Hi Leolaia,
You have done an excellent job with the census. Keep up the good work.
Earnest, your comments are well taken. However, Heath could have been mistaken, or not being totally honest.
it was made by a women who in later years wore crotchless panties and bras which had holes in the nipple areas.
he not only knew the woman in question (she's now deceased), he has met her numerous times.
up until recently this secret of her year's long sexual affair with rutherford was kept by the family.

Hi Leolaia,
Thank you for posting the updated information on the 1930 census. Hopefully someone will have the time to look into the property tax records for Monrovia for the years 1930-1940 as this will help clarify where Mary Rutherford resided during that period.

Hi Earnest,
Your quotations from the Moyle trial are very interesting. Ten years ago I read the transcripts myself, all 1992 pages.
The questioning of William Heath by Olin Moyle's attorney Walter Bruchausen is found on page 1301.
Bruchausen: Now, did Mr. Rutherford's wife live out in the California residence?
Heath: Yes.
Bruchausen: And did live there all the years you went out there?
Heath: Yes.
Bruchausen: She never came on to reside in Bethel?
Heath: No.
It is unfortunate that Mr Bruchausen didn't phrase his question: "Now did Mr. Rutherford's wife live out in California at Beth Sarim?" Since Bruchausen used the term California residence, Heath may have used "Theocratic War Strategy" so he could say yes because Mrs. Rutherford lived at a California residence, most likely in Monrovia. The 1930 census gives her address as 160 N Primrose Ave., Monrovia. The December 18, 1962 death notice gives her address as 159 Stedman Place, Monrovia. The December 19, 1962 obituary notice said that she was a Monrovia resident for 22 years. This may have been an error, or a reference to her residence at 159 Stedman Place. The February 15, 1963 obituary said that Mary had "made her home in Monrovia, Calif., for the past 40 years."
I seriously doubt that Mary Rutherford lived at Beth Sarim during the 1930s. But one could check the census records for 1940 to see if Mary was still living at 160 N Primrose, 159 Stedman Place, or some other residence. However, since she owned her home she would have paid property taxes each year. A simple check of the tax records would indicate at which residence she was living and also if she was paying taxes on rental property that she owned.
By the way there is a wealth of information in the Moyle transcripts some of which can be quite humorous. I remember one JW witness who when asked the date of his marriage, couldn't answer. He thought, but just couldn't come up with an answer. It was rather comical since the man had been married only a few years and was in his 30s. Unfortuately I don't have the time to re-read the transcripts to find the confrontation. But if some of you have the time, please look it up.

Hi Frank,
My friend CW knew Mary Rutherford because they attended the same congregation. Whether Mary went out in the field service every Saturday and sold Watch Towers or was inactive CW didn't say and I didn't ask. Did Mary attend all the meetings on a regular basis or did she just attend Memorial? I can't answer. CW and her family were new to the Monrovia area in the 1950s and Mrs. Rutherford had lived there since the 1920s. Therefore, Mary must have maintained some association with the congregation for CW to have met her. CW also said that Mary would give her and her family presents around the Christmas Holidays.
Regarding JFR's personal life, all CW related was that when the Judge would come out to California he would spend his time at Beth Sarim with his mistress and would never visit his wife. Since JFR's sex life is not the subject of my bookI haven't pursued this part of his career.
But remember it was August 1987 when CW and I had that conversation. Had I known at the time that I would be writing a book about JFR I would have asked her specific questions and kept a tape recorder handy.

