I have found it hard to make friends outside of the JW life. I have lots of acquaintances but not close friends. Not someone I'd trust like a close friend. Undercover. I feel the same way. It has taken me 10 yrs to finally develop some realationships outside of my husband, that I would consider close. Still not true friends or 'bosum buddies'. hg

I had a few close friends that sometimes I still miss. I mean I grew up with these people, they were all I knew. The only friends I'd had, I felt very alone after I left, not being able to talk to them. Very hurt also that they wouldn't have anything to do with me. I have new friends now, even ones that I've made on here 'Dustin'. I can't really blame them for not staying in contact though. They aren't brave enough or ready to make that next step to go agaisnt the WTS. So maybe someday they'll see the light. hg

JWs and Clothing
by the_classicist inwhere i live, its not usual for people to "dress up," especially business people and executives, you are more likely to see them with a button up shirt, khakis, and one of those fleece vests on.
so, on the whole, jws look very out of place wearing their cheap suits (though a few elders didn't wear cheap suits and they made that known, "look at this, i got a spot on my new $200 designer shirt" -- really, something like this happened).
but what i did notice is that, in my area, dressing guidelines usually weren't followed, or enforced for that matter, for good looking women.

I was always amazed at the level of strictness of the dress code depending on each cong. In central WI it wasn't as strict, we got away with knee length, makeup, and trendy hairstyles. Of course I didn't, elders daughter, had to set an exmaple!!! Then when I moved to a cong in Chicago, man it was anything goes. It was great, and at the assemblies down there, both guys and girls dressed the part to pick up each other, and no one thought anything of it. But then when I moved to northern WI watchout! Floor length skirts only, nothing trendy, no makeup or as little as possible. And because it's cold up here for service you had to dress like an Eskimo, and only stuff from the 2nd hand stores. God forbid you actually have a nice formfitting warm coat! But no pants for us sisters when it was below zero out in field service. Gotta love their stupidity. hg

The gossip among the JW's is terrible. Three years after I had been df'd, my dad an elder called to tell me that another elder in a former cong of mine let him know that I was a reason for someone else's df'ing. This other person that was df'd I hadn't spoken to or seen in about 5 yrs, back when I was still a goodie two shoe JW. So not sure how I could've been the reason, but hey anyone I can help out, right? But what right did that elder have calling my dad who isn't even in the same cong, to tell him this? Obviously nothing is confidential. I also found out that when I was df'd, they announced it in every cong I'd ever attended. Good grief, like they wouldn't figure it out anyway. hg

favourite games to play as a child during boring meetings
by Surfacing inmy parents were both very strict, and i wasn't allowed any toys at the hall.
my rations included a copy of my book of bible stories, and a pen and note pad.
my parents were strict to the point of not allowing me to draw pictures, i had to "take notes".

I used to daydream that we'd have a bomb threat so that the meeting would be cancelled. And during conventions, I always sat close to where the sign langauge translater was, had much more fun trying to figure what hand signs went with what words. Plus my best friend and I learned enough that we could discreetly sign to each other across the aisle. Passed the time! Hg

I have to agree with Jez, make them come to you. I waited for 9 yrs. and one night at 2am my oldest brother showed up at my door, just to talk. He comes over once a week to spend time with me and my family. He's still JW, but a fence sitter, and he doesn't let my other brothers or my parents know that he comes to my house. Now I'm just waiting for my other brothers and my mom to come around. I have no hope for my dad. He's a self righteous elder, tryannical, etc... So Jaredg, be careful not to play to their rules too much, you might end up sacrificing your principals. hg

hey... 16 years of the same 212 songs... eventually they get stuck in your head! That's not funny! Every once in a while, I catch myself humming a Kingdom Melody. And at first I can't figure out what it is, and then OMG, I realize what I'm humming. They sure do a good job of brainwashing.

To all those still lurking,,, this is the best website to get support from ever! For the longest time I felt very alone in the world with the experience I had gone through, but so many on this understand and have gone through the same stuff, it's very comforting.

sorry, International Break Time. 10:30 am every Sat during field service. If we didn't have any serious JW's in our group, we made it last til noon, just talking and eating! The best part of having to endure Sat mornings without cartoons!
