Andrea Yates and the cult connection
by gringojj ini was watching an e true hollywood story about andrea yates last night.
i had heard of the murder before, but i didnt realize there was cult influence.
it seems the yates had gotten mixed up with a man who preached the bible and was a self proclaimed prophet.

geez, I'm sorry. Funny how she automatically thinks you're lying, eh? I don't know if this is a JW trait or not. I do know I have a lot of experience with this...but who am I to judge...it's a hard habit to break...I still struggle with it.
Regardless, I hope everything turns out okay for you. In the least you have the right attitude...but I'm still sorry for you in that some people have to be so goddam stubborn, hurtful, and wrong.

I'm from Seattle. But although I love the so-called gourmet crap Seattle has become known for...I'm not all that picky. I love coffee in general. The only stuff I have a problem with is some instant coffees....because they give me a stomach ache.

Sad, sad, cult story.... not Jw!
by AK - Jeff inhaving my daily brew today, and reading diane wilson's book - awakening of a jw.
the barista overhears a conversation i am having with a regular there and asks what 'cult' i had exited.
i told her jw and we had a nice conversation.. she tells me her husband's family was in a cult in pennsylvania called the 'temple.....' something.

This is a good site...but heartbreaking. They also have a newsletter you can get.Rebecca Moore is one of the people that started the site--she's also a professor in Religious Studies at San Diego State. She also lost her oldest sister at Jonestown.

That's odd. In every congregation I ever attended, there was at least one interracial marriage. I never heard any untoward comments about them, either. But then, I lived on the US's Left Coast; that might have explained it. Maybe it's a regional thing.
Same hear....in my congregation it only mattered how much money you made. There was more than one interracial marraige in the KH. It was the poor people they looked down upon as a whole.

Ah, Josie ....I won't leave just yet....at the moment I'd miss reading your posts too much. And I really wouldn't leave over something as small as this...I just think it's strange...
You put it in a way I understand though Josie

Unlearning
by Narkissos inthe experience of unlearning, i guess, is part of any human life, but is something we particularly have in common as xjws.
once upon a time we knew it all -- the right and the wrong things to think or to do -- and then we had to unlearn somehow.
give up beliefs, ideas, prejudices, attitudes, etc.. the discussions on this board suggest that we all had -- and have -- different ways or strategies in unlearning.

When my mother left so did I (even though at 12 I didn't believe). My mom told people for a long time that when she left some of it had to do with me at 15 asking her questions she couldn't answer and refusing to speak to elders....but I know there was a lot more to it. For me, "unlearning" came at an early age--- I guess it was being around other people or non-JWs...when I realized people could be even better individuals than the JWs I was brought up around it got me thinking...and then rebelling.
