And HATE to bash on the dubs, but it seems EVERY single brother I've met takes such great pride in thinking they are a handyman and can do anything from Painting to Carpentry.
That's, in my opinion, just a "Christ complex". It's the idea that "I'm a handyman - JUST LIKE JESUS".
Actually, Jesus was a trained carpenter. I'd love to see him do electrical work!
We happen to be remodeling our condo. Split entry - Kitchen Liv, Dining up, Bedrm, Hall, Laundry closet down. Rebuilding stairs. (We did bathrooms 3 years ago; mid level bedroom is a library-and was redone 10 years ago and there is no way we are going to move all those books, and 3rd bedroom, well, we just wont go there... ;)
We ended up ripping out 2 walls of sheetrock because of the celltex behind it to get at the wiring. We ripped out the soffits above the cabinets so we could regain that space with ceiling-high cabinets. We ripped out part of a partition wall. Went down to the subfloor and added underlayment. The stairs were so bad Kevan had to patchup and rebuild the stringers!
The place was built in 1973-4 when craftsmanship had been dead for 10 years, and building codes hadn't caught up.
So far the things that have gone WRONG have been very minor, and either easily repairable or tolerable. Except one:
Installing the Icemaker in the older GE fridge. THAT had been a real pain in the arse!
I called GE and asked what icemaker to buy for our model of fridge. They told me. We bought it. Everything will install except the electrical outlet in the freezer is completely different from the plug on the icemaker!
I called GE. I was told that everything was there to install it properly. I explained a third time what the problem was. She spoke with her supervisor. "Oh, there was an adaptor for that, but we no longer manufacture it. I'm sorry." "Do you have the mfg number?" "No, we don't." "Can I speak with your supervisor?" hold "No, I'm sorry, there is no one else here you can speak with."
I'm not often speachless, but I was several times during that conversation.
Our solution is to find/buy the plug and wiring from a new freezer and rewire ours. The cost difference is $70 vs $500+ for a new fridge with icemaker. I'm a nerd when it comes to electronic stuff and this "should" be relatively easy, if I can just FIND the @*$(# part.
BTW KILZ works fairly well for stain and bright paint coverage. You still may have to use several coats to get good coverage. I've had to use 4-6 coats to keep the brown wood stain from bleeding through on our woodwork. But I'm getting there...
At least a bamboo bathroom is small and easily repainted....