Hi Lady Lee,
The Mary Rutherford obituary that appeared in the February 1963 Boonville Advertiser is not a phoney, however, it was supplied to the paper's editor by a JW which explains some of the embellishements. It is interesting that the Watch Tower book Jehovah's Witnesses--Proclaimers of God's Kingdom claims to quote from an obituary that appeared in a Monrovia newspaper. The quote appears at the bottom of page 89 as a footnote: "Sister Rutherford died December 17, 1962, at the age of 93. Notice of her death, appearing in the Monrovia, California Daily News--Post, stated: 'Until poor health confined her to her home, she took an active part in the ministerial work of Jehovah's Witnesses.'"
Please note that the Watch Tower attributes the above quote to the Monrovia Daily News--Post. But this is not correct as only two notices appeared in the Daily News, December 18, 1962 and December 19, 1962. The December 18 notice said: "RUTHERFORD--MARY M., of 159 Stedman Place, passed away Monday evening at a local sanitarium. She is survived by a son, Malcolm C., of Monrovia. Services will be announced by Temple & LaGorge Mortuary."
The December 19 notice states: "RUTHERFORD, MARY M.--Monrovia resident for twenty-two years. Mother of Malcolm B. Rutherford, of Monrovia. Services Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Temple & La Gorge Chapel." This is all that the Daily News says. I have quoted the notices in their entirety and as one can see, there is no mention of Mary's religious affiliation. By the way the Watch Tower was informed of this misquote.
Shortly before his death I wrote to GB member Lloyd Barry and informed him of this error and suggested that in future editions of the Proclaimers book that the Boonville Advertiser be given proper credit for the quote. Copies of all three notices that appeared in the Daily News--Post and the Boonville Advertiser were enclosed for his examination. But it is doubtful that the publishers of a book full of errors and misquotes will make even one minor correction.
Regarding Mary's source of income, her family was quite well off so it is possible that she had investments separate from JFR's. Therefore, she may not have been dependent on Watch Tower handouts.
I don't know if Mary was very active in "the ministerial work of Jehovah's Witnesses." Did she really believe the goofy doctrines that her husband had formulated? I can't say. She was an active member of the Boonville Presbyterian Church when JFR married her in December 1891. Joe was Baptist but a Presbyterian minister performed the marriage ceremony. Over a decade would pass before Mary and Joe bought into the Watch Tower.
My friend CW didn't say if Mary went door to door when she knew her in the 1950s. No doubt because of her advanced age she would have been inactive at this time. But CW did say that Mary was associated with the local congregation and did talk about her late husband's extracuricular activity .

Hi Lady Lee,
Mary Rutherford's obituary, which appeared on page one of the Boonville (Missouri) Advertiser of February 15, 1963, may answer your questions regarding her religious affiliation.
"Mrs. Rutherford, 93 Dies in California
Word has been received here of the recent death of Mrs. Mary Rutherford, 93, former resident of Boonville, who had made her home in Monrovia, Calif., for the past 40 years.
Until poor health confined her to her home, she took an active part in the ministerial work of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her husband, whose death occurred a number of years ago, served as president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society from 1917 until 1942. Mrs. Rutherford accompanied him frequently to many different foreign countries.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm C. Rutherford, of Arcadia, Calif.
Paul L. Sergeants, minister of the Arcadia, Calif., Jehovah's Witnesses, officiated at the funeral service. Burial was in Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia."
If the Boonville Advertiser is correct, Mary Rutherford lived in Monrovia, California beginning in 1923. This is where she lived when my friend CW met her in the early 1950s. Though Mary accompanied JFR on several European tours before World War I, she was not included in the Judge's post war entourage. As Mary told CW, when Joe would come out to California he would spend his time at Beth Sarim with his mistress and would never visit his wife, who lived just 100 miles away from the San Diego mansion.
It is also interesting that Mary lived to a ripe old age of 93 and was an active Witness until poor health in later years confined her to her home.
The Rutherford partisans often refer to Mary as an invalid, making it sound like she was confined to a hospital bed and needed 24 hour care. Thus, according to their reasoning, the Judge, a man in the prime of life, was justified in seeking other companionship. But it was only in Mary's later years that she became infirm. What is surprising is that she remained a loyal Jehovah's Witness despite the shabby treatment she received by their leader, her husband.

Interesting post, Earnest. But while the others who posted on this thread have identified the source of their information, you have kept silent. Were you an eyewitness to some of the events you describe or are you repeating disinformation supplied by the WTS?
Great post Fark. Keep up the good work.
think about that for a moment....... if jesus was a jw(as jws claim), how would he have handled various situations??
for example, if peter denied him 3 times, what would've been different?
or if the disciples fell asleep the night before he was to die, how would a jesus christ jehovah's witness have handled it?.......you get the idea.
No!
