They gave themselves over 120 years for the end to come, from around 1870 to the present, if someone says today the end will come between 2005 and 2125 AD he may get it right by sheer chance and it means nothing.
The trick is to pinpoint the correct year but this is not possible because it's unknowable.

"And war broke out in heaven" - Why and how?
by truthseeker ini don't know if anyone has brought up the subject of "the war in heaven" before, but i have a few questions.
maybe leolaia could help out with this one.
revelation 12 talks about a war in heaven - now this is not just any war.

But the 1914 date turns out to be false, and originally they were expecting armagedon at that time. The first world war did seem to be the result of binding satan at the earth but then it appears as coincedence.

Mark I wonder what you define as junk food, McDonalds do sell a lot of this but their grilled meat burgers happen to be quite nutritious and it's the only thing I buy on my occasional visits there. Their frying oils are used so many times they become rancid.

What words and phrases do Brits and others see as 'American'?
by sonnyboy inas an american, i see words such as cheerio, blimey, bloody (when referring to something negative), loo, bugger, fag (cigarette), etc.
as chiefly british (i suppose they are).. what words and/or phrases do you consider to be chiefly american?
i'm honestly unaware of which words i use that may not be used in other english-speaking countries.

I think when we read in Revelation heaven and earth we should not perceive them as literal but as symbolic, signifying mental states.
To be thrown down to the earth means to lose rights, power, status, and dignity and enter into a humiliated, downtrodden state of mind. The war mentioned there is obviously a spiritual war, mind to mind, and in this sense even humans can participate in it.
This may be refering to the war between the two sides since the days of Jesus on earth covering the entire history of the church. -

Mothers Doubts: Latest Update
by diamondblue1974 infurther to my previous thread i thought i would share an update with you on the situation with my mother... .
essentially my mother has been a jw for 30 years and we had a long conversation which involved me running through my reasons for no longer going to the meetings; she seemed quite receptive and agreed for me to send the documents and articles relating to the un.
well that very evening she went to see her elders without actually seeing the documents and asked about the un saga....apparently the elder told her that 'this was all sorted out ages ago and yes this has come from the apostates' 'the society has never been a member of the un and that this just a hoax designed to stumble people....' hmmn.

I also think at her age it will impossible to move into a new environment and successfully adapt to it so she might as well stay where is used to, in her familiar medium of 30 years.

You have to admit some of the JW illustrations were kinda cool...
by marked ini almost used the word "art" in place of "illustrations" in the subject line.
anyway, i always thought that wt illustrators were of a fairly high calibre.
after the hideous 70s-ish gray-orange-green my book of bible stories era (and, yes, i know some of that had to do with printing tech at the time), some of the illustrations were (are) of quite high quality.. .

I found their art to be dull, uninspired, and unimaginative, as one would expect to be the case in a dictatorial org, creative artistic expression and totalitarianism simply don't mix.
And what happened with the subliminal images issue? -

Did it ever bother you that Watchtower never did charitible works?
by AK - Jeff ini mean, for forty years believing the witness lie it always made me wonder.. judas was the keeper of the money box - and there are statements that indicated that the apostles thought that wasting money that could be used to aid the poor was sinful - so indications are that the earliest christians were doing charitible works.
of course there are many scriptural passages that encourage that activity among believers.
today all the organization ever does is pay lip service to charity.

This was very strange to me, that the jws who were hoping to gain eternal life were not willing to be generous to justify such a lofty expectation, and that made them appear as fakes, at a time when they were accusing everyone else as being babylonian fakes. They wouldn't help even those that were very loyal to the org despite their fabulous wealth.
Something obviously didn't add up.
