Heard a story of a brother on microphone duty who went to the bathroom with the wireless mic turned on in his jacket pocket. Back in the auditorium, the brother reading the paragraph was nearly drowned out by the sound of water trickling. No one really knew what was going on till a fart echoed out of the speakers.

Well, it had to happen. My first opportunity to show my new colours. Had a phone call today from the elder who takes our bookstudy. (I havent been for close to 1 yr)
He said: " Phil, brother X and myself would like to pop aroung sometime soon to see how you and your family are going."
I said: "You mean a shepherding visit?"
"Um, yes"
" well, you see, i kinda know what you're going to say, so i'd rather give it a miss."
"well, even i dont know that yet, we'll just play it by ear when we get there. Is friday evening o.k?"
"mate, if its ok with you, i'd prefer it if you didn't come around. I dont mean to be rude."
"Well, ok. No worries. I'll be in touch. " And he hung up.
Can I get into trouble for refusing a shepherding visit. This is my second refusal, although last time i said we were going away (OK, i lied). They will probably just drop in now, un-announced. Whats the rules? What could he do?
I'm not overly worried - dont get me wrong. We were just hoping to drift away quietly, didn't want to make any waves. Should i be up-front with them, or just keep stalling, and hope they go away?

End of the World
by jwcurious in.
i'm new here, i married a jw and i have just started attending the meetings, and it confuses me alot.. but back to my question, my grandmother once told me that jw's in the 50's proclaimed the end of the world and sold all their personal belongings and went up on a mountian and waited for god, has anyone else heard of this?

My dad was halfway through an apprenticeship in 73'. His mum was a witness, but his dad wasn't. He decided to give up his apprenticeship and full time pioneer. All his friends were doing it. Grandad was very opposed to the idea. Dad ended up working as a milkman doing early morning deliveries, then going pioneering.
Anyhow, i know he regrets it, but it is never talked about. I only put it all together this year. I had never heard of the societies prophecies before. My dad is not strong in the truth, just goes through the motions. He must feel betrayed! Out of my whole family, i think he might be the next one to follow me out.

I remember sitting in the city's large entertainment centre, during the district assembly, and the bro talking about how the centres management just loved having us. We were a great company of peolpe who were well behaved and tidy.
Also, we came to the centre the day before and gave it a total clean - top to bottom - for free. Then we assign our own ushers and attendants, so their boys can just stand there and do nothing for 3 days. Then at the end, we cleaned it again - top to bottom - for free.
Sure they loved us, cause we saved them so much frigging money. Never gave a discount on the complex's hire though.

How many were religious????????
by vitty ini know you cant know whats in someones head or mind, but in a average congregation of about a 80 to 100 people how many would you say were religious!.
i can say in mine there was about 6 that i would say were genuine people.
the rest i felt believed in the "truth" i did, but they were either scared of armageddon or peer pressureot to save face .

On a personal level, I am finding myself more interested in spritual subjects than when I was an active JW. Its hard to explain, but I think i was so concerned with the trivial things that are taught to be so important in "the truth" - pre-study, answering up, witnessing hours, preparing talks etc... that I left behind what was important, my personal relationship with god.
I now see that most in the hall are so caught up in these matters that this becomes their form of worship. These ones would ask "havent seen you at the hall for a while," and any answer would sufice. Going to the hall 3 times a week was their way of showing their faith.
I dont know how many were truely whole-heartedly religious. Mabey none. Mabey the more zealous ones were just playing the game better than everyone else. How is it possible to overlook all the policy changes and just accept them. To be told "this is the year", and then to be told "we never said last year was "the year" ".

IF YOU ARE FADING?
by vitty indo you still go to the memorial?
and if not is this a reason to dfs you?.
and if or when you stopped going did you feel guilty?.
-
phil78
This will be our first missed memorial ever. We have family in the cong, who accept (i think) that we are taking time out to sort issues. No meeting for me for over 9 months, my wife 4 months. But to be sitting at home wile the memorial is on would be seen as herracy by the family. I am considering going on holiday, and the memorial unfortunately will fall in that week!

Christmas tradition - for kids
by Dawn ini initiated a christmas tradition with my son when he was little and have continued it all these years - thought i'd share it with you in case you have little ones.. since my kids just can't wait to open their presents, i wrap one special gift for them to open x-mas eve.
it's always the same thing - brand new pajamas and a cuddly toy for bed time.
my kids absolutely loved this christmas eve tradition.

Our boy is now 11 weeks old. This year for the first time ever we are going to the annual chrismas street party. Just our neighbours having a chrismas get-together. They have someone play santa, and give out presents pre-supplied by the parents. My wife went out and bought Taydan his. Obviously, he wont understand a single thing. Its more for us at this stage, trying to fit in and source a new crowd of friends. Its amazing, but we dont know hardly anyone in the street, but we have been here 3 years.
We are just going to enjoy the tradition, and let it go on from there.

Marriage question
by starfish422 ini have a question for those who got married in a jw ceremony, or who became jws after being married.
did the elder marrying you, or those studying with you, counsel you as to what forms of sexual intercourse are acceptable within jehovah's loving organization(tm)?
just having a "discussion" of sorts on another board and i'm being challenged by a dutiful jw wife.

We had no sex talk given to us before we were married. But mabey 2 years ago a "Special Day" assembly had a talk about something menial, but included in it was the sentence "We must ensure that the marriage bed is not defiled by practices normaly carried out by homosexuals".
Those words brought me out of my slumber, hoping for something else as juicy. But that was it.
Our drive home that night debated that subject. Did they mean Male homosexuals, of female, or both? I though they meant just male, but the in-laws weren't keen to debate the subject
