Barry,
Fascinating. Oddly enough, the SDA church is a cult itself. It is a from the same root stock as Jehovah's Witnesses. Their universal issue is the Sabbath and they teach a paradise earth, no hell fire, etc. It is no wonder that they spawn more cults. Jehoah's Witnesses spawned a few cults, such as Layman's Home Missionary movement (P.S.L.Johnson) ... a worse cult than the Watchtower. I met one of their ex-members at a BRCI conference. LHM is more screwed up than Jehoivah's Witnesses.

A Very Sad Shell-Shocking Day

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for so many kind comments. You give good perspectives and advice. The couple I speak of left the religion 20 years ago, in 1984. I was an Elder at the time, and traveled to see them to try and get them back into the organization.
In 1992, when I was leaving the religion, I called to let them know. They took me in right away. We had been close ever since.
I think the difference for me is that I got my family out, as well as built new connections of many former JWs and many never-JWs. From all I can observe, this couple never may many connections outside the religion. I suppose this is why I tend to take some responsibility, because I just wondered if I could have done something different for them. But, after reading what all of you say, I realize that there is little I could have done.
I am hoping that they do get a dose of what cause them to leave in the first place, and get back out. I left the dorr open to them in case they do. Hopefully, if they make it back out, they will build a better sense of community and support system that will fill the void.
Thanks again everyone, Jim W.

Why is it our lot as former members of the Watchtower organization to suffer so much emotional pain? Just when we think we have reached some level of putting it all behind us, something new pops up to bite us hard. A couple that I have been very close to just sent me a very sad e-mail. About 20 years ago they left the JWs and seemingly became atheist-agnostic. When I was an Elder, I traveled to their area to give them a "pep talk" only to be coolly received. Then one day, I called them, as I was in my own spiritual crisis. They took me in and helped me on my journey out of the Watchtower organization.
The last 12 years had proven to be very good as I moved ahead on my journey of discovery, change, and growth. I did not see them sitting in limbo, having their own struggle. Then, one day about a month or two ago, I get a call to go and review a certain web site that promotes the Watchtower Society, but only takes issue with certain doctrines. I thought it strange when they mentioned that the problem with ex-JWs is that they have gone nowhere better, no improved organization to serve God. But, I just kind of discounted this as some growth pains.
Yesterday, I get a long e-mail detailing how they finally got sick of ex-JW site, which only tell half-truths about the Watchtower Society. They went into how I am working and taking a stand against Jehovah. Finally, they talked about how they prayed, and asked Jehovah for help, and before long pride melted away, and they have seen the light. Their e-mail notified me that they were reinstated earlier this month. They concluded by urging me to leave the dark side, and return to Jehovah.
Sadly, they make some fair comment about the behavior of many ex-JWs. Although, they also misrepresented my positions to my own face. They know better than that, because I have never turned away from Jehovah, Jesus, or the Christian faith. I simply do not accept the twisted version of who Jehovah is that is promoted by the Watchtower. Nonetheless, the behavior and words of many ex-JWs and a number of ex-JW web sites had a share in causing them to return to the Watchtower Society.
I wrote an e-mail back to them. I addressed their e-mail in great detail, acknowledging both the flaws of many ex-JWs, but also the hope and comfort I find in Christ. It is too early to tell if anything I said will have any impact. My gut tells me that they will be back in the Watchtower for a while. I left the door open for them to always be friends, and to feel free to get back with me anytime they choose. I only asked that they not misrepresent me, and not minimize my faith any more than they want me to minimize theirs.
Lesson Learned: What we as former members of the Watchtower Society say on the Internet can do much good. We also have an equal power to cause harm. I am reflecting back on many of my posts, which were at times rancorous, and I now feel especially bad for that. Most of my difficult posts were done in parody to make a point crystal clear. (They were posted under my old screen name). Those posts were done as part of my public growth. Some of them, nevertheless, were not really useful in public. Over the years I have received many thankful calls about how I have helped others, and only a handful of calls or e-mail telling me what a bad person I am. Still, this recent situation is so very painful, because I have no idea exactly what I may have said that contributed to their decision to return to the Watchtower organization.
Are we here to help? Any web site or discussion board mission is solely under the control of its owner. Some sites want to help and provide a transition point. BRCI is a place for that. Some sites, like JWD have broader missions, which is fine. And the effort made by Simon and Co. to bump off sour grapes has likely been helpful. Other sites are so mean and rancorous that even experienced ex-JWs often avoid them. Many ex-JWs don't care one way or the other and their reason for being ambivalent vary greatly.
I am lost as to what to do. I suppose there is nothing I can do. So I will wait and pray. I cannot understand why God would let two great people go back and waste their lives in the Watchtower all over again. Perhaps there is something they did not resolve. Who knows? Perhaps they forgot the unfairness they experienced. I have no way of know for sure.
I can only hope that more and more ex-JWs will be more careful about what they say and write. I know that freedom is so very important to us. We of all know so well how a controlling organization can stifle the spirit. Yet, I still feel that somewhere in our world of discovery, freedom, and openness, we also need to show some sense of responsibility. Words do have power and they can cause great good and happiness or equally great harm and hurt.
Out of respect, I have chosen to not do anymore with this couple or to reveal their names. But, I will grieve for them the rest of my life. And, maybe from this experience, I will post even less, and use even fewer words. The old expression to ?weigh your words carefully? really hits home right now. I care more for these people than my pet discoveries and freedom of expression. Although, I cannot point to anything I have said to them that would have tipped the scales, I still have this sinking feeling that it is high time to have a reality check, and make some changes in the way I deal with people, the sites I recommend, and the level of information I share.
Thanks for reading my post. ? Jim W.

Hi drwtsn32,
Wineries? This area is full of them! There are literally dozens.
True. But Rutherford is the most famous and is well known nationally.

