As dull as they are in their own capacity for asking meaningful questions about the Watchtower, active JWs have an uncanny ability to detect if a prospective "Bible study" has that capacity.

thinking of having a bible study
by Ellie inwhat do you think would happen if someone where to have a bible study with the sole purpose of asking lots of awkward questions just to get the reaction of the witnesses?

The DFing of Sister M
by Bonnie_Clyde inthis is a true story although it happened many years ago.
in the early 1960's, the wife of our po (then called congregation servant) studied with a very sweet old lady in her eighties.
this lady loved her bible and truly loved god.

Perhaps this old lady got the best of both worlds: Would she have befriended the JWs if she did not have her own active support network at that time? Probably not. Sounds like the JWs provided her with company and support. So, she got companionship in the last few years of her life, at least up until she went into a nursing home. And, she was "able" to revert to her earlier beliefs (as another poster said, oftentimes older adults do this). May be she was more resourceful than you've given her credit.
I'm still surprised that she was disfellowshiped though back in 1965. I wonder if the same thing would happen in 2005?

Which world power was the penis? The DONG dynasty?
No,no,no! It was neither the Dong dynasty nor the Ding Dong dynasty. A close inspection of history shows that it was the Cockadians, that fine race of firm, upright beings who were ever prepared to thrust themselves into tight places but who were undone by lack of requisite armour, acquiring all sorts of slings and arrows and dying out in the process.

Generation of 1914 gone!
by Gill inis the generation that saw 1914, now dead and gone?.
if they were born in 1900, they'd be 105 now and there are not many of these people left.. if they were born in 1914 they'd be 91 and there are not many of these left either.. can we say that the early light of russell and rutherford, and nathor knowrr is well and truly disproved?.
can we say it's just a matter of time before the new light is also disproved?.

That's because dubs attract people who are convinced the world is going to hell in a handbasket and are looking for easy answers to difficult questions about why life is the way it is and (some) people are so damned obnoxious, cruel or evil.
Right on willyloman! It's a mentality that says, the world's doomed and we desperately need to identify then cling to the right group to survive. So, the need for truth is linked directly to anxiety and desperation rather than a calm dispassionate interest in how the overall picture adds up. Desperate people believe desperate things...and they overlook a lot of contradictions, half-truths and straight out lies in the process.

The WTS needs to close ranks.
That's the story of the religion since at least Rutherford's reign: Periodic robotic purging. Sorry to hear you're on the receiving end of the latest batch. Stay firm and resolute!

I like the way your overview highlights the frequency with which the article talks about survival "as a group" through the great tribulation. How it illustrates the way in which the typical JW grew up or joined the religion thinknig they would never grow old and die. Normal reality - which nonJWs deal with everyday - can be a shock to the JW.

Opinions on 'Watch the Tower' Website
by love2Bworldly in.
i never see any references by anyone to paul blizzard's website, watch the tower.
i was wondering what people think of him?
-
steve2
He's somewhat into "urgency", as if he's swapped zeal for the watchtower for zeal with another message that evokes the same everyone's-gotta-be-told-the-message thinking. Bor-ing.

Young man....young man?!?!
by logansrun inwhen is a man no longer a "young man"?
i, for instance, am twenty-eight years old (ignore the avatar) and am still called "young man" to this day, by both people i"ve met in person as well as on this message board.
is it really my age?

You must be short. Sadly, short men are afflicted with two burdens in life: Being patted on the head and being called "young man". The only solution is gaining at least six to eight inches in height. Suddenly, you're no longer short, patted on the head or called "young man". Yes, I know: It is a very unfair world.

Thanks Alan for yuor firsthand account of meeting with the editor-in-chief. Very insightful. To think we looked up to these men. When all is said and done, they're really just like everyone else. It's their stuffy, hypocritical and arrogant claims to the contrary that make them stand out as truly reprehensible.
