but, unknown to me, my old anti-virus program was not updated due to my subscription running out, and my getting lazy about staying watchful.. so, i installed a new security program.

I was getting Spammed from this board. It was so bad that I had to shut down my original screen name that I registered with. What seem to happen was that someone got into JWD forum and piggy-backed about 1,000 messages to me - all identical messages. This happened about 5 or 6 times before I had to shur it down.

As for Moles, I have no doubt that they are around. On H20 we called them Watch Tower Trolls, and it became evident who some of them were. But, I am not certain that any Society 'Moles or Trolls' are seriously trying to Hack any of us, but I would not put it past them.

On H20 there were some who 'openly' threatened to shut the system down via their hacking capability. They were not taken too seriuously, but then somehow, shortly after a couple of threats, H20 did experience serious board complications that took them off-line for a few days. It could have been a hacker, or just coincidence. You can never really know for sure unless your system tracks this stuff.

H20 was a shell account on some site, and they may not have had the same level of control and monitoring that private PC owners have. I don't know for sure what kind of set-up they had. Also, a British ex-JW site was shut down for unknown reasons until the site owner was able to prove that his ISP was influenced by WTS people there. When H20 first went down just as the pedophile issue heated up, I speculated strongly that it was the WTS, but, I was in error.

The greater concern I have with Trolls and Moles is not so much whether they can or will hack a system or forum like this one, but that any who may be involved in any activity that concerns the WTS might slip and say things they should not. For example, an active Elder who disagrees with the Society might accidently say something that tips them off as to who he is, and then remove him as an Elder. But, even that is not too likely.

Conversely, the WTS needs to be far more concerns with the fact that so many active Elders and others are in total disagreement with their religion and are active on-line. - Amazing

Here is just one among many notifications I received today, and some as recently as in the last 10 minutes:

5/25/01 16:53:09 Filter Rule "Default Block Backdoor/SubSeven Trojan" blocked Inbound TCP connection: Remote address service is (23.7.291.313,4325)

As I noted in my previous post, I get 15 to 20 of these kinds of things everyday, some are identified as Hack attempts, and others are viruses, etc. What many people do not relize is that the address service is traceable. - Amazing

How sad H2O has become!

ihardly ever look at h2o now that all the interesting posters are here, but i took a look today for old time's sake: how utterly changed the place has become!

a handful of messages on the front page, many from the evangelical (or worse, the joshua92's) crowd.

where is the volume from the old days?

Yes, I miss the old H20. I liked the format better than coolboard. I could see the thread extensions easier and somehow, it was just the place to be.

A couple of months ago Farkel allerted us to this board, and I like this one better in many ways. The old crowd is here, and there is no moderator activity, or at least none needed. I recon it shows that when you have few or no rules, people rise to the ocassion and bahave better.

But the saddest aspect of H20 is watching the fundies and the self-appointed speakers for God take over. They just don't get it, 'We don't want to be preached to, or read 400 pages of why someone thinks the Society should reschedule Armageddon for 2001, or 2001, or some other year. And I hope that the people who have taken over H20 stay there. - Amazing

Hi Between: I would still get Norton Internet Security 2001, Version 3.0, if I were you. I would not use any downloaded version, but buy it as a CD. Norton allows one year of free downloads for new virus definitions and anti-virus and anti-trojan repairs. It is estimated that at least 50 new viruses and Trojans are produced each week.

I would do this in addition to the router firewll, because viruses can sometimes be passed on in other innocent ways. Sometimes, when accessing certain web sites and data bases, I have to lower my Security, and the anti-virus is there in case something passed through. - Amazing

This case goes back many years, and illustrates how JW Elders can and do go create appearances for their own benefit. here is a case where both the Elders and the Society men acted in the same way, but for different reasons.

We have all heard or used the expression, ‘their (management’s) right hand does not don’t know what its left hand is doing. This is likely a twisted play on what Jesus said, but is done in sarcasm to illustrate how people in an organization do not coordinate well and work together efficiently. Sometimes, it refers to doing something underhandedly. But, Jesus was talking about doing good works in secret and not trumpeting our good acts in public for mere human recognition.

Some JW Elders, on the other hand must have taken Jesus words in a way that made it look like they were doing something good, when in fact they were harming the interests of the congregation and some individuals.

