embeth,
I missed the smurf JW smurf era, but when my daughter was young there was a ban on "care bears" in our area. While these toys and cartoons may appear innocent (it was said) they were leading children towards demonism, because one bear had a four leaf clover on it I believe and the another had a valentine's heart on it (something along those lines). While the strictest of JWs heeeded this warning I think even a few JWs thought this was a bit of a stretch . I was new then and was trying my hardest to be a good little borg, so we didn't have any care bears around--just in case. The Disney movie "the little mermaid" was also causing quite a stir in the congos in our area. Too much magic involved in that movie it was thought, and it was also believed that some of the kids were displaying unusual interest in this movie and wanting to possess some of the Disney toys which were put out then of characters in the movie. Of course this was a sure sign that this movie had something to do with Satan's influence and there was a lot of paranoia around that one too. JWs really need to get a life.

Do you remember when you first Googled "Jehovah's Witnesses"?
by Funchback ini remember when i first googled "jehovah's witnesses".
i was sick to my stomach because i feared that i was disobeying jehovah.
although i was scared that i would find something "apostate" or "demonic", i still continued to click on different links.

I was in a bad state of mind desperately looking for some sort of help--maybe some sort of therapy that could help me. I couldn't stomach going to one more meeting or one more talk with the elders and I figured there was something really wrong with me for feeling that way. I felt totally alone. I was shaking, heart pounding, dry mouth--scared to death of running into some rabid foaming at the mouth apostates.

What Terms Do Jehovah's Witnesses Use To Indicate They Are A Cult?
by minimus in.
"the organization" is one of my favorites.
very "cultish" expression, to me.......and you??

Example: "I'm going to ask My Bible Study/Return visit to come to the meeting."
Total depersonalization and a symptom of typical cult recruiting.
How about when your non-JW husband is referred to not as your husband but your "unbelieving mate"? Then there are those "worldly relatives" "work-mates" "school--mates"--none of these people are referred to as personal friends or family--of course not! they are all considered to be "bad association"

On a more personal note...
There are 2 people from my town that were traveling in those areas of Thailand that were hardest hit. One of them was a woman who befriended me after I left the Org. She is a very kind and loving person and she opened her heart to me and made me feel like a worthy individual and friend. I have become close friends with her over the months. She is well loved in this town and many people are very worried about her, since she was staying in one of the hardest hit areas. It is strange though how the WT keeps creeping in on my thoughts about this. My first thought was that the Org will use this as leverage to scare their members into being more obedient (more disasters--the end is near). Secondly their will be some emphasis on the ressurection of those who lost their lives--"at least now these people will have the chance of being ressurected" they will say amonst themselves. They will also beat their drums about their disaster relief (which isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to the Red cross, etc. But on the same note I am grateful to whatever help they will offer to anyone in need--I will not deny them that commendation though I do not approve of their self exaltation over it.
About my friend. She is/was a kind and loving person in this life, but according to the WT Organization she was not even worthy of JW association and would not have been worthy to live through Armegeddon. So, basically the WT is saying these people are better off dead. Anyway, that thought is making me angry right now. I want to see my friend again. She helped me a lot. I hope she is OK. The WT Org is sadistically twisted on these issues.

"Brainwashing " thread......Part 2
by logansrun inso, if a friend comes up to us and says, ?you?re an idiot!?
and we feel sad and angered after this incident we are likely to say that our friend made us feel sad and angry.
we made ourselves feel sad and angry.

OK...so why am I back on this thread--was going to leave it alone, but I am here again for some reason-maybe just feeling a little argumentative tonight.
In the Encarta Encyclopedia it says this:
brainwashing Inducing somebody to believe or do something, such as buy a new product, especially by means of constant repetition or advertising.
I have always felt that the above meaning was accurate, but I guess I would say that the word means different things to different people. I remember back in the 60s my grandfather telling me about how the music of the day was brainwashing the youth (he wasn't a JW either) Interesting thread anyway. Made me think about some things along the way, but I think my brain is tired now--goodnight.

Em and A are easy beginning cords to learn.
Thousands of songs were written G-C-D
A good basic strumming tecnique is boom-chuk-Uh-chuk-Uh (someone taught me that years ago and it was a big beginner's breakthrough for me) --as it helped to make sense of the rhythm.
On the "boom" you hit the base string in the cord (one of the fat strings) on the "chuk" you stum down the rest of the strings--on the the "Uh" you strum up quickly and then repeat...chuk (down)-Uh (up) and then back to the "boom."
good luck

I think we as JWs were all well trained in arguing over words and winning debates...I think this thread proves that we are still doing it to one degree another. Maybe we are still under the trance

Welcome, ericn.
Yes, the majority of people on this site are former JWs and many of us come her for support because we feel that the religion has caused a lot of damage in our lives and in the lives of others. Your questions are all valid and logical and a real JW (as I once was) would have an answer to each one of them (though not particularly valid or logical). They would use the bible to defend their arguments, though some of the scriptures used would not make a lot of sense. The religion itself has many rules and regulations all used to control its members lives to one degree or another. You sound like a nice person and it is kind of you to be respectful of your mother-in-law. The best thing for you to do is just to let her be. She is living in her own world and will not be easily shaken from it and if you try to reason with her she will not listen to you --no matter what information you have about her religion (even documented proof)-- or she will view you as wicked because she will think you are trying to shake her from her faith. There are many reasons people join up with this religion. Either they are born into it or they have a need that has not been fulfilled in their lives so they are more easy for this Organization to manipulate in one way or another. It's rather a sad state of affairs. I no longer engage JWs in any sort of religious discussions, as I find it to be fruitless and frustrating.
The best to you,
