  Definition of an "Apostate"?

  what are the ancient words translated into english "apostate", from da bible?

  and what are their actual definitions and compare this to the wts definitions?

  i'm sure there will be some discrepencies.

  the definition contained at the bottom of the post from "fairchild" nicely illustrates the murkiness surrounding this word. the greek word "apostasia", a later form of the root word "apostasis" appears twice in the new testament, and denotes not a kind of person, nor an act of doing something, but rather a kind af condition, namely that of having been seperated from a thing (a belief, political party etc.), and of now standing, settled, away from it.
  

  this word ought not neccessarily to be a pejorative term, but we might reflect that the word is often used as an slur - and always has been, unfortunately.

  What is a disfellowshipping offense?

  i had a brief discussion with my wife about the practice of shunning and i asked her if the act of associating with a df'ed or "apostate" individual would get someone disfellowshipped.

  she denied that it would, saying that it was not included among the specific "disfellowshipping offenses" listed in the bible.

  yet my understanding is that there are many things that can get a jw disfellowshipped which aren't among the immoral practices specifically listed by paul in that context.

  for if you love those loving you, what reward do you have?

  are not also the tax collectors doing the same thing?

  invite them to read the bible - no "help" from anybody, no quack interpretations, just a bible, and a couple of maps to help with the place names. they might realize how wide of the mark the dubs are.

  guys,

  i think a deep breath, and the taking of a few steps back to in order to survey a bigger picture, would be well advised. yes our hearts rejoice to see impediments placed in front of the jws. but there is much more to this picture than that.

  russia has a long and (for tens of millions of its own people*) sad history. this is in some measure attributable to the self serving & totalitarian "leaders" according to whose matchless wisdoms its people have been governed (remind you of anyone?).

  mr putin, it seems, is taking his country back to the bad old days. russia is not becoming more free, it is becoming less so. mr putin is creating headaches for people inside his country - witness for instance the treatment meted out to the channel one, rtr & ntv media outlets - and for people outside it - witness the recent goings on in the ukraine.

  jw practices are indeed odious, but the russian state machinery that is presently clamping down on the jws is a very big beast and has in the not too distant past been a very nasty one, and we should think hard about history and present political trends before giving our sanction to its repressive activity.

  do you ever feel nervous or a little guilty talking about "jehovah god" in a negative way?

  nervous? - he dosn't exist, so no.

  guilty - yes but its purely residual guilt - & that will probably never go.

  does it bother me? well, considering him at all bothers me - one wishes he'd just go away. but one can't pretend that he has done whilever innocent kids are being terrorised by his scary image. so one goes on trying to puncture the great myth.

  doesn't that conjure up a thought-provoking question?

  i have heard this phrase a few times and i consider it rather childish and deliberately mysterious, as if jehovah has a bunch of wrapped gifts for each of us, and we curiously wonder what's inside of them.

  i overheard a do say this once, when someone asked him if there would be any new information.

  the point about this question is not that there might or might not be something in store, but rather that whatever there could be, jehovah is directing it. in this way a question arising out of our ignorance of future events, and our vulnerability to them, is turned into a (yet another) tool for abolishing uncertainty (always a dangerous thing), and replacing that uncertainty with a doctrine - namely the one that jehovah is running the show, it's all in hand, & we don't have to worry, thereby relegating us from the dizzy heights of doubt, to thoughtless certainty.

  3 year old nephew has "bad dreams about Jehovah punishing him"

  we watched my 3 year old nephew today.

  the wife and i took him and my two daughters (1 and 3) too the zoo.

  while we were driving home he was talking to my daughter in the back seat and started telling her about this "bad dream" that jehovah was punishing him "like david" my wife (dubber) was trying really hard to get him to stop relating this story (i've told her the kids will not be raised at witlesses!

  oh yeah? what book is that called? i will get a copy. i just got a copy of "from paradise lost to paradise regained" from an amazon zbookshop (or whatever those websellers on amazon's webpages are called), and i just can't believe my mum & dad could fall for that stuff, and visited it on me & my brothers.
