They don't "own" God

yesterday, talking to a dear wise friend, she said about jehovahs witnesses, "they don't own god.

" that simple statement said so much to me.

she said that so many religions have taken god and act like they and only they own him.

Good one BD. You know how hard it is to get to know someone via writing to them only, right? There comes a time, when you need to meet them face to face to fill in certain personality traits, character quirkiness, facial expression, intonation, what is said verses not said, etc etc etc that this medium just cannot convey. You cannot truly know someone through the printed word alone.

SO, my point is, to think that you have ownership of God and what he is, his intent, motivation, his ways, his purpose, etc is ridiculous because it is only through that printed medium that he reveals himself, and to make things even harder, he did it through other people. He didn't even write it himself, so 'he' is seen through the filters of bible writers!

Yet so many religions claim to have such a crystal clear image of him and his purposes, his intent in 'allowing' writers to write what they did. How could we own any part of 'God' when there is no way to even 'know' him. I haven't met him, have you?

The only way you can own God is if you created him. Bingo.

Reflections on family - your ideas?

i recently got an e-mail from my brother.

there were pictures of his kids and wife, visiting my ageing parents.

my wife was excited to see recent pictures.

I would rather go and see them and know, than not know. I would hate to fantasize about what could be, was etc. Maybe they have changed as well, maybe they won't try to change you, rather just accept you. You won't have the answers to any of your questions unless you go and see for yourself. Then you can have final closure if it is just too uncomfortable, or you could have a new start based on new boundaries and respect.

I've never thought about it quite in those terms. But it's so true! How selfish and small-minded. Things I already knew, but put in this verbiage it takes on a deeper meaning. Thanks for that! Andi

Your comment reminded me that she said that thinking you "own" God or have "the truth" is the ultimate arrogance and one wonders just what God would think, looking down and seeing a small group of people leading, counselling, punishing, setting rules, boundaries, etc..In other words usurping HIS headship and authority. i watched dr. phil yesterday, where they were highlighting the disappearance of natalee holloway who disappeared in aruba over 5 months ago, and amy bradley who vanished from a cruise ship 7 years ago.

i always assumed that these girls were raped and then murdered and they very likely could be, but the program highlighted the sex-slave trade that is growing in leaps and bounds all over the world.

i sat there and listened in shock as one guy revealed what happens to some of these girls during snuff movies.

I believe that it does not get worse or better, it just gets different.

In the 16th century most English towns had stocks and whipping posts. Drunks, fraudulent merchants, adulterers, and quarrelers could be placed in carts or backwards on asses and paraded around the streets for crowds to jeer and throw refuse at. Women accused of being scolds could be publically muzzled by and iron device called a brank or tied to a "cucking stool" and dunked in the river. Convicted criminals could have their ears cut off, their noses slit, their foreheads branded. Public hangings and beheadings were common. You could be "hanged by the neck, and being alive cut down, and your privy membes to be cut off, and your bowels to be taken out of your belly and there burned, you being alive." (English Literature 7ed M.H. Abrams et al) One more thing, I refuse to watch sensationalized shit like that. I get too many questions in my head, like: what has the trend been in the last 10 years regarding snuff movies, better? worse? same? How many crimes of this nature are happening? How often? In which part of the world? Why? Who is involved in these crimes? Who researched this? With what intent? What does Dr.Phil want us to do about it? What is his motive in showing this? What can I do? Why does he want to shock me? What is the purpose of this type of journalism? What is being done to stop this? Who in power knows about this? What are they doing? What programs are in place to stop this that I may not know about? Who is fighting this crime that may not have been reported on? etc etc etc...

well, on the weekend she got a job offer from her aunt.

her aunt is starting up a company and needs someone to do just that!

She said that so many religions have taken God and act like they and only they own him. That they have exclusive rights to him. That they and only they have the right to interpret his scriptures, his intent, his motives, his actions. She said that she finds this kind of thinking Satanic or anti-Christ. I had never thought of it in those terms before, "They don't own God."