A particular Kingdom Hall was pressed for parking, and in fact really had none except for a few spaces. I believe it was one of those conversions from a residential house to a Hall. So, the PO tried to negotiate a purchase with the property owner of an adjacent lot that had become vacant. The property owner did not want to sell, but did agree to Lease the land for the congregation’s parking use. Fair enough – I guess. The PO of course was given praise and honor for his ability to care for the interests of the congregation, and by extension, kingdom activity.

The Elders signed a long term Lease for many years. And the congregation was stuck paying the rent for the entire lease term. Even if they move, they would still be obligated to pay, regardless, unless they could sublet the lot. But in this case, subletting would not be easy.

One Day, the PO was removed along with the whole body of Elders. The PO was eventually disfellowshipped. I do not know all the reasons for this action, but I understand that this PO was among those few that managed to keep the PO position after the change from the old Congregation Servant arrangement when they were supposed to rotate. This and other issues triggered the Society to look into the matter. Along with a few letters from an Elder in the congregation who was keeping the Society notified of various shenanigans.

The Society eventually sent in a new team of Elders to keep the congregation operating. They even removed the Elder who was tipping them off, so as to have the appearance of not being biased toward any Elder. They told the Elder privately that in a few months he would be restored as an Elder. This way the congregation would not know that he was the one keeping the Society informed. The Elder was a good friend of mine and an honest person. He moved away, and did not accept any restored appointment.

While the Society men were there getting a handle on things, they discovered that the parking lot next door was leased to the congregation, and upon further investigation, discovered that the PO was the real owner. And they had to honor the lease anyway.

So, yes the PO did a favor for the congregation, sort of. And when he got the boot, they still had to pay him. I heard that the PO also owned the land that the Kingdom Hall sat on, but I was not able to confirm that part of the account.

The Deception: It is pretty obvious that the PO was not honest in disclosing all matters and parties while negotiating for the congregation. But, to me, the way the one faithful Elder was removed for the Society's PR sake was also another deception. If a man is a good person, doing what is right, and meeting the qualifications, I would think that the congregation would have benefited from knowing that he was the one really acting in their best interests. But the real lesson here is not about good Eldership being trashed, but about pure human politics and human organizational posturing. God and his kind ways are the last things that come to these people’s minds. - Amazing

If you have no Internet Security, about the only way you would know is if you picked up a Virus or Trojan from the Internet (this is providing that you never use a Floppy in your 'A' Drive from another person. Getting a Virus or Trojan of itself does not mean that you have been 'Hacked], but does indicate your vulnerability. Hackers can enter through 'back-door' unused ports.

Who are the Hackers?:Typically, Hackers come in five basic flavors, those who are just nosey and sporting around, and those who are criminal and are looking for credit card and other personal information, the Government when it feels the need to spy on someone, or on a more rare ocassion, a person working for an institution of some sort (e.g. religious cult, who is trying to determine some information on those they call enemies), and private investigators hired to get information on another person or organization (e.g. a married person spying on their spouse).

Definitions:

1. A Hacker is someone who can get access to your PC via remote operation, such as through the Internet or even a secured network line, and can read your hard-drive data, etc. This has even happened to the Government, notability the Department of Defense, where spys have gotten into military stuff and wreaked havoc. Hackers of the general nusiance variety will also send out Viruses and Trojans much the same as a vandal will sets fires or spray paint buildings.

2. A Virus is a code sequence or routine, often an Executable file, that mimicks common files, but contains anything from a harmless nusiance, such as forcing your cursor arrow to run all over the screen on its own, or swear words appearing on the screen from nowhere, to serious viruses that disrupt your primary operating system, destroys files and data, and can shut your system down.

3. A Trojan is what the name implies. The Greeks fooled their enemy one time by sending what is called the Trojan Horse. The enemy received it as a gift and it looked real cool. Then at night, when no one was on watch, soldiers insided the giant horse climbed out and destoryed the city. In a similar fashion, a Trojan Virus will be accepted as acceptable by your PC, and then at some predetermined time or during some operation, it will trigger a sub-routine that will cause trouble. It was a Trojan that activated when my Anti-Virus tried to quaranteen it. And it shut down my operating system.

