Catholics on Big Love

andre's thread on jws vs catholics reminded me for some reason of last night's episode of big love.. did anyone else relate to nikki's response to her son playing with a cross?

it was as if she was possessed by a jw demon or sumthin.

and her whole attitude toward the catholic faith reminded me of how jws react.

Rabbit, Thats what I never got when I was a kid growing up a JW, the cross is to remind us that Jesus died for our sins, why would that offend anyone?

Even recently, I've found myself criticizing, especially the Catholic cross (with Jebus on it) to my wife (never-a-dub). But, after seeing 'Nikki' react like that...I realized I still have a ways to go to rid myself of JW thinking.

I think the WT cult's idea was to put a little more division between 'us' ...and the world. And it's an effective one...I remember so many talks where the elder would say, "If your loved one was murdered, would you wear a symbol of the weapon used to kill them ? " It's something disgusting you can picture in your mind, then look down your 'holier than thou' nose at those "evil worldly people."

It's one of those cult lessons hard to let go of...I consider myself open-minded, but, obviously not enough to 'allow' someone to use their own choice of an icon, to remember and honor something important to them.

I was thinking the very same thing...Nikki was scared of that cross ! And did you notice one of the reasons why she was so disgusted ? She was comparing wearing the cross, as the instrument of Jesus death...she said, "...why not just wear an electric chair around your neck !?"

I was shocked...THAT is the exact 'reasoning' I was taught as a JW. I used to expand that to a hangman's noose, a gun or even a knife. Do they think that, ....too ?

* Invitation to Follow Christ Convention/ Ridiculous *

while i was visiting my friend last evening.

on her table was an invitation to the follow christ convention for jehovah's witnesses.

now i know that evelyn's sister is a jw from chicago, so i figured that is who the invitation was from.

A close friend of ours (which means she knows more about the WTS than she ever wanted to know) called us to say she had been invited to the Convention in Amarillo, TX. It is 250 miles from where she lives in Midland.

She said a couple of middle aged JW's showed up Saturday morning and had just started their presentation...my friend says, "Fine. I'll take it." And she pulled it out of his hand and as the door was shutting...she noticed the "disgusted look on his face".

He got off lucky. He didn't know it at the time, but, he really didn't want to hear what was on her mind. She's very upset at what this "Christian" religion has done to my family. And she usually lets you know what she's thinking.

I'm certain that couple simply, "shook the 'goat' dust off their clothes" and mentioned something about "bird food" as they went to the next house. Damn...I cannot believe...*I* used to do that, too.

Oh, well...I'm feeling much better now.

Out of curiosity, what sect of Islam do you belong to ? What do you think about Sharia Law ? What do you think about Muslims being able to impose Sharia Law on their members in other countries, like the US or England ? Is it something only fundamentalist Muslims adhere to ?

You seem a little quiet about your own beliefs about female circumcision, so, what do you believe ? Do you think Muhammad was wrong...not to condemn this practice ? Would you consider circumcision for yourself...if it was "required" by your faith ?

I don't mean to be too personal and I'm not trying to fight, since you are Muslim, I think you would be able to clear up any misconceptions. It just seems to me (who has a lot to learn) women already have hard enough times as it is in other male-dominated religions...Islam takes women rights's backwards, IMHO.

I'm trying to understand the point I was trying to make - lol.

LOL...me, too. It was a pretty big, general question, but, I tried to guess what you were looking for.

What concerns me is the thought that here in the west despite secularisation we haven't as yet been able to rein in fundamentalism. How can we expect countries like Iran that are dominated by fundamentalism to fare any better.

Bingo ! Christian fundamentalists cannot see their own faults, nor can they see what harm their beliefs cause. But, they sure can points fingers of blame, at the faults and harm others' beliefs cause. Islam, imo, does the very same thing...their priorities are different...they go way overboard being so strict on women and sexual stuff.

I wonder if the time will come when we'll hear Iranian men and women wondering as we do how they could have done the things they did in the name of fundamentalism.

I think that generations of people will have to live and die, slowly evolving away from such draconian dogma. For me...totally, finally getting away from people that live and spew fundamentalist ideas, including any Bible or Koran thumpers is the only way to revert back to a human decency... I think most people are born with.

i've met some wonderful friends here at this forum, but it's time for me to put the jw religion to rest.

it will be 15 years this october that i daed myself which in retrospect i wish i wouldn't have done as there are some former sisters who i would love to give a big hug and talk with who are in pain mentally, but i can't.

i agreed to their "rules" when i was baptized.

As a JW in the not too distant past what was your attitude to women?

Good question. I was always sure that I was 'better' than the average guy. I know I was better (nicer) than my Dad. But, I was surprised when my children (who shun me) told me years later that, "...you used to be so controlling...everything had to be your way." Yet, today they cannot understand 'why?' I have changed so much for the better. That makes me wonder just how bad I really was...I do know I thought I was doing what God wanted. The man was supposed to be the boss and I tried to model myself after the other men in the congregation. My kids know I don't go to the KH anymore, suspect apostasy and yet don't/won't make the obvious connection on 'how' I've changed so much -- for the better. I'm not DF/DA. Rabbit

I, for one, think it's true and damn funny at the same time !

Sure...the WT would love to 'catch the bad guys', but, think about it...there have been leaks like Niagara Falls from Bethel for a long, long time. They are the paranoid... looking over their shoulders...at everyone ! "Demons"have infiltrated their ranks...from the... doesn't count "new study" to lowly publishers, Pioneers, MS & Elders, PO's, CO's, DO's, ZO's and even Anointed GB members. All of these have left with WT Secrets and gladly shout out a warning at the biggest house-to-house campaign ever -- the Internet.

Us faders (I think we've coined a new word -- can't find it in a dictionary) pretty much know who might turn us in (out of a misguided type of love) ...our JW relatives and friends. If we're careful what we say, we may be a little safer in our quest to remain un-disfellowshiped. That is not being paranoid, we simply love having access to... well, loved ones.

However, the WT does have a little experience in Theocratic Warfare, remember, they use that in easy countries like the US, as well as past Communist countries like the USSR. Face it...they are practiced deceivers and liars. I think they would ID countries, regions and states that are problematic first, then, work their way down. For instance, us Texans must seem like a stirred-up fire ant mound to them. We have, I think, more ApostaFests, more often than any other place. Why ? Are the DO's, CO's being too easy/hard on 'their' congos ? Are more Texans demonized ?

Whatever. The leaks are just too many, too fast. Recently, I've seen 2 posts here at JWD from Russian & Brazilian apostates who have Internet forums set up to help JW's get out. The Internet, "...goes to where the need is great," too.
