Xianity is less successful at controlling the them and us paradigm when it is the dominant religion. Islam is likely to have the same issues but adds a cultural layer of secrecy against the laws of the west. The more secretive and hierarchical a society the more opportunities exist for the paedophiles to realise their sexual fantasies. It is all about opportunity. Ditto for all other abuses such as rape ( for example roughly 25% of US servicewomen experience sexual abuse including rape from fellow soldiers according to the BBC article on their website .)

Why do only xian religions have soo many pedo problems ?
by mP inim not trying to poke fun at any particular religion or show favouritism, but im having a hard time recalling similar repeated scandals in non xian religions.
i cant recall hearing of pedo scandals in islam or buddism.
yes i know that islam perpetrates many other evils like so call honour killings but buddhism seems to be rarely in the news for similar evils ?

This is great news if the WT changes it's policies and more children are protected.
I still don't understand how these vast sums are calculated. 28 million is way too much, its out of proportion and will presumably be appealed and dragged out for years and then paid in tiny installments. I do struggle when one victim gets the jackpot while tens of thousands of abused kids have no voice or hope of recompense.
I'd be happier if the WT was convicted and had to put some stupendous sum into a general third party child abuse fund which paid out a fixed sum to all victims and was then given a specific process to follow in future and a standing huge fine where said process was not followed. This process should immediately expose, to the law, all currently undisclosed paedophiles within the organisation.
Still - this is a bittersweet victory against abuse and cover ups. Well done all those actively campaigning this is a great win.

..on my head. In some small way I think I understand one reason for shaving new recruits or prisoners. As I did it I felt sick in my stomach and it felt like I was losing some of my personality. I never realised it would affect me that way. I was in shock afterwards. Mrs Q. Was not happy either. Very strange experience.Didn't help that I cut myself to ribbons as well. Ho hum.

Jesus ,the son of GOD,on earth as a man, never wrote down his words of wisdom, message of salvation, only talked to a minority group, majority of what he preached was never recorded by observers,?
by smiddy indoesn`t this sound a little bit odd to you ?
according to christendom/jehovah`s witnesses in particular , the greatest man who ever lived, had the means at his disposal,to write down everything he had to say for the benefit of all mankind ,jew and gentile, and he never availed himself of this priveledge .rather most of what he had to say, according to the bible, was lost,no one recorded all he spoke ..he was quite content to leave it up to a few, who would put his words to pen, many of which were not eyewitness accounts to his deeds.,but received the information secon-hand.
if the almighty god jehovah and his son jesus christ were in anyway serious, wouldn`t they have made this" so important" message available to all mankind ?

..and when it was written down it was allowed to be interpreted without further divine correction thenceforth generating many thousands of belief systems. Wasn't that important a message. Also any particular reason why he came when he did? - seems that Jesus should have died for all sins the afternoon of the alleged apple incident rather than turning up in the middle of a Roman occupation where the media was largely the spoken word.

What it takes to become an atheist.
by dontplaceliterature ini was pondering this today during lunch, and to me it seems that it comes down to whether or not you can accept that you will one day be permanantly gone and anyone you have lost in death will never be alive again.
once a person becomes comfortable with these two ideas, there isn't really any incentive to believe.
maybe it's an over simplification, but it seems to me that this is the heart of the matter.

Shamus - some of us want to help those trapped by childish beliefs. You seem to like to be childish with your kiss the monkey pap but no one bothers to call you on it because its not important and it seems to make you happy - it is bloody annoying when you trash a thread with it but I just bite my tongue and move on. Religion however, is important and while it can indeed make people happy it does so at a high cost to intelligent enquiry and logical decsion making. It can also have a sinister side that allows people to control others, 'steal' money, make fatal health decisions or waste their lives chasing a phantom dream. For some of us that is a tragedy and - speaking for myself but hopefully for others - watching it silently is not an option.

It's good to read a women's POV - my exit concerns were somewhat different (for example I wasn't worried at all by the gossip - I kinda liked the stir!)

Should I attend a JW funeral?
by Flat_Accent ini mean, i had respect for the guy, and it's obviously right to be there for the family and show support.
however, i can imagine what it will be like going back.
i was friendly with a lot of the older, tougher sisters, so i'm sure they'll get on my case.

Go and show respect and support for family IMO. What we do defines us. Don't let yourself be defined by JWs potential actions.
