Do you think the JWs are more extreme than the Mormons?
by Qcmbr ini'm just feeling a little naughty today - i'm just kinda interested in your views.

I have a great aunt that is a very devout Mormon. I have nothing but respect for her. She is happy, kind, generous and well adjusted. But her beliefs are crazy as hell.

My Mum won't give up...
by Mastodon inmy wife called me earlier today and told me that my mom just sent us an invitation to the memorial on the mail.
she still hopes that i'm going through a 'rebellious phase' and that i will someday join her dubby brothers again.
she will probably come to san antonio in late may to visit my brother and i know that when we see each other face to face we will have a long-awaited and dreaded conversation; starting with my piercings and my tattoo all the way to the real reasons why i decided to leave the dubs.

My mom cracks me up. I was at her house on Sunday for a little family BBQ. My boyfriend was not able to go. SO my mom says "If D was here, it'd be the whole family" Sooo...she's fairly accepting of me and my gay life...yet she also insists on inviting me to memorial and convention and occasionally reminding me that I need to "get right with Jehovah"
Basically...My mom will alwys act like a mom...loving me too much to disown me, but being too motherly to just let me lead my life without her little comments and interference.

What time do meetings start?
by Qcmbr indo all jw churches have a set pattern and timing of meetings?
what meetings are available for heathens mormons to attend?
i feel like i should go to the theocratic thingy:)

Depends a lot on your area. Here in Oklahoma 10:00 is pretty standard for sundays, but a few, very few, still have 930. With the evening meetings starting at 730. Most congs here also have a book study at 10am on Saturdays

I've decided to disassociate myself tonight
by Dustin inthe kingdom hall where i used to go has the theocratic ministry school and service meetings on tuesday.
i have finally come to grips with my need to exit the jehovah's witnesses forever.
i told my parents today that i'm leaving the jw religion behind forever.

Good luck, Dustin. It's a really big step and I'm sure you'll be a lot happier!

Your JW Family: Reason With or `Live' With ?
by Jodo inpersonally, i've kept my thoughts on the "religion" to myself since i faded for fear of shunning.
now i'm starting to turn the other way and am considering taking some risks by talking doctrinal issues when occasions arise, but limiting myself to commenting on matters only on their instigation.
to me at least, that seems less confrontational......and most witnesses can't resist trying to encourage family members back to the fold, which means plenty of opportunities present themselves anyway.. what about you?
-
ValiantBoy
Depends on the family member. With my Grandmother and a few other really unreasonables, I just don't bring it up--it would only end up being a big nasty fight. With my mom, it depends on her mood. We usually don't discuss doctrine much because I don't have a problem with her keeping a lot of Witness beliefs--new world, 144000, no trinity, bible is the inerrant word of god, etc. We do sometimes discuss practices--child abuse policy, hypocrisy in her local congregation etc. Even then, I try to just bring it up---then let her do most of the talking. She'll usually realize the point I'm making on her own.
Also, I don't hate witnesses. I disagree with them. I am still of the belief that if someone wants to be a witness, if it brings fulfillment to their life, if it makes them happy--than they should be a witness. There are a lot of Witnesses I know-not the majority, but a lot- that are good and sincere and happy being witnesses.

Another group sues ex-members over website
by DocBob inafter i posted a news item on my website about charges in a lawsuit against rick ross being dropped in federal court, a couple who is still involved in the lawsuit contacted me.
they are jim bergin and judy garvey.
as i read their site, especially jim's article a husband's perspective , i could not help but be stuck by the similarities between many of their experiences and ours.

This is so mind boggling to me--- churches have the right to shun and denounce individuals, but when individuals shun and denounce a church, they can be challenged in court. just mind boggling.

Man kills seven, himself at church service -- beliefs identical to WTS
by YellowLab inback on march 12th, a 44-year old man in wisconsin walked into a church service and shot & killed seven members, including himself.
the story had made national news.
the article below from the milwaukee journal/sentinel specifically talks about the church he was involved in, namely the worldwide church of god.. my reason for posting this article is this church's striking resemblance to the wts teachings.
-

Back when I was still leaving the truth, I worked with a girl who was in the process of leaving the Worldwide Church of God. We were surprised at the similarities...although there were a few diffences as well.
An older sister to whom I was very close many years ago told me that Armstrong did indeed "borrow" many witness teachings. I do not know the source of her information, but I alwys considered her very trustworthy. She was one of those people who was not just a good witness, but also a good person.

Is this maybe up to each local cong? I recall us skipping a meeting when it fell on meeting night. Sometimes, we'd just split the meeting up over two weeks, but I recall once when we just skipped a bookstudy.
