  Another difference between science and religion is that science doesn't claim to have all the answers, nor "The Truth". In the case of the 'first cause' of life, all we have are ideas being batted around. There are some pretty good ideas, but nothing anyone would want to bet their life on.

  One of the cool things about letting go of dogma is the wonder of not knowing stuff. Not individual ignorance, like my appalling lack of knowledge of history. SOMEBODY knows history, and I could read their book and know what they know. But the first cause of life is currently an unknown to EVERYBODY.

  That's kinda neat.

  Hook Lines or Phrases Jehovah's Witnesses Use to Control You

  to control a person, or control a group of people , any cult , including jehovah's witnesses , have to gain your trust that they are the authority on what you need to know.

  even people have been known to use these " catch phrases " to gain trust , or " hook lines " as you'd call them to gain control over groups of people or individually in their own lives.

  see if you are familiar with these phrases which empower the sender of the phrase , but demands rapt allegiance from listeners to be the " gospel truth " without challenge , which can take the listeners power away.

  The UN Thing

  i would like to pick the brains of those in the know..... so i am kinda preparing for the big conversation with my mom, but i am not being brave about it - i have unplugged my phone, just in case she tries to call me tonight.

  what i am looking for is a bit of advice on the un thing... i have read the un letter, and i have found the jw spin in response.

  what would be a suitable rebuttal for their spin on why they were members?

  Several people have drawn a comparison between the Watchtower's involvement with the U.N. and an average publisher's involvement with the YMCA. As you may know, belonging to the YMCA is a disfellowshipping offense. But what if a publisher merely joined to have access to the swimming pool? Would it be ok then?

  If not, would it be enough for the publisher to just cancel his membership? Or would he need to meet with the elders? What if the publisher vehemently defended his actions, "But I only did it to get access to the pool! I don't need to 'repent'!" The elders would certainly counsel him for his lack of repentence, and may even disfellowship him anyway.

  The Watchtower did discontinue their membership, though I believe history shows they did it only AFTER their membership was made public. But they have never said, "This was a mistake, and we're sorry".

  The double-standard evident in their handling of their own missteps and those of their members is disturbing.

  For those who were on restrictions: Did it bother you not to comment?

  i'm curious to know if not beng able to comment at meetings was something you felt badly about if you were on restrictions.. i don't comment anyway, but i hardly think not being able to comment is a "restriction" in itself.. .

  I was more bothered by the fact that there was NO scriptural backing for it. At least with DF'ing, they make an attempt to make it seem biblical. But they don't even try to justify the "restrictions" idea.

  why would a person choose that path when it leads to criticism, hatred, alienation, high cholesterol etc.

  why wouldn't they just be normal if they could.

  i am always interested to read the reasons people have for rejecting the wtbts.

  many people seem to really object to specific doctrines or specific actions of the wt leadership.

  i didn't leave the org.