Hi Runningman,
Isn't there a vineyard and winery just out of town?
Yes. It is calld Rutherford Vineyards. Ha Ha ... and we used their wine for Memorial. It somehow seemed extra Holy with a name like that. Richland is where I first took the emblems, so in some strange way, a Rutherford wine felt like a good fit. Now, it all seems like a fantasy in wonderland. - Jim W.

When the Governing Body Member....
by Blueblades invisits your hall to give the public talk.
does it turn your hall upside down?
when carey w. barber a member of the governing body gave the public talk in my congregation i was the watchtower study conductor.. he went 15 minutes overtime,so the talk went from 45 min.

Hi Blue,
The best we ever had in our hall was a District Overseer. However, we did have two different Governing Body visits which were special talks.
Nathan Knorr visited the San Francisco Bay area during the oil crisis in the early 1970s. He too was asked to give a special talk. Every Kingdom Hall in the entire Bay Area, from Santa Rosa to the north, to San Jose in the south and areas east of Oakland in the east were tied in by the phone system. Most Kingdom Halls were flooded with everyone you could imagine. In our hall, speakers were set up outside because of overflow.
This was the famous talk where Knorr said we needed to look out for 1973 (not 1975) as a year of great tribulation and turmoil leading up to earth shaking events. Of course with the beginning of the oil crisis, long gas station lines, oil tankers parked in San Francisco Bay, President Nixon taking the US Dollar off of gold, and other events ... we were convinced that this was the beginning of the big day ... Armageddon was right around the corner!
I doubt that today any member of the Governing Body could command such crowds. For example, in 1978, Grant Suiter, Secretary of the Watchtower Corp. visited eastern Washington, near Spokane. Of course he was requested to give a talk. A local college stadium was selected. He drew a crowd of several thousands one Saturday afternoon. It was not a special talk of any kind. No immenence of Armageddon. Rather, it was so boring, I can't recall a word he said, other than I am sure he said, Jehovah, once or twice.
The experience you describe of Carry Barber seems par for the course in more recent years. Much appears to be focused on timing and structure, rather then having something exciting or interesting to say. Its too bad, for JWs used to be kind of fun ... now all that died by the early 1990s.

Hi Bryan,
I lived in Richland twice. for a few years each. It is a nice area. The summers are hot and dry. The winters are often very cold and can stay frozen at about 20 deg for ten to twelve weeks at a time.
The nuclear waste is as Drwtsn32 says. My own exposure record, having worked in waste farm areas and hot cells, is the same as someone who was never exposed. The rumors greatly embellish a few sad incidents.
Some of my best JW friends are still there ... but there is no longer any contact with them. In many ways, to me Richland was like Southern, California. I grew up in Riverside, CA. I was used to the sun and people on the go. So, after I moved to Washington state, on the west side, I became depressed with all the rain and no sunshine. People there lived like little hermits. When I discovered Richland, it was like going home again to a taste of California.
Housing and rental prices are reasonable, however, and if you don't mind a bit of a commute, you can do even better by buying a house in West Richland or Benton City. I bought a brand new home in Benton City for only $41,500. Today, it probably sells for $125,000 or so. But it beats where I am at now, as the same house would be about $250,000.
I think that if you stay there a while, it will grow on you ... and you should come away with some good memories. The current Kingdom Hall is located next to the Mormon Church (there are lots of Mormons there) ... oddly enough, the Mormons donated the land to the JWs so they could have a better place for their Kingdom Hall. Yep, two peas in a pod. - Jim W.

Do You Think That Brooklyn Is Concerned About Apostafests?
by Englishman inlooking through some of the society's earlier wt's, it does seems as though they tend to see apostates as lonely and isolated people.
i can only find one reference to organised apostates in the wt.. so i wonder how they feel about the recent plethora of fests that are taking place?.
it's certainly having a nullifying effect on the enforced isolation that they like to see resulting from disfellowshipping.

Hi E-Man,
Looking through some of the Society's earlier WT's, it does seems as though they tend to see apostates as lonely and isolated people. I can only find one reference to organised apostates in the WT.
The Society loves to paint ex-JWs as lonely and isolated in order to frighten and deceive the rank and file members. They spin it this way to make the members believe that there is no life outside the Big-O.
So I wonder how they feel about the recent plethora of fests that are taking place? ... It's certainly having a nullifying effect on the enforced isolation that they like to see resulting from disfellowshipping.
The Society likely does not care too much, except that they do not want their members finding out about how well ex-JWs are doing. Once JWs learn the truth about life outside the Big-O, the effects of Watchtower spin are nullified, as you point out.
BUT, also, the Society does believe that ex-JWs are highly organized, and they believe that our entire existence is dedicated to their demise. So, they do have concern about our activities. I have no doubt they send in loyal JWs they can trust to monitor and report back.
They must be pretty peed off with it. Don't you realise that having turned your back on Jehovah you should be eating carob pods?
I am sure they would love to see us suffer. To hedge their bets, they also use the spin that we are rejoicing now, only to howl and gnash our teeth when Armageddon arrives. Instead, their worst nightmares are coming true, because it is really the Watchtower leaders who will howl, weep, and gnash their teeth, as they witness their own lies coming to light, costing them their followers and cozy life at Bethel.

Swearing on the platform
by sleepy indid you every hear anyone say something really dodgy from the platform when giving a talk?

When I was a JW, I heard many stories, but only witnessed one that I can recall.
We had a long time elder, I would say 40 years a JW. He was giving a public talk that dealt with conduct, etc. He go off on talking about swearing. He took an excursion on the many uses of the word "hell." It was very funny, and had the audience in stitches. He could get by with this kind of talk back in the 1970s. However, the anal-retentive policies of today would never permit such humor. - Jim W.
