Welcome. You asked 'what am I in for'? Well, the truth about the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society in Crooklyn, a lot of spirited discussion about a great many topics, and a lot of great people who have a great many different views but for the most part treat each other and each other's opinions with respect.

My Crazy Mother learns a lesson
by RichieRich inyesterday (monday) i was off school and work, and i told my mother i would go out in service.
so monday morning i got up, got dressed, drove to the hall, and there was no one there.
i fell asleep in my car while i waited, woke up to wave at a brother, then fell back asleep, and then woke up, looked around and left.

Ahhh...gotta love that Guardian....you can bet the WT won't be using any quotes from THAT newspaper any time soon....
It stated in the article that the WTS was suing for $100,000 Canadian...hmmm...<doing math in head>....
isn't that like, ten bucks U.S.? We could have pitched in and paid the fine......

What is the meaning of Apostate?
by NiecyMe inthe dictionary defines apostate as "one who practices apostasy, to revolt".
doesn't this apply to just about anyone?
jw's wanted us to think that the word has more meaning into it then it really does.

"Independent Thinker" is a good one, since the Watchtower hates it and the rest of the world sees it as a good thing.
Lol..right on. How about "Critically Independent Thinker".
I wonder how the WT began to apply 'apostate' to former members, and when. Personally, the label doesn't bother me. Like you, I grew up in the 'truth' thinking that apostates were nothing but lying, bitter former members who had an axe to grind. I never once considered that they were more truthful than the organization I was serving. I wasn't scared of them, but I mocked them and felt sorry for them that they had let Satan persuade them to leave the only God approved organization on earth.
I remember when you'd be talking to your friends and someone would say "Did you hear about so and so? He's an apostate now." And a hush would fall across the group. They could fornicate, steal, lie, cheat - do just about anything and it would not have been as bad as being called the 'a' word. That's so funny now.
I was told by a close friend who is still associated with the 'truth' and some of my former friends and family that word has 'leaked out' that I'm an apostate. I'm crushed, let me tell ya.......

A Guide Book To a Better Life?

Welcome to the boards!
I agree. I think most religious organizations are a mix of a little truth and a lot of falsehood, or at least misplaced faith. I think that the Bible is what it is to each person. You don't have to be a JW to believe that the Bible is to be taken literally. You can have a strong belief in God, yet question that every portion of the Bible is to be taken literally.
What I've seen from being on this forum is that many former JW's are SO tired of hearing about God, the Bible, the end of the world, etc, that they become atheist or agnostic. It's just easier. Others are so happy that they feel that they have found the 'real' message of the Bible and that it is not a heavy-handed "you will be destroyed" mentality, that they renew their faith in God and Jesus and reach new heights of true spirituality.
I personally am not convinced that you have to be part of an organization to be 'saved'. I think that you must read the Bible, formulate your own opinion, and be ready to defend that opinion and your life course before God. I completely agree with your statement that you and you alone will have to answer for your spirituality and the choices you make.
One other thing. I think getting caught up in whether we all go to heaven, or whether there is life after death, or any number of other doctrinal issues is wasted time. There are many things in the Bible that we probably truly cannot understand completely. I think if you develop the best relationship you can with God, accept the basic tenets of the Bible (the ransom sacrifice), and do the best you can, then that is all God can expect out of imperfect humans.

How do you feel about people on government assistence?
by free2beme infor a long time, before working with people in this situation, i would have answered this question with .... "i feel for them and i know how degrading it must be, to come to this point in their life to have to depend on the government to sustain them" .
... once i got up close and personal with these people, i have learned that my answer only applies to a small group of those on government assistance.
well from my experience, those on government assistance are more often about taking advantage of the system, then they are about actually being in need of help.

I think there's some that truly need it, many who don't. What I see are many people who DO need it don't qualify - many times because they don't lie on their applications. Here in the US we have areas where generations of family have grown up on welfare (for lack of a better word) and it's the normal way to make a living to them.
The welfare system has created a monster where people feel entitled to handouts and aren't educated enough to understand that the money they are given comes out of the checks of people who work for a living. Many times the people working for a living don't make that much themselves, but their federal taxes pay for those who won't work. Realize, I'm not by any means saying that anyone on public assistance is a crook, but the ones that are make them all look bad.
When I went through college, I received government grants and other government assistance for myself and my family. In the 15 years since, I have repaid that money several hundred times over with my federal taxes. To me, public assistance is for people who are down for a short period of time but who want to work and will work given the chance, and people who are physically unable to work. It SHOULD NOT be a lifetime way of making a living and supporting 10 illegitimate children fathered by 10 different men.

I am a milieage victim!
by free2beme ini would love to have a vehicle that got 30 miles or more to the gallon.
unfortunetly i have to toe things, like a boat, and that requires a truck.
so i purchased a dodge truck, with a deisel engine, and i get a thrill out of 14-16 mpg.

The most disappointing mileage I ever got was in a 2001 Dodge Durango. 12 in the city, 14 on the Hwy - on a good day.
The best use of gas I ever had was my 1969 Dodge Charger - 383 big block, Hurst pistol grip shifter - nice!
The reason we still use gas is because the oil companies are powerful enough to quash any and all efforts to bring alternative fuels to the market. As long as they see a future in making $$, we'll use gas.....

Ditto....I've been using eBay for several years and had no problems. Check their feedback, make sure it's positive and (preferably plentiful). Communicate well with the sellers/buyers, pay promptly, ship quickly, and all should be well....
