American Idol final: Diana or Fantasia
by Mulan ini thought both girls sang amazingly last night.
both had one song that wasn't so great, so the contest was a draw for me.
since simon so obviously favors fantasia i voted 3 times for diana.

I agree with you completely Mulan. I love Diana, but Fantasia should win it. Besides, Diana is 16. She has a number of years to hone her talent and will probably have a long career. Fantasia's rendition of "Summertime" killed both times she performed it. Unsurpassed.

this is one of the definitions for dialect that i found at dictionary.com.
i think ebonics fits the profile of this definition.

I remember taking a linguistics course as an undergrad. The instructor was the English Department Chair for the university. One day he wrote the word "probably" on the board and then went on to ask the class for the different pronounciations of the word such as "problee", "prally", etc. One of my classmates stated that those were "uneducated, incorrect pronouciations. The professor corrected my classmate and stated that linguistically, as long as the meaning of the word is transmitted, pronounciation is a non-issue. I loved learning that. I think of it often when I hear something pronounced dialectically.

I sent a letter to the WT Branch Office in the Netherlands about the UN
by avengers ini wrote a letter to the branch office here in answer to their un proclamation.. the one i wrote in dutch i have already sent, but for your pleasure and leisure and fun.
i have translated it from dutch into english so that you "normal" folks can read it.

Bravo avengers! Makes me want to write a letter of my own telling them that they aren't deceiving anyone but themselves. I am weighing the options. Perhaps being disfellowshipped for standing up to their bully-dom isn't such a bad thing...

JW's and Funerals..... your thoughts please, including current JW's
by bull01lay ina morbid topic i know, but one that has played on my mind since i was df'd.. my mum is still a very devout witness.
if anything happened to her, what would the witness position be on my attending the funeral ?.
i know she would (quite rightly)expect a service at the kingdom hall.

If they didn't allow you it would be total BS. When I was 15, my eldest brother was stabbed 32 times. Because of the blood issue, he came very close to death. The elders "suspended" the rules at the hospital and acknowledged my presence (how magnanimous!). If I were you, I wouldn't let anyone stand in the way of attending the funeral, but I have a rep as a total beeeyotch (can I say that here?). Stand tall! No one has the right to get in the way of your closure.

one of the things i felt i missed out on while i was a witness, other than wild sex when young is higher education.
i quit hs to pioneer and now have just recently finished a college degree and am still working on my masters, but i find myself resenting that i have had to do this all at night and while in my forties.

Yes, resentment is an understatement - even though I went against the grain and went to college anyway. This was about 10 years ago. I was treated like a complete pariah for doing so. I completed my MBA last year. While I was in grad school I attended a Sunday meeting to hear my brother give the public talk (a familial courtesy). During the WT study I couldn't help but notice that the reader was fairly illiterate. One of the paragraphs he read made reference to Sikhism and Taoism which he pronounced SILK-ism and Tay-O-ism. It became even funnier when people answered the questions and repeated his mispronounciations. But the capper was when the WT conductor, a person on parole for homicide (however, I do have to say, he's a teddy bear now), made reference to the fact that he noticed that the more educated people became the more arrogant they were. Hmmm, new math equation X education = Y arrogance. Whatever. After the meeting I approached him and explained that I was finishing my Masters degree and was wondering what kind of person that made me. He became VERY quiet and red faced. I guess the organization can add educated individuals to the long list of people against whom it discriminates.

one major one was no video games before the meeting.

My mother was a pioneer and had the keys to the KH. She used that as an excuse to be at the meeting 45 minutes to an hour early. Really, she just didn't want to deal with my father, so she would leave as early as possible. It completely sucked being there before anyone else. She would start hounding me about getting ready almost immediately after I got home from school. I loved it when I turned 16 and got a job at the local McDonald's. I would deliberately get shifts scheduled on meeting nights. I do have a couple of good memories though. My mother would stop off at the nearby liquor store before the meetings and load up on hard candy. I swear we would eat 10 rolls of life savers (mmmm cinnamon) per meeting. Afterwards, we would try to get home before 20/20 or Cheers came on and I would make home made tortilla chips and salsa. And NO, I don't weigh 400 pounds, but I should ;-)
