the why. What would have possessed a people to undertake such an endeavor. I have heard two sort of answers which are, fascination with time, and religious conviction. Today we have watches, with which we can meter out the hours of the day, and the days in the year. Each hour is neatly displayed on a little round thing adorning our wrist. Nifty, aye? Well, the ancients didn't have such contraptions; instead, they, so the theory goes, used the stone circles to keep track of time. This is easy to prove, too. All you need do is look at the position of the sun in relation to the circle to figure what, for example, is the longest or shortest day of the year. These specific days were of particular interest to the ancients because they coincided with the observance of the changing of the seasons, which symbolize planting and harvest, death and rebirth. Although this theory rings true, it seams a bit hollow, as if it were only a partial explanation of the whole. It also doesn't answer the question why we ... and this is second hand since I've never had the opportunity to visit a henge .... feel such awe, such connection, such, well power even, at the site or even thought of the stone circles, when today we wear those little watch thingies on our wrists.
Earlier, I alluded to the connection between the genre of the fantastic, and the stone circles. While I'm blithering on about the henges, I might as well tell you my favorite fantastic "what if" speculative idea involving them. What if somehow the henges are gates, doorways to another time and or space. What if we possessed the key to unlock these doorways and could cross the threshold of another reality and step into another world. Again, this is what if, but isn't it a cool idea?
Lastly, I'll mention this. Recently, a limestone circle, eerily like those that can be found in the British isles, was unearthed nearly 4,000 miles away across the pond in sunny southern Florida. Hmmmm, isn't that odd? It proves again how much more connected the ancients were than we would like to admit. As 21st century humans, we have this annoying superiority complex. We like and are more comfortable with the notion that we are the first to try to understand the cosmos, when we are really only rediscovering what was once lost to us all. And to think that none of this is mentioned in the Bible. Hmmmm.
We are so out of touch with reality, it's sad. There is so much obscured by time, so much that we can't even grasp just waiting for us, maybe on the "Oooooooo" other side of the circle.Edited by - aluminutty on 3 August 2002 10:57:29

I find it a bit more than slightly amusing that from one side of the mouth you hear 83% this, and 93% that, and 6 irregular publishers VS 11 irregular publishers, etc. while from the other side of the mouth the contradictary admonishment warning of the parells of worldly association. How much closer to worldly can you get then obsessing over numbers? If numbers were so important to big G and his ilk, then wouldn't all good christians experience a minny rapture when doing their taxes? HMMM, are their world wide 144,000 tax agents? Oh my God, I've got it. Eureka, let's start a religion.

Watchtower in NY By Law has to turn in Pedo-Files
by YoursChelbie inin response to an enquiry, i received this e-mail today.
does this prove beyond any doubts that the watchtower's entire list of pedophiles names, in brooklyn headquarters, has to be turned over to appropriate law enforcement officials?
by their failure to do so, is not the wts clearly breaking the law?

Am I just jumping the gun? 23,720 and counting alleged cases is a large number. Statistically, then, there must be at least 1 case which would fall under the juristiction of NY state. Would there have to be more than 1? -

SYN:
Don't be so bleak. J. R. Brown(noser) and other watchtower skum have already admitted that such a list exists. If the list is somehow shreaded, or erased, wouldn't the Watch Tower and/or the officials incharge be charged with obstruction of justice. I say persue this avenue, doggedly. They have made a history of backing the weak in to the corner, its about damn time the tables are turned, don't you think? Could someone compose a letter to the NY atty general, or the prosicuters for the city of Patterrson NY, or Brooklyn, NY. There has to be some official, somewhere -- I'm not at all clear on juristiction, etc, -- whom may be *extremely* interested in all of this pedofile protection nonsense the WTBTS is accidentally, on purpose, supporting. Come on, lets yield up to Caesar, lets yield up real good. -

Hey anyone? Hope this isn't too off topic, but why is smoking a disfellowshipping offense, anyway? I don't recall anywhere in the bible specifically mensioning, much less prohibiting smoking? I won't accept any "body as temple" explanation, either, since it just doesn't fit. No pun intended, but, there are a lot of overweight dubs, and being overweight isn't exactly respecting the "temple", is it? Sure, smoking isn't good for you, but, should it prevent you from living on the silly paradise earth construct. Am just trying to be logical, here, and I'm having a real problem seeing the justification for the smoking bann. Well, I guess this isn't the surprise of the century considering the organization we're discussing but...

I spoke to Joe Anderson...
by Littlebit injoe anderson thought you'd like to know what caused him to be invited to attend a judicial hearing held in his honor.
fyi, joe sent a copy of his resignation letter to two governing body members, dan sydlik and jack barr, men who joe and barbara were quite friendly with.
he thought that since so much time had passed since barbara's appeal letter was given to the local elders and nothing was happening to bill bowen or barbara, that maybe these gb members were holding things up because of receiving his letter and giving more thought to the whole issue.

Actions truly speak louder then words, don't they. J. R. Brown can state, to the press even, that the WTBTS has an "agressive child protection policy", and somehow look in the other direction, when the society takes action against those who protect the children. It really makes me wonder how the watch tower higher ups can sleep at night. Maybe they can't, and crazyness brought about by sleep deprivation is to blame for their continued ineptness in dealing with this matter. More likely, though, its just lothesome greed for power.
Its all so sad. Joe, Barbara, and Bill have given their lifes to this damn organization, and for what? Watch tower leadership, the local elders, just don't care. The only things which hold any value to watch tower leadership is power, authority, and the immage of the org. Damn the victims for they are beneith the radar, they have no power, and do not count. Damn the victoms' champions, for they dare to question higher authority, which could ultimately jeopardise someone's power.
This whole child abuse cover-up situation often gets me to angry to speak, and quite frankly it really brings me down. I personally am not being persicuted by the thugs in Brooklyn, and I still, daily, want to kick some major A**. I don't know how Joe and Barb have remained so calm, so controled through out this whole affair. I do know, however, that their actions have done major good towards forwarding the cause. They appear the calm, collected, right thinking adults, in the public's view of the abuse scandle, while the WTBTS look worse then spoiled children.
Barb and Joe, keep up the great effort, and God bless your actions. You are now working towards something with real purpose, the safety of JW children, not some poorly crafted psudohope for eternal life e.g. the watch tower. Despite the demonic eforts of the watch tower leadership to thwart you, you will prevail and the children will be safe.

Um, thanks, but no thanks, at least not now. I'm at work, and while I do have a garbage can conveniently tucked beneeth my desk for just such occasions, once I start, I may never stop projecting plumes of puke. The can would fill and overflow, and that would leave me in the precarious position of having to explain not only the foming flood of vomit bubbling about the flor of my cubical, but the extended break I've taken to reply to your post. It just isn't worth the trouble, that's all. <grin>Edited by - aluminutty on 19 July 2002 15:39:15

go back to school. I hear your teacher calling you. Today's lesson is that there is a vast gulf between "porn" and pedofelia. Tomorrow's lesson, there is a (gasp) equally vast gulf between pedofelia and homosexuality. Hurry, I fear you are already far behind the intelictual curve on this one.
PS
Please, et a clue, and if that isn't an option, don't post. You and your ilk are giving me a cluster head ache.
