Ancient Israel made banners to carry in front of them. A banner is a flag. Psalms 20:5 says "We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up banners" and Psalms 60:4 says "thou hast given a banner to those that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the Truth." Obviously God and the Israelites knew they were not "idolizing" a flag. Watchtower uses "idolizing" as a mind congtrol word to inflict unnecessary guilt for the members to feel they are always doing wrong. I remember hearing talks about not letting your children hang posters in thier room of favored rock stars or Tv personalities. This was carried so far that some even believed Mickey Mouse was an Idol to be avoided. Put in perspective, I personally feel that saluting the flag, standing up for it, and singing patriotic songs are acts displaying respect for the representation of our homeland. Like our own home, we love it and want to feel safe and protected in it and would protect our home against thieves and murderers to our family. It is the same with the country we live in. It is the land our children are growing up in, and th land that we worship our God in. There are so many things about our land, like our home, that we take pride in. It is home sweet home when we come back from a visit to another country. I remember a couple of weeks ago coming back from the Bahama's that I felt that even though I enjoyed the vacation, I felt good to be "home". I don't "worship" my country, that I call home, and I don't "worship" the representation of the emblem or banner. It is the same with flags of decorative pictures some hang in front of thier house. My husband had at one time wanted to put a banner with a picture of a labradore retriever on it. We have two labs and this is a representative a the breed we have and love. But certainly we do not "worship" the dog. I think, like the Psalms brings out about the Israelites carrying thier banner, human beings tend to want to "symbolize" their things that are dear to them. I am really looking at this in a new perspective after being a JW for 30 years. It is a good feeling to use my conscience in a personal way now. My conscience doesn't move me to avoid the flag. Yet, their was an incident that occured between us and our neighbor. Their 2 Jack Russell Terriers came in our yard and literally ripped apart and killed our beloved cat we had for 22 years. There was blood all over the back yard where we found him. It was horrible and for weeks and months following, I had fantasies of harming these two dogs for what they had done to our beloved cat. I imagined all kinds of ways to harm them. Poison, drowning, catching and dumping them far away. But after thinking such thought and wanting to do them, I would realize that my conscience would never ever allow me to take an action like that and would never want to answer to God for that action against one of his creatures.(even though I hate the damned dogs). It just feels so good to have that freedom now to excersize my own conscience without the stupid WT deciding what is good and bad. I know in my deep down gut what seems not ok with God. I don't think he cares about a flag, but how our actions towards others of his creation are what counts. Well, I've rambled too much. I may go out and buy a flag, if I can get the JW scare messages out of my brain:)

What Is Wrong With This Picture ?

Hi Tally, the pictures are chilling and always when I would view these pictures I would ask myself how could anyone smile at the destruction portrayed here. I would always justify it in my mind by remembering the scriptures about the meek and blameless ones would be left over in the earth. This is what I would always tell my children when they were little if they asked me if thier friends who were not JW's be "destroyed". I look back on this and it is all so sick. I know there were a lot of parents that frightened thier children by constantly showing those pictures to them and telling them they "would be put in prison during persecution" and they may "have to eat rats" because there would be no food to eat,and "they would be beaten some to death for being JW's. I never thought it was right to scare children that way. But the Watchtower encourages parents to do this to thier children. Yes, I believe that with everything happening now with the WTC Tragedy, I can absolutely picture the Society giving somehow the implied perminssion to "kill" apostates. Already, I have gotten threatening mail telling me I deserve to die the way the ancient Israelites did in Moses day, like Korah, for not taking direction from "jehovah's visible representatives here on earth". These letters were written by individuals whom I had long considered close friends, and family. They do not know jesus law of love, and therefore I believe that it is THEY, who have no natural affection, and would deliver anyone up to death believing they are doing it for thier god. Truly this kind of thinking is identical to that of the terrorist who actually believed they were validated by thier religous belief. Does anyone else feel this way?

A JW friend told my husband and I that the info about Brooklyn locking it's doors is totally untrue and that she heard from "an unsolicited source, that the brothers in Brooklyn welcomed people in and even offered machinery and equipment to aid in the rescue efforts". I know she is being given typical WT spin, most likely the equipment was sent to other JW's. The person who told her is in "housekeeping" at Bethel. Probably some poor "sister" cleaning toilets was give the info by the ones "taking the lead" up there.

by Marvin Shilmer inbut whoever has this worlds means for supporting life and beholds his brother having need and yet shuts the door of his tender compassions upon him, in what way does the love of god remain in him?

Marvin, thank you for the post. I too feel ashamed of the apathy that has been displayed. That I was a devout practicer of this religion. Love for fellow man and conscience moves one to look searchingly into the doctrine of the Society and realize they "honor with thier lips, but thier heart is far removed...." I'm happy to have rejoined the human race.
Nicodemus, your words spoken were very thought provoking to anyone who may question whether or not Brooklyn Headquarters and the GB could possibly be our Creator's visible representatives here on earth. It seems to me that it is they who have "Apostatsized" from Christ's original teachings. Thank you for reminding us of what the scripture in Luke teaches.

With all there real estate and access to individuals that could voluteer, I wonder if Bethel feels moved to open it's to the many caring people that are there working ferverishly to rescue the victims in this tragedy. Would Bethel donate sandwiches for even offer water to the thristy volunteers? My son's classes have been cancelled at NYIT today and his dorm is in the heart of Bethel. He mentions the many many caring efforts of New Yorkers as they come together to help one another. People making sandwhiches donating clothing etc. Will the JW's continue thier mindless schedule of selfish apathy and disinterest in the human race as they head out the door to their "assignments" and "field service". I am glad to have rejoined the human race with all of it's uncertainties. I am glad to not be part of the mindset instilled that makes them living waiting not to die. It is in sadness I write this post. I woke up this morning and felt a heavy feeling in my stomach realizing what has been unfolding there and all the pain felt among the rescuers and victims and thier families. I always loved to go to NYC and look at the Twin Buildings WTC and sit and watch the New York Skyline from a favored NJ restaraunt during the setting sun. I loved waking up in the morning and if I were in the area see the sun shining on these magnificent peices of architecture. I will miss them in my lifetime. I am angry at the sensless distruction and the dancing in the streets over in Palistine. It seems to me the same mindset is among JW's. They are dancing in their hearts in their selfish expectations. I have read some of the comments on Bridgette's thread and it is so sad that I at one time could have been this way.

My son who is still there in Manhattan at his college Dorm said it is so incredible how everyone is so kind and helpful to oneanother. People were standing by the Brooklyn Bridge giving water to tired passersby, helping each other, holding each other. All working together. People are going on line to donate blood. When I think of this act I think of the scripture, great love hath no man than to give his life for another. Those rescue workers who gave thier lives before the building came down. Did one Jehovah's Witness give so much as a sympathetic look. They were too busy rushing out to the Kingdom Hall tonight to save their pathetic mindless asses. My husband and I sat glued to the TV today with our hearts crying for the losses and watching the sheer humanity of it all. We realized we had not eaten all day, so we went to get a take out pizza to bring back home. On the way we passed the Kingdom Hall we used to attend. IT WAS PACKED at 7:32. Unheard of for this congregation in this area. They are problably all in their gloating and feeling so superior to all on the outside who are derserving of death. Their thoughts are just as murderous as those who follow Ben Laden. Peace to all tonight. May we all feel the humanitarian love for all those touched by this Tragedy.
