  Are You A More "Moral" Person Now Than When You Were A Witness?

  if you can be honest, were you more morally upright as a jehovah's witness?

  I now follow a new moral code, one that is not dictated by a handful of "old white guys". My moral code says that sex between two people who are in a committed relationship is okay even if they are not married, and that such behaviour does not merit a person losing family and friends. My moral code says love thy neighbour and show it by doing charitable works, taking part in social activism, voting, etc., not by condemning my neighbour to death if he or she does not believe the same as I do. My moral code dictates that I am humble towards others instead of sanctimoniously believing myself to be better than others because I am in possession of "the truth".

  I could go on, but writing these examples has made me realize that my morals have actually improved.

  What happened to this poor man was criminal, and I believe those RCMP officers should be charged.

  Unfortunately we have a culture of bullying that has apparently infected our police forces, particularly the RCMP, in Canada (although I don't think it's happening only in Canada). This incident is not a lone one. In my city police repeatedly tasered a young man who was drunk and asleep in the back of a car, just because they wanted to wake him up.

  At the same time we've had a couple of high-profile RCMP murders recently. So I don't know if one begets the other - I do believe that when police treat the people they serve (and who pay their salary) with disrespect and in a bullying manner, it leads to people losing respect for the police.

  Just another meeting - the lack of "occasion" and "grief" at JW funeral

  i recently attended the witness funeral of a sister who lost her mother.

  she lived to a good age.. most of the congregation were there.. if the truth be told, it was one of the most disrespectful funerals i have ever been too.

  no one did anything wrong, but everyone was happy - a little too happy.. it was just another meeting to the dubs who attended.

  JW funerals are just another meeting, with one important difference - they view it as a great opportunity to "witness" to all the non-JW relatives in attendance.

  When my aunt died, initially my mom had planned to have a small family gathering at which we could all share our memories of my aunt, something my daughters and I wholeheartedly endorsed. Suddenly the next day she had been overruled by my elder brother and elder uncle, and they set up a regular JW funeral instead.

  It was appalling. One of my nieces even had her bible and was looking up scriptures as if it was the Watchtower study. My daughters and I walked out of there just shaking our heads at what a sham it had been, and then my sister comes up and says, "wasn't that a GREAT funeral talk?"

  The sad thing was, that funeral was exactly what my aunt would have wanted - it would have made her ecstatic if she could have converted a few people by dying.

  Special Bethel Talk Last Week

  as you know i still attend all meetings with my still-in family.

  last sunday a bethel speaker came to our hall (crenshaw congregation) and gave two talks.

  one on "avoiding satan's snares" and the other on "showing patience towards jehovah and his organization.

  Maybe they will wake up and realize college is not the enemy

  but college IS the enemy. Higher education generally exposes you to critical thinking, taking a scientific approach by questioning what you are taught. Having gone back to university finally as an adult I know that what I've learned has reinforced my ability to see through the "truth".

  There may be certain university courses they could find acceptable, In my time they were less critical of going to school to learn trades.

  It makes me sad and angry to see them once again taking a hard line on higher education - raising yet another generation of janitors. (with all due respect to those who choose that profession)

  What's the longest you've spent without going on a computer?

  i don't spend a day without turning on my computer.

  sometimes i wonder how long i could go without turning this thing on..... it's true that i have good music downloaded and i enjoy listening to music and i love reading bad news...lol and i also love to have a peek here on jwd and chat now and then.. since the last 5 years, i guess i didn't spend a day without going on a computer.

  most disturbing movie scene you've seen?

  i haven't seen this topic on here so i thought i'd.... hmmm, maybe it's because it's just too disturbing?

  to me, the scene in saving private ryan - the two soldiers in the small upstairs room fighting hand to hand to the death (by stabbing).

  i think that is the most disturbing thing i've seen on screen and there were plenty just in that film alone.

  One that comes to mind is a scene in Tideland - a movie about a little girl left to fend for herself after both parents die of drug overdoses in front of her. There are scenes of the little girl helping inject her parents that are bad, but the worst one is after her father dies sitting upright in his chair and his corpse begins to rot. Little Jeliza keeps acting like he's just sleeping and climbs on his lap, kisses him, dresses him up - playful things a child might do, but he's already in advanced state of decay. Very disturbing.

  But it's an interesting and thought-provoking movie nonetheless. I think disturbing scenes have a purpose, particularly if they are based in real life - hopefully they help move people out of a comfort zone and prompt us to fight for change.

  Have You Divorced And/Or Remarried- What Did You Learn From It ?

  in seeing a lot of posters threads , i feel i see many people who have been divorced at one time , and either have remarried or have stayed single .

  i totally understand those who choose to stay single, as i was single for 6 years before i got married again !

  as experts say, next to death it's one of the hardest experiences you'll go through !

  Done it twice. Never do it again. never take on someone else's children, especially if there is an ex-wife, formerly disinterested mother in the picture. Divorce is horrible, and divorce lawyers are the bottom of the barrel.

  dark hair, I like long hair in guys. I also like a deep red hair colour in guys. Eyes any colour. No real preference with build, as long as he takes care of his body.

  tofu or soya cheese, soy ice cream - tofu/soyburgers, fake meat....basically anything vegan that pretends not to be

  for instance, i still can't bring myself to say 'bless you' when someone sneezes.

  i still cringe when saying 'good luck' and even now i feel i am being really naughty when shopping for a birthday card for someone.

  For me it took time and a deliberate effort to do certain things. Most things I really enjoy now - voting is a biggie for me, and I really like being able to join in singing Happy Birthday (my 2 year old granddaughter's favourite song!).

  I have to confess, though, that I find Christmas a bit much - the first few years we went all out and made it a big deal, but I found that everyone in my family was getting edgy and unhappy and sometimes it was not turning out well at all. At first I had the awful thought that maybe things weren't going well because there was something wrong in celebrating Xmas (the deeply ingrained JW paranoia). Then I realized that we had never had the opportunity to develop a tradition around xmas, so in many ways it feels forced and artificial. I think it's important to try and make each of these things your own (hehe - sounds like a JW song, don't it?) rather than try to just imitate how "the world" does them. I'm quite comfortable now picking and choosing the things I want to celebrate or participate in, like normal people! - not everyone says "bless you" for example, not everyone celebrates Halloween, some of us feel uncomfortable with blood transfusions as a medical treatment - just because we are now free to do these things doesn't mean we have to do them.
