  Do you know of gross mistranslations in the JW Bible (NWT)

  for all you that have studied the subject what are some big distortions of the original scriptures hebrew and greek, that are to be found in the jw bible (nwt)?

  i found that at 1 thessalonians 4:15-17 it says that the living christians in the final days will be snatched up as soon as the dead ones get resurrected.

  that blows up the jw belief that the said resurrection occured in 1918 because they weren't taken up at the same time.

  Hi Super Becka,

  You might find "So Many Versions?" by Sakae Kubo & Walter Specht to be helpful in discussing the errors of the NWT. I don't know if it is still in print, but the book was published by Zondervan.

  One interesting quote from page 103 of the book regarding the NWT:

  "The jargon which they use is often scarcely English at all, and it reminds one of nothing so much as a schoolboy's first painful beginnings in translating Latin into English. The translation is marked by a wooden literalism which will only exasperate any intelligent reader--if such it finds--and instead of showing the reverence for the Bible which the translators profess, it is an insult to the Word of God."

  who attends a church now?

  i'm interested in knowing how many, after leaving, started to attend a church.

  if so, what one and how did you decide?

  I left the JWs in 1984 and for a couple of years didn't attend any religious services. However, in 1987 a co-worker inivited me to attend Unitarian services, which I did for a few months. Later that year I attended Episcopal services and found that they satified my spiritual needs. I took instruction in the Church and was confirmed in 1991. Despite the controversies that have plagued the Episcopal Church in recent years I have no plans to leave.

  Though I was raised in the Witness religion, I never had a problem visiting other religious houses of worship.

  the speaker was asking those in attendance to look around and see who was missing and to call them and encourage them to come back to the meetings.

  In my locality it seems like all the KHs have both Spanish and English speaking congregations. Also the last time I looked at the District Convention schedule for Northern California there seemed to be almost as many Spanish Conventions as English.

  The information you requested is found on page 1567 of the Olin Moyle transcripts. Moyle's attorney asked Isaac F. Hoskins, a former Watch Tower director: "Were you present at any meeting when there was a discussion about a thousand dollar loan to Mr. Rutherford?"

  Hoskins: "In the summer of 1915 Mr. Rutherford had withdrawn from the active work and wrote a letter to Pastor Russell asking if the Society would loan him a thousand dollars, that he was about to set up a law office in Los Angeles. Pastor Russell recommended to the Board that it be loaned him, and so the motion was passed in his favor."

  Even the Witnesses admit that "Jehovah" is not the correct pronunciation of the Divine Name. Most scholars favor Yahweh as the preferable, if not the correct pronunciation. However, the prayer Jesus taught his followers to pray is the "Our Father Prayer" (Lord's Prayer).
