by Qcmbr inwhenever the world has a bit of a hiccup (like the y2k bug) people seem to be keen to pick up their religious feelings again.. are there any situations that might make you heed back through the kingdom hall doors again???

Tough question Scooby , I haven't left....If I think back to when I was wobbling it wasn't because I didn't believe it was more that I was feeling a little pointless after returning from my two year mission - things weren't so intenses anymore. If I had left at that point I don't think it would have taken much to get me back. Of late things that are interesting to me and might persuade an 'apostate me' back are: 1/ Building a security wall 'around' Jerusalem. 2/ Genetics research (i.e. presumably God would need to step in soon before we go too far) 3/ Global warming - (LDS believ the end would accompanied by dramatic weather changes..) 4/ AIDS and actually more scary for me that flesh eating virus that briefly struck in 1992 (I think that was the year.) 5/ The perception I have that all governments are corrupt and possibly being manipulated from external sources (again another believe that secret societies would be rife in the 'last days' and would almost destroy the constitution of the US) 6/ Biggest one of all - the almost total disintegration of the family as an idealogical unit (at least in the UK - I'm not well travelled) I work for the government and all forms now refer to partners and its actually wrong to refer to marriage. Children are extremelly likely to be from a single parent family nad to know two , three etc.. 'fathers' in their growing up years. Vast growth in porn and preoccupation with sex. 7/ Growth of extremism along with the technology to actually cause global harm.

Need some scriptures ...
by Wild_Thing innormally, i do not get involved in biblical debate, being that i am a doubting atheist, but a friend of mine made a comment that struck a nerve with me, probably because her mentality seems to echo those of jws.
the question was asked if all humans are considered "god's children" (was not asked by be, of course).
this was her response:.

God considers himself Father of all but if the children reject the Father...: John 12 25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

The British NHS........ What is your view?
by ScoobySnax inthe nhs is a hot issue at present with the forthcoming uk elections pending in may, both main parties are trying to monopolise the issue of our health service.
it is a unique service where faults of course can be found (as in the current news story) but having worked and given my best for the last 15 years in it, i feel proud of it.
what experience do you/have you had of the nhs?

Its not ahealth service its a factory - I hate it! I have been treated like so much dirty rubbish while waiting for the birth of my daughter / waiting for consultants who saunter all over the place without any urgency / puzzled by rows and rows of disused beds and wards in my local hospital. It is an absolute disaster area that eats money. Most of the diseases they treat are made worse in their. Am I off my head - maybe but tell that to my wife who went in for a bunion removal - got mistaken for an eighty year old in for a leg amputation - now my wife has plastic and pins in her leg where they had to rectify the mess. To top it all of they 'lost' the records so that she couldn't sue. I really hate the NHS - I am embarrassed by it. If it was a horse they'd shoot it.

Have any of you examined early christian history and found many problems?
by booker-t injust for a moment imagine that you are talking to a person and he mentions to you that you have to baptize animals in order to be saved or that you have to believe in the trinity doctrine that is composed of god the father, god the son and god the mother(mary) would you believe that these were some of the things early christians believed in.
would you be shocked to know that many dates were set for jesus to rapture up the christians in the sky and nothing materalized?
many born-again christians argue you down tooth and nail stating that born-again christianity does not have skelatons in their closets like the mormons and jw's but the truth of the matter born-again christianity has many, many embarassing skelatons.

I think early christianity had the same problems we have and that is as soon as the law givers (prophets / Jesus) are gone everyone squabbles about what means what and take everything out of context - voila multiple belief systems all vting for converts at each others expense. To me we all sign over some of our own personal beliefs when we identify with any group or faith (not just religious)and take on board beliefs that don't sit well with us. If we then find ourselves too far from our belief comfort zone we become ex-whatevers and move onto whatever belief system next appeals to us. Personally I think LDS rock but that's not most peoples boat - I've looked at various bits of early christian history and its certainly very different to the modern day born again's. When I used to do my door to door bit I used to get so much crap from BA's and I realised that they were as deluded as they thought I was. No one likes to admit they are wrong.

Church from Bible, Bible from Church?
by Big Dog inafter leaving the borg and through research convincing myself that the wbts did not have the "truth" i began to read a wide variety of religous materials and tried to delve into as many faiths as possible.
i was curious what others believed and after growing up in such an insular faith i found it fascinating to learn about all the different philosophies and beliefs.
one particular issue i found especially interesting, and that was the issue of sola scriptura, " simply stated, the protestant doctrine of sola scriptura ("scripture alone") teaches that every teaching in christian theology (everything pertaining to "faith and practice") must be able to be derived from scripture alone.

I think we need new scriptures...:)
Seriously though isn't it just so odd that we hold so tenaciously to faiths that are built upon interpretations of the bible that are so wacky and plainly wrong. I remember in my preaching days that I found people who believed just as strongly as me in their own interpretation of the bible and quite often I felt like taking one and whupping them in the mush. Of course the feeling was normally mutual. Clearly the bible alone is no more a basis for religion than a rice pudding is for a house.
Funnily enough I was talking to some JWs in my house and I sat and said to them..'Why do you believe you are right and have any authority to teach me?'
One said that 'The bible is our authority..' I just kinda gave up and put my bible away.

I have other sheep
by IP_SEC ini have other sheep.
john 10:16 is one of those overused scriptures that seem to prove the dual destiny doctrine.
(john 10:16) 16 ?and i have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those also i must bring, and they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock, one shepherd.

OO can't resist
I have just read some posts here about lost sheep that is as bad as some of the JW stuff..!!
Just to list of some scriptures:
(
New Testament | John 1 : 30 - 31 )- John the Baptist - Point Jesus to be made manifest to Israel.30
This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.(
New Testament | Matthew 19 : 28 )- Israel is much more than the tribe of Judah28
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(
New Testament | Luke 2 : 31 - 32 ) - Gentiles are not Israel (the people)31
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.(
New Testament | Romans 9 : 4 - 6 ) - It is possible to be adopted into Israel4
Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; 5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:(
New Testament | Hebrews 8 : 8 - 9 ) - Again more than just Jews8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.(
New Testament | Matthew 10 : 5 - 6 ) - Preaching was initially to Israel5
These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.(
New Testament | Matthew 15 : 24 ) - Jesus' mission not to Gentiles24
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.(
New Testament | John 10 : 16 ) - Surely all Israel have the same promise - not just Judah?6 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
..so after all that - so what if the LDS claim to have a book by other Israelites?? - what we should all be looking for / expecting is many records of Jesus appearing to many Israelite remnants..
