last night a member of the seventh-day adventist faith knocked on my door and offered my literature.
this is the first time that's every happened.. his approach was similar to the jw's.
--he tried to talk of topics of common interest and work that into a presentation for his literature without actually saying who he was affliliated with.

To be fair, Elizabethan English was well out of vogue by the time Smith translated.
There is something bizarre in the fact that the chapters are identical down to the numbering structure. The numbering structure did not arise from any translation process but only as referential points, added later. It is too bizarre to chalk up to chance. The numbering system itself was added to the English Bible well after Nephi's time.

To add one brief amendment to those thoughts, according to their published standards for Christians (in the books Organized to Accomplish Our Ministry and Organized to Do Jehovah's Will) it is clear that whether there were Criteria for Association or not, it is an act of deliberate Disassociation to join those disapproved by God. The Scriptures used are Isaiah 2:4 and Revelation 19:17-21.
The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc. joined the advocate and mouthpiece of the UN, the UN/DPI. Is the UN/DPI an organization under judgment by God? According to the Organization, yes. But they do not hold themselves to the same standards they hold others to.
Romans 2:1-2 — Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are, if you judge; for in the thing in which you judge another, you condemn yourself, inasmuch as you that judge practice the same things. Now we know that the judgment of God is, in accord with truth, against those who practice such things.
"Whoever you are" says it all.

I recommend not debating. Tell her you are having trouble proving certain doctrines and that in attempting to prove them you have lost confidence in the Organization. Invite her help.
Then, let her prove Daniel 4 has any connection whatsoever to 1914 to you. Reassure her that you don't want to argue, etc. But as she goes, ask her things like, "Now, if I don't agree with some conclusion you draw, you aren't going to think that means I'm fighting, right?"

with all the discussion here about the dangers of religion, its morality issues, and so on i thought it would be interesting to have a discussion (especially given the large population of science oriented folks on this board) where we discuss the same issues with respect to science.
now this is not meant to be some i want to go back to the dark ages thread, but more so that recognition that there are moral, ethical, and hell survival issues with science that need to be addressed.. michael crichton as most know is both a famous author and an extremely bright individual who attended harvard medical school, in his novel jurrassic park he raised some issues with science and its dangers: .
