I was a Jehovah's Witness in a different religion

i recently had a very long conversation with my mother, about what jehovah's witnesses teach and believe now.

while i could gleam ideas and thoughts, that kind of worked with the religion i once called home.

more often then not, i had to come to a extreme conclusion.

I agree that the JW organization of the 1950s and 60s was very different from the present structure. In those days many KHs were rented rooms above the local Pool Hall. Even smoking was tolerated. We also had a lot of extracuricular events that are now prohibited. Then came the 1970s, which started by ushing in some needed reforms. I like to refer to those days as Watchtower Vatican II. Had the liberals on the GB won the power struggle in the lat 70s, JWism would be a much different religion today. Unfortunately the GB hardliners purged Ray Franz, Ed Dunlap, and other liberals from Bethel and reform was replaced with repression.

Since I resigned as an elder in 1984 and faded, there have been a lot of changes to JW religious structure. Thank God I'm out and don't have to deal with this. But as the JW membership ages and the young leave, the vast majority in the KHs will be the elderly. I feel sorry for these older ones as senior dementia takes its toll on these long time faithful JWs. Will they be DFd because they can't retain the new FDS change and still teach the old interpretation?

I read 1984 when I was in high school during the 1960s. This was almost 20 years before I learned TTATT. Unfortunately I didn't make the connection at the time. Ironically in 1984 I read COC and did make the connection. That same year I resigned as an elder and faded.

In 1985 I read the Botting's book, The Orwellian World Of Jehovah's Witnesses. This book really drove the point home.

Welcome to the forum.

You've been given a lot of helpful advice from ones who have been in your situation before. However, there is another possibility. You didn't mention whether your husband is a JW or not. If he's not a JW, because the JWs view the man as the head of the household whether JW or not, he can insist that you and your daughter celebrate birthdays and holidays. Since you are to respect his headship the elders can't do anything if you have a Christmas Tree or your daughter has a birthday party.

NEW NWT'S Distributed at 2013 Conventions?

chatter on the street is that there exists a very high possiblility of the new newworld translation being distributed.

it comes from a reliable sources, but who knows.

has anyone heard anything about this?.

According to Ray Franz the NWT translating committee was made up of Freddy Franz, Nathan Knorr, Albert Schoeder, and George Gangas (Crisis of Conscience, page 50). Since nobody on the NWT translating committee is alive today explains why there haven't been any 21st Century revisions to the JW Bible. The English language is a living language so words and meanings change. But a look at the NWT reveals that it was written in a form of English more common to the late 19th and early 20th Century. Therefore, a revised NWT is definitely needed, but probably won't happen.

Unless the GB has employed a medium to channel the NWT committee members from the great beyond, it's doubtful that a revised NWT is in the works.

Did You Give Much $$$ To The Kingdom Hall And/Or Watchtower Society?

i typically gave $$$ to the local kh and seldom gave donations to the society.. i always am amazed how some church going people have very little materially, yet make sure the church and the pastors are well taken care of..

I rarely donated at the KH and never at assemblies. Figured that driving in FS and to assemblies was enough, after all gasoline isn't cheep. I do donate to my church as it provides food distribution to the poor, and fund's a partime medical clinic for the needy.

The Watchtower always took from the brothers and sisters but never gave anything in return except a guilt trip.

hi everyone, ok i guess this is controversial, but im doing it as therapy for me - so im not bitter about the way i was raised.

plus i want to see if i can be the op of an "epic thread"!!.

I was also born in, but had the advantage of having a non-JW father, so I was able to get some college education. Unfortunately I had a manipulative "gung ho JW" mother who talked me into quiting college for pioneering. Pioneering did keep me out of the Vietnam war, so I guess that was something positive about being a JW. Other than that, I can't say I have any happy memories of JW life.

Born in. Grandmother converted to the Bible Students in 1919. Guess that made me 3rd generation dubby. Broke free in 1984 nine years after the Great Tribulation.

Requalifying as an Elder

i'd like to throw something out to the exelders.. over the years since i stepped down as an elder, my dislike for the society and its ways has clearly grown.. but my love for the bible and my family and friends in the congregation has not got less.. i feel sorry that they are not mature enough to grasp the concept that you dont need the society to make god happy.. so i have been thinking ( and its just a crazy thought at the moment ) to requalify as an elder and to begin to really teach the truth.. to really challenge their thinking and take my talks to the limit without getting busted as a heretic.. whats youre thought?.

I learned TTAT while still serving as an elder, and served an additional year after that before resigning. During that time I served on several JCs. Here's where I did some damage according to the Watchtower. I got the accused off with reduced sentences (mild private reproof) instead of Puplic Reproof or DF. On another JC where the person was accused of apostasy, I grilled the accusers until they admitted that they might have misunderstood what the person said. The case was dropped and the person got off for the time being.

Teaching TTAT from the platform is very difficult. Here the best I was able to do was point out in a sly way, the flaws of the NWT in comparison to modern English translations like the TEV and the NAB.

As far as my JC work, the persons who got off with mild private reproof, are probably still in. Regarding the person accused of apostasy, a year after I left the BOE formed another JC and DFd her.

In my experience it is impossible to reform the JW organization from within. It's more likely that reform will come from without, due to law suits and government actions that threaten the Watchtower's financial assets.

i had been feeling a little sick so i took some nyquil which gave me the craziest dream last night where i saw a jdub plan out and kill each one of the gb!

each made to look like an accident or like an illness.

Like the U.S. Presidency, the GB must have some order for succession. Possibly BOs, DOs, and even COs might be on the list of emergency GB replacements.
