:Interesting take, Pole. Do you also subscribe to the notion of a disk earth?
Floating effortlessly on a cushion of air.
:I believe that the milesic pilosophers moved too swiftly and utterly away from mythos and into logos, and they failed to recognize that there may be a point where the two converge. That the Pythagorean thinkers cleaved to logos is not surprising, it is appealing to put our capacity for thought as the paramount vehicle through which reality can be described and understood, however there remain other means by which we understand (or "know") reality than simply cognition and theoretical exercise.
:Theory helps us explain, but we each know more than any of us can put into words.
I believe something to the contrary. There is a reason why many consider Thales and his Miletian buddies as the fathers of western philosophy. It may just be that you have a taste for mystics which I don't share. BTW, have you just worded a meta-theory ;-) ?

Following Anaximenes, I believe we came into being through the condensation of AER - the essence of all matter.

What is the most stupid thing you ever did?!!!
by Spectrum inbtw: excluding joining jwism unless it's too intriguing not to say.
here's mine: .
it was in the day when the paraffin man went around selling to those that still had the old paraffin burners to keep their house warm.

:Can you people honestly say Gods Spirit is Guiding you?
I know I am guided by the spirit of Jehovah of the Armies - at least that's what this spirit told me. Is that the same as God's Spirit?

Accepting your mortality sets you free from JWism.
by Spectrum init was a depressing feeling when i realised i was actually going to die like everybody else.
who me, die?
no chance.

Right on Spectrum. Accepting your mortality sets you free from Jw-ism and all sorts of other BS. All those cliche truisms about "enjoying the moment" take on a whole new meaning.
Here I am at 12.36 PM in my flat in central Poland overlooking vast meadows on the outskirts of my town.
It's hot. I've just found out that one of the things Anaximenes of Miletus is remembered for is his discovery that breath can blow warm (when your mouth is open) or cold when it's hissed out. I've just tested it and it works, but on second thoughts it occurred to me that it was easier for those ancient fellows to be remembered by the generations to come. All you had to do was come up with some crackpot theory that all matter originates with air. Or water, or fire. Or whatever. Too much competition these days ;-). But there are good sides of being forgotten within three generations or so, e.g. no godddamn biographer will write how many times you've cheated on your wife or that you had a drinking problem ;-).
Spring in full swing and I'm ready to face death every moment with the gentle music of John Downland performed by some castrated counter-tenor dude in the background. No I haven't been smoking anything other than the breeze of Polish spring. I fully accept my mortality. Thanks for this thread.

The Point of this Site?
by Samael inforgive me if i sound rude or this question has been answered elsewhere, as i am a neophyte and discovered your site through google in my religious studies.
from reading the various posts it seems that this site serves nothing more than an iconoclastic purpose.
was your experience as jw's so traumatic that now you can but put forth such effort to daemonize the religion?

poodlehead,
Wow, thanks for sharing. It's the best explanation of "the point of this site" so far. It's such a great place for fading and ex-JWs with hundreds of real people who can truly relate to your feelings.

Samael,
Does your nickname have anything to do with the Swiss (?) black metal band. I used to listen to their music as a silly 16-year old kid. Even got hold of one of their demos if I can remember correctly.
Boy, it's a wild guess - just my blast-from-the-past strange intuition - so please verify it before I get carried away ;-).

Samael,
No problem, you are probably the 1000th person in the history of this board making this enlightining point. Move on, shut this site down, go home, nothing to see here. LOL. Since you assure us you are an honest student of various religions, I can assure you that you have still a lot of things to learn about the way the WTS religion works, before you find the answer to your question.
Here is a little hint:
How do you suggest an active brainwashed JW moves on to life outside the WTS? Perhaps it might have something to do with the hundreds of thousands of posts some of which you have read, and dozens if not hundreds of stories of people who were derectly benefitted by this and similar sites on their way out?
'Petulent children', you say? Wait, who said "unless you become like these children..."
Cheers,

Apology of cults
by Narkissos incharles(chasson)' thread about alain garay made me think, more generally, about what we often perceive (rightly or wrongly) as an apology of cults under the banner of "freedom of worship".. it seems only natural that cult members, officials and their attorneys should take such a stance; it is also understandable that communities which have similar interests, like small churches who tend to see anti-cultic policy as a potential threat to their own existence, support them to an extent.
so we have seen, in france, the protestant federation criticising the heavy taxation of jws by the fiscal administration.. i wonder about the motivations of some other voices joining in the chorus.
i suspect they may do so for very different, even antagonistic reasons.. one noteworthy example is the us department of state, whose yearly report on freedom of worship regularly criticises the governmental attempts to control cult activity in other countries (notably, in the eu, france, germany or belgium).

Narkissos,
:The debate is as old as modern democracy
Sure. Good points, although I'm not saying "pas de liberté". All I'm saying is all animals are equal but I wouldn't cry if some animals were made less equal than others ;-). So on the one hand, I think the authorities of Moscow are hypocritical in banning the activities of JWs. But on the other hand I think Jehovah's Witnesses in Poland enjoy many priviledges that they simply don't deserve. (e.g. they are the only group of Conscientious Objectors who don't have to do alternative service unlike Catholic pacifists, and bethelites have their social security paid for by the government just like other members of religious orders, except that JWs point to their preaching work as charity).
:The big question remains why so many people prefer an abusive privacy to a free public space.
Another question is how many of them do really prefer an abusive privacy. How many of them have been manipulated into it and are even unable to voice their concerns? This is where the mainstream Catholic church (at least here) differs from Jehovah's Witnesses for example.
:Can you imagine a Polish government attacking the Catholic hierarchy on the grounds of sexual discrimination for instance?
LOL. Not the one we happen to have quite accidentally at the moment. But sexual discrimination by the Catholic Church is a bit of a strawman. It doesn't really compare with the kind of issues FunkyDerek underlined in his post, does it? I mean, how do you define the difference between a 'mainstream' religion and an abusive cult?
