Musings of a Proud Dad

let me tell you a story.

i have a wonderful 18 year old son who is almost as smart as he thinks he is.

he is currently a freshman at northeastern university in boston, in their engineering program.

Aww Chuck! What a proud dad you are and you have reason to be! Good for your son. And good for you to be wise about your initial reaction. You sound like a great dad!

You may have already done this, but tell your son you're proud of him. I know there have been times in my life that Dad was proud of me, but he never told me. I grew up thinking he didn't care. I've since found out from other people that Dad was proud of me on several occasions because he told them so. But he has yet to tell me. Of course, now that I'm DFed he'll never say anything good to me.

So take the time to tell your son 'thank you' and 'I'm proud of you'...I can guarantee it - he NEEDS and WANTS to hear it!

Having been told by few people that, in person, I am intimidating, I quite frankly think it is a plus. Perhaps, I lost out on knowing some nice guys, however, the jerk morons of the world would also stay clear of me too.

I've also been told I'm intimidating. Like I said earlier, why I have no idea - I'm still little ol' Andi. But I like your perspective. I'll try to remember this! You're a sweetie too!

I don't know, I couldn't live with a women who didn't think for herself. I love the fact that my wife can give me a dressing down when I'm being an ass. I love the fact that once in a while I can feel like I'm being taken care of.

You're one in a million sweetie! Humility is such a noble and attractive trait - in anyone, man or woman. You're wife is lucky!

I once had a boyfriend who said he admired me for my independent spirit but wanted me to do what he said. Contradiction!

This is so my father! He would "say" he admired (as a child) my independent spirit. But then he did everything he could to break it. A total contradiction. So sad!

Love is a Foreign Language to JWS

Awww! You're sweet to say that. I can't speak for Meta, but I do know that I agree with your analogy - it is the trials in my life that have strengthened me and given me character. It is also through those trials that I learned to NOT be judgemental and to have a heart of mercy and be compassionate. But know that this new found freedom has come with a price - a steep one at that. But if I could go back and change anything would I do it? Absolutely not! The price of truth and freedom for ANYTHING will be steep - whether we speak of religion, politics, freedom, or anything else of importance.

All I can say is keep an open mind and heart - those qualities attract like minded people and with their help you'll heal. I was surprised at the amount of kindness and compassion I received from my "worldly" friends. I truly hope you have some like that as well. If not, stick around this board. There are many people here that want to help people like us. I've actually just realized as I'm typing this, that helping others by listening, (((ehugs))), and sharing is just as important to my own healing. I'm glad it can help others, but it benefits me as well. You'll get there one day too!

What did you do to free your mind from WBTS??

i ask you this because i saw a lot of hypocrisy in the org but i still have sometime this old fear of armageddon with a feeling a culpability.

should i do some research on my own about all the lies of the wbts?

what did you do to find a goal in your life?

What I did to free my mind from JW thinking? I did seveal things:

1. Sought professional counseling.
2. Found some new friends taught me how to think for myself. I'd never done that before.
3. Found some new personal interests and pursued them. I learned I loved sports!
4. I was gentle to myself. I realized that 19 years of cult brainwashing wasn't going to come undone in just a few months or even just a few years.
5. Kept an open mind. I listened to other beliefs just to see what was out there. I then used the buffet of ideas to come to my own conclusions.

Update on my step son New Info

sean went to mass with me again on sunday.

he knelt during the consecration of eucharist and said the lord's prayer with us.

does this make him an automatic da?.

I said nothing to him at all, when I kneeled he knelt.

My only concern is that he is following you just to follow you. Perhaps because he knows he wants to fit in or please you? Just a thought. I guess I say this because when I've been to Catholic mass, it made me feel very uncomfortable when I didn't know what "to do" and "when to do it". I followed others out of my comfort level...not because I accepted the Catholic beliefs.

I'm with you. I dress up way more now that I'm outa the dubs. If I have appointments with customers I'm required by company dress code to wear a suit, hose, and heels. The only other difference between my wardrobe now versus my wardrobe then is that now my clothes have taste! I see pictures of when I was a dub and ARRRGGGHHH! Same with my JW family. Both my parents and brothers are a good looking family. But their taste in dress clothes is atrocious! Did we all have that bad of taste in clothing or was it just in my family? LOL Actually I remember brothers in the hall dressing nicely and tastefully and it was considered "weak", "trendy", or even "worldly"! Haha! Okay - that's me today...I just consider myself to having "taste".

I'm a member of an actual JW discussion board on Yahoo. It amazes me to see how many spineless sisters there are there!!! And it amazes me still when a confident outspoken sister is put down by the brothers on the board. The whole "submissive woman is a holy woman" drives me nuts! As if thinking for oneself is a crime. Wait a second...to them it is. Nevermind...

I do consider myself a strong person. I don't always feel confident or courageous, I often times feel fearful, but I think that's natural. To me courage is mastering your fear and using it for good. If a woman (or anyone for that matter!) has the courage to speak out their opinion, especially in the face of disagreement, then I find that extremely attractive. I used to hate it when my ex had NO OPINION on anything. Didn't ever voice his thoughts on anything of consequential matters. I remember wondering, "Do you have a brain in there? Do you have an opinion? Or are you scared to voice it?" Come to find out, voicing his opinion scared him because he was afraid I'd disagree with him. But now I think, "Who cares if I disagree with you? Disagreeing doesn't mean I don't love you or won't like you anymore." I guess I am TOTALLY turned off by a spineless man and just think men would have the same viewpoint about a spineless woman.