If you have Internet Security of some sort, then you can erect Firewalls, stop Hackers, shield away Viruses and Trojans. In just one typical day, I get at least 2 Security Alerts resulting from an average of 3 Hacking attempts and about 15 to 20 attempot to deliver Trojans. All of it happens while I am on the Internet.

My system is able to trace the unique Internet transmission code and at times identify the ISP / Email address of the Hacker. Most good Hackers use various anonymizers to shield their identity. But some are stupid.

If push comes to shove, the transmission code can be traced to the ISP that provides the Anonymizer service, and with a Court Warrant, they can be forced to reveal the identity of the Hacker. But this can only be done if a crime has been committed. Attempted hacking on private citizens is usually not a crime. A successful Hack is a crime if the Hacker gets information such as credit cards or causes a system to shut down.

Some have asked me what I use to protect my system. It is a combination of a common software sold in retail outlets, and some of my own proprietary development for my own personal use. I won't share it or sell it. One the routines are out there, then Hackers can devise ways to get around it by studying the program. But, if no one has the program, then Hackers are hard pressed to get into my system.

Recommendation:For the best protection and functionality, I recommend Norton Internet Security 2001, Version 3.0. I paid $50.00 + tax for mine.

I do not use the Utility because I don't need it. Most Windows Systems have an adequate utility built in to the operating system. I no longer use McAfee. They have a good system, but in my opinion their "Nuts & Bolts Utility sucks and it uses too much RAM and slows my system way down. Norton on the other hand stays out of the way.

By the Way Just as I have been typing this I have another Security Alert. It is someone trying to Hack me with a Trojan. Cool!

This point was one of several milestones that led to my leaving the Watch Tower religion. The Society in the Watchtower magazine had published its rules to 'hate' apostates the same way as King David 'hated' the enemies of Jehovah.

However, Jesus Christ overturned this provision and gave a new commandment at Matt 5:43-46, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shalL love your neighbor, and hate your enemy:' but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you; that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love them that love you, what reward have you? do not even the publicans do the same?"

In Israel, when a Rabbi (which Jesus was called) says, "but I say to you" the Rabbi is essentially overturning a previous rule or teaching. So, the WTS is completely wrong, and they demonstrate their selfish approach to Scripture for the benefit of organizational policy over and above concern for truth and people. - Amazing

What about the scriptural obligation to preach?

i've always been taught that each disciple of christ has a scriptural obligation to preach, and to do so in imitation of jesus and his disciples.

they did this by house to house, in synagogues, and in the marketplaces.

this is one thing that has always kept me close to jehovah's witnesses.

Hi: The Apostle Paul asked this question: " Now you are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God has set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?" 1 Cor 12:27-30

Some transaletions use the word Evalgelizers in these verses. The point is, not all receive the same calling. Not all have the same gifts, not all members serve the same function. So, the commission to preach in Matthew 28:19-20, whihe general in nature to ALL Christians, not all carry out the same functions to accomplish that work. So, the Watch Tower Society insistence that ALL go door-to-door to carry out their preaching mission is in error.

Also, the Society fails to tell the JWs that Christian denominations not only have many who witness, preach, teach, and serve as missionaries, but that the churches are often far more successful in this than anything the Jehovah's Witnesses have ever accomplished.

HI Randy: Excellent post, especially your reply to Mr. Twit. As I spit more coffee out my mouth reading this thread, I sadly recall a similar letter I wrote in 1969 to my Priest renouncing my Catholic baptism. I still have that letter somewhere. Maybe I should post it. The good news is, after I left the JWs 25 years later, I found the Priest and called him to apologize. Funny, though he had not talked to me in a quarter century, as soon as I mentioned who I was and my former JW background, he instantly recalled my letter. That is how bad and evil my letter was. I felt strange when he gave me absolution over the phone ... I was only seeking forgiveness from him. Nevertheless, his kind Italian voice was so good to hear, and good to see how he maintained a Christian attitude. - Amazing

I have come to believe that Mr. You Know loves to parrot standard Watchtower party line because he wants people to see what a joke the religion is. He is kind of a religious parody, that is, he pretends to support it so people will see how idiotic the Watch Tower Society really is. Or, You Know is a braindead, mind-numbed, idiot who fails to obey his sexually perverted masters in the Great State of New York.
