Divine intervention in finding Whitney's body? Really??
by undercover inhttp://www.katu.com/news/local/search-leader-whitney-heichels-sweater-first-clue-found-by-searchers-175893161.html.
new article in local media how the jw church played a crucial role in finding whitney heichel's body.
the true part is that the jw community does come together at times of crisis to help each other, no critique of that.

Educated Criticism Will MESS YOU UP
by Farkel insince the days of da judge, dub leaders have scorned education and science.
to, victims, predators, moral degenerate, selfish, liar, anarchist, pawn of satan, materialistic, drug addicted, fetus-killing, promiscuous slut we can now add homosexual, marriage wrecker, juvenile and adult delinquent with venereal disease.. see what getting a genuine education or reading works by those who have one can do to you?

Wow. What an excellent essay! Thank you, Farkel, and thank you Tal for bringing it back. It made me laugh and cry. So subtle and sneaky how they have demonized any type of higher education and critical thinking.
I agree with you on the grammar analogy - ridiculous. One of the most common and effective education techniques is to provide examples of poor grammar, which the student must correct. No one can learn good grammar simply by studying the rules. Examples!!
I also got a kick out of this one. Yeah, JW's bible preaching IS "uncultured language of barbarians"
*** w59 3/1 139 Warnings of Jehovah's Unusual Work ***
Jehovah’s witnesses do not speak to them their language, the language of the sectarian creeds, the language of higher criticism, the language of philosophy. Our Bible preaching is to the clergy a foreign tongue, a jargon of our own, like the uncultured language of barbarians. -

Kate82 - I think you will find cognitive behaviour therapy very helpful. Stick with it - getting healthy takes work, but it's worth it.
Just a comment re Buddhism. I don't know a lot about it, but I'm currently working closely on a project with a practicing Buddhist. Her ideas are very close to mine. There is a focus on keeping mind, body, soul and spirit healthy, and in balance. She has philosophies like appreciating single moments in time rather than being distracted by the past or the future, and embracing good things in life each day. It's a very positive perspective, one that encourages self-knowledge and insight.
I agree with those who have expressed concern about you feeling like you could be easily led. Take your time on this journey and make sure you are as healthy mentally as you can be before you take any major steps. You are doing the all right things.

I like Cedars and I'm a big fan of the work he does. But I was not happy with how things played out either.
In general, I think forum discussions remain healthier when mods keep a hands-off, sort things out yourself attitude for the most part. On another forum where I used to be an active member, the owner went in and actually removed pieces of posts to suit his viewpoint. I won't ever post there again. So things can get ridiculous.
This forum is the best, and has stayed that way because Simon (and Angharad) keep it that way. A time out doesn't hurt anyone. It seems to me that a number of posters here have had their hands slapped and come back. In the big picture this needs to be a place where ex-JWs and others can come to sort things out, without being attacked.

The WT proves again that it does not understand Child Psychology
by Christ Alone ini posted this elsewhere, but wanted to create a thread about this specifically.
here is one way that i think the wt is absolutely wrong in it's advice on raising children:.
in the 1/13 awake they talk about mistakes that parents make with their children.

Interesting thread. I agree with Oodad that they know enough child psycholoogy to manipulate vulnerable little minds. But the point about healthy psychology and self-esteem is right on, CA.
In reflecting, my non-JW dad was less likely to offer praise. My mother did. In fact, in some areas she praised me too much and built me up to think I was better than other kids, when I wasn't. For example, she encouraged me to audition for the role of the young Mozart in some stage production because she thought I played piano so well. I was mortified when I had to go up against a kid who played at a grade 10 level compared to my grade 2 plunkings. Part of it was her own naivety, I think. But certainly the religion led her to teach us that we were better than those who did not know "the truth"
My self-esteem was always tightly connected to the religion. By pioneering and going where the need was great, I felt better about myself. Same when I made insightful comments, or played the piano at the hall. When those things were taken away, it was devastating. I think that's why getting reinstated was my turning point. I realized that although they had destroyed my false, JW-connected self-esteem by DFing me, in reality I was still the same person. It took me a long time to develop self-esteem outside the religion.
Now, on the topic of over-praise, I think it definately can be problematic, although Watson's attachment theory (and those poor Rhesus babies) demonstrates the other extreme. But I see far too many parents praising their children for things that should be expected behaviours. If you learn to expect praise for everything you do, it can cripple normal development and your ability to interact socially. it can cheapen the value of the praise and remove incentive for self-improvement. There are a lot of factors involved - the types of things you offer praise for, whether it's reasonable and balanced, whether the child also receives constructive criticism.
And kids know the difference. When I praised my grandson's artwork, his older brother piped up and said, "actually, grama, it's not that good" and he proceeded to point out areas needing improvement.

So, how do you pamper yourself when you're poorly?
by Lozhasleft ini've got a throat infection.
i came home today and went for broke.

Some years ago my dear little brother helped me renovate my bathroom, adding a lovely jet tub. I think of him each time I use it.
But when I'm sick I usually don't even have the energy to drag myself into the tub. I usually just wrap myself in my quilt and stay in bed. The hot toddies help. I read or watch TV, but mostly I sleep. I've always believed the most effective treatment for illness and the way I pamper myself is to sleep as much as possible until I feel better again.
