Crisis of Conscience: POLL
by Grout inwell, i'm finally reading coc, and i must tell you that despite already being an ex-dub i was *shocked*.
the thing that got me was the gb's apparently unselfconsciously acting above all the rules that they would apply so harshly to everyone else.
maybe i'm naive, but i didn't expect that level of hypocrisy.. so what did you find most shocking in coc?

Ray franz's book helped me tremendously but I did not like his advocation of another religion. It's cool though. It took me a while to get my hands on it. I ordered a special inter-library state loan copy of it, but my mom intercepted the notice the library sends you that your book is ready and she went to the library and destroyed it. (how, i dont know) so i had to buy it from a christian book store.

Do you know how fast the world is changing?
by Mindchild inwhile you were sleeping the world is changing in very unusual ways.. do you think that you have been doing a good job keeping up with new discoveries that may change your life?.
here are just three things i pulled out of the news just on the topic of food and gardening that happened in the last month that might surprise you.. 1. scientists have discovered how to make delicious steaks without killing any animals.
this will soon be going into commercial use and may radically affect the worldwide meat industry.

Hey speaking of new technologies, those of you familair with quantum mechanics, 'spooky action at a distance' will be happy to note that scientists have already teleported matter and will teleport larger things soon.
Speed, and more speed
Peter Shor at AT&T Laboratories in Florham Park, N.J., showed that a quantum computer could solve several types of problems much faster than they could be solved on a conventional computer.
Such problems range from factoring large prime numbers, the key to breaking data-encryption codes, to the "traveling salesman" problem, which tries to find the most efficient path for people to take if they need to visit several customers in a given amount of time.
Quantum computers, Wootters notes, require large assemblages of entangled particles to achieve the data-crunching power required to solve these problems. Entanglement also holds the key to quantum communication and quantum teleportation - ways of transferring quantum information within and among quantum computers.
The possibility of quantum teleportation was first posited in 1993 by IBM researcher Charles Bennett and colleagues.
"Teleportation is a really unfortunate term," says University of Michigan physicist Christopher Monroe. "It implies moving people from point A to point B," when in fact it refers to "creating a quantum state in one place that used to exist somewhere else" with no intervening connection.
In order to instantly teleport those states, he continues, the sender and receiver must share entangled resources, such as Polzik's atomic clouds.
In what Dr. Monroe calls the most notable teleportation experiment yet, three years ago a team of researchers at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena used quantum teleportation to transfer photons over a three-foot distance.
Unlike other experiments that destroyed the transported photons as part of the process that confirmed their arrival, the Cal Tech group devised a system to verify the photons' arrival without destroying them.
The next step, Monroe continues, will be to teleport states of atoms or other particles of matter - a feat he estimates is still 20 years away.

UN involvement announced at Assembly?
by Simon ini heard from someone that the wts was going to or had already announced something about the un involvement at an assembly.
anyone else heard of this or is it a local thing ?.
i would guess they may have only done this because of the coverage in the uk national newspaper which they know they have to counter.

active and happy jw
by scumgrief ini am an active jw and was raised as one.
i have been watching the site for a while and thought it could benefit from the opinions of someone who is happily a member of the jw's.
i will not get into any argumets that lead to nothing except name calling, and will not talk with anyone who is just plain mean (plenty of them in here).

Your obsession with the whole "____ or die" is obviosly the result of something that happened to you. I have never in any assembly or meeting I've been to been told that. Or even had that hinted to me.
Really? Not even hinted at?
Hmmmmm...yeah you are right there is no hints there. No join us or this will happen to you even insinuated.Wow..whats that in the background? Death? Chaos? Yup. No hints here either though. No veiled threats of join us or this will happen to you.
Look! Even puppies get killed.
Hmm..yeah I keep looking but I still see no veiled threats of join us or die. Never mind guess I was wrong.-Dan

The Bristol assembly hall scandel
by sleepy inis there anyone from the area who remmbers the story of the 30,000 spent on trees for the vist of a gb memmber.. i dont know the exact story as it is now about 7 or 8 years ago but i heard it from several people that worked on the hall.. apparently a gb memmber was to come to britian to dedicate the hall (i cant remmember which one).. the brothers in charge wanted the hall to look nice for his vist.but the land around was yet to be landscaped.. so brothers enquired as to the viability of planting some trees but were informed that it was the wrong time of year and they would die.. the cost of the trees was around the region of 30,000.plus the amount of free labour from the brothers in planting them.. anyway the big bosses of the scheme decided to ignore the professional advice and planted them anyway.. they all died.. 30.000 pounds of money from old ladies, pioneers and little children as well as ordinary publishers went down the drain for the gb's visit.. nice to know they used our money wisely.

Wait a second, that sounds like an urban legend or a real peace of history borrowed from somewhere...I remember reading about a soviet official who visited a factory, loved the greenery so the soviet army had them plant green trees even though it was the wrong time of year along a road that stretched from the landing pad to the site of inspection. The trees all died so they ended up painting them green. This was during world war II or so...I will research it and find out. It looks like more than one important offical gets his way with trees.
