I never said that the JW are a cult. I did say that these 2 paragraphs are misleading. Your analogy of the Catholic faith/ WT is correct in my opinion. For the Wt to say we only look to Jesus and no man is misleading. Everyone knows that Jesus is using The WT and only through the WT can we get salvation. Dont forget they inserted themselves in the babtism questions. Spirit directed organization = Men

Outright Lie in the Reasoning Book
by PaNiCAtTaCk inunder the topic "are jehovahs witnesses a sect or a cult?
the last sentence of the first paragraph says "they do not look to any human, but rather to jesus christ, as their leader.".
if an active witness were to make this exact statement to an elder, he or she would throw up a red flag!

This statement is made for a witness to read or discuss with someone who is asking if the Witnesses are a cult. By only sharing this info they are misleading people. In fact, in the 2 paragraphs under this heading the organization isnt even mentioned!
The second paragraph gos on to say that "They neither follow a human nor isolate themselves from the rest of society.

unreasonable to expect the JW's to fix everyones houses!
by PaNiCAtTaCk inive been twice to hurricane rebuilds.

yes, its true that 98 percent of the people we helped were mostly the jw's.

I didnt realize they were listed somewhere officially as a charity. Thats not honest when they will only fix JW's homes. To be listed as a charity one would think that they could donate to the wt and it go to anyone who needed it. Things are clearer to me now. The reason I insinuated they may be struggling financially is.
- Dropping WT/AWake subscriptions
- Going to all paperback books
- A while back I heard the Presiding Overseer state that they were having to turn there WT sign out now instead of leaving it on all the time because they were hurting financially.

Ive been twice to hurricane rebuilds. I helped with Hurricane Andrew and Maryland. Yes, its true that 98 percent of the people we helped were mostly the JW's. Other than cleaning up the yards of adjacent houses and minor construction we really just helped the JW's. But I guess I dont understand what so many on this board expect the Witnesses or the society to do. The society is struggling financially and cutting costs like most all of the major companies in the United States. Most all of the workers are Janitors and Window washers with a few wealthy witnesses thrown in. I know my parents have given money and supplies to the JW Victims from New Orleans. They live in Arkansas and had a few staying in there congregation. Many got together and helped them giving them money, food and a place to stay. My mom told me yesterday that another group from my old congregation is going this next weekend to help rebuild the brothers homes. What plan of action are you guys suggesting the Society take? Build everyone new houses? Give them 2000 debit cards? Sure the society is helping there own but why is that so wrong? Where do you draw the line? Should they give all there money to the victims and then shut the watchtower down? There main goal is preaching and spreading there version of the truth and they are going to protect that above all. If they are struggling financially to get enough magazines printed because of costs then hurricane funding is going to be limited and especially to those not witnesses. If my family lost everything in a hurricane and I wasnt fortunate enough to have the money of the Catholic church or the Scientologists then i would devert my moneyds to my family. What is the plan the should take?
I do think its misleading to tell people who call or those at the congregation to make checks payable to world wide work. But i do not see anything wrong with taking care of your own people as the Society does. -

If raised JW - or in while young - how strict were your parents?
by Jamelle ini'm just curious to know where my parents register on the scale of strictness...
growing up, i felt absolutely smothered by my parents (mostly my mother).
the things i couldn't do were above and beyond the limitations put on the other young people in our hall.

- I remember helping my mom and sister destroy her "Another one bites the dust" CD by Queen after backmasking was mentioned at the bookstudy.
- I went to a trade show with my dad in Memphis TN to look at new merchandise for the family business and being asked to preview a new cartoon that might be aired on TV. I was interviewed by a couple of people afterward and of course I loved it. It ended up being very successful. You may have heard of it, its called SMURFS! About 6 years later I was having to throw away my Smurf Village after they were called blue devils and a demon story was told at the Hot Springs AR, convention.
- I would get in big trouble for saying Gosh or anything like that so me and my friends starting saying DOG. So if something went wrong I would just say Oh DOG. It was quickly pointed out that DOG is God spelled backwards and that it was just as bad!
- I remember having to leave the drive in Theatre because Ghostbusters got to bad for us to watch. We didnt know it was on that night or we would have never make the 20 mile drive and attempted to watch it.
- When I had sleep overs we always had to go in service even if we stayed up till 6 in the morning, which we always did.
- No spiderman Cartoons or Scooby doo ghost cartoons.
- My worldly Grandma would call us and tell us to come get our Christmas present every year. My mom would have me call her back and tell her that we couldnt accept it until January.
- We walked out of lots and lots of movies. In fact back in the 80's there were always JW's mentioning how that had to walk out of this movie or that movie. It was like they were going to movies just so they could walk out and tell everyone.
- I remember when I was ten my parents getting a sheparding call. My mom and dad told me to go outside and play but the Elders quickly said that it would be good if I stayed to hear them. They were giving us a sheparding call because my Moms hours had slipped below the national average and they were going to remove her from playing the piano at the congregation as she had done for years and years and years. My parents are self imployed and they were having to work Saturdays and long hours. So after that we made Sunday our service day after the meeting. That was the first time I remember seeing my Mom Cry and she did it right in front of the two Elders and my Dad.

Have I been red flagged?
by searching4? ini find it very weird that in 13 years, not one jw has come knocking on my door.
i don't live in my home town and have had no contact with witnesses ( besides my mom) since i was disfellowshipped in 1992. is it possible that my mom ( still a witness) has alerted the local kingdom hall and had me placed on the " do not call" list?
or maybe i just live in the area of slacker witnesses?

This could be a great test! Pray to Jehovah and ask him to have those of the 1 true religion come to you and see if the JW's show up! Then you will know if its the truth or not :)

leaving
by Lo-ru-hamah into those of you that have been jw's for many years... i would like to know how it is that you have transferred to your new life.
my family and i are in the process, actually, we have left because of many of the issues brought up on this forum.
this, being jw's, is all that we have ever known.

Glad to have you guys here!!! Myself and the family are about 6 or 7 months ahead of you guys and things have really gotten better for us. Finally seperating from meeting and service completely really helped break the control. Only then can you see the subtle mind control techniques they use. Another thing you need to do is READ, READ, READ. Read this forum and read cult related books to see for yourself if the JW's are in fact a CULT. Also see both sides of every issue, something that as witnesses you were never allowed to do! You dont have to stop believing in Jehovah or Christ Jesus. I am not a Born again like some have turned. As a family we simply read and interpret for ourselves, not allowing any man to tell us " you must believe this way or that way!" I encourage you to read Crisis of Conscience if you havent yet. Also "Combatting cult mind control" written by a former moonie will really help you. And its not even apostate reading.
