we did have Prohibition in America in 1920 where for over 10 years you could not legally buy and drink alcohol

Which didnt stop the FDS smuggling in booze for Rutherford across the Canadian border. The FDS even changed its understanding of Romans 13 so it could deny the teaching of subjection to earthly authorites. Then they could defend their breaking of prohibition laws, with a clear(ish) conscience.

But just think of how many faithful witnesses languished in prisons around the world for the alternative service doctrine, linked to that Romans 13 new light, until it was changed back decades later. Good people in proison for years as a result of Rutherford opposing prohibition due to his alcoholism. Very sad.

one of my biggest pet peeves at the k.h.

was when i would see those not in the right clique get forgotten.

so easily they would slip between the cracks.

Excellent posts which make us THINK. You guys express a lot of how I feel/think, but express it so much more coherently. I would just add that I often learn the most from those with whom I disagree, but it can take longer, and tends to work more on the subconcious.

The only thing I'm uncomfortable with is the JW-style eagerness to classify people

I divide the posters into two distinct groups.

I know aht you mean, but there are probably about six billion classes and growing. That is six billion, less about six million.

do you believe the society will just stay on automatic pilot or do you think some "new lite" is in store for witnesses?

remove the "2 witness" requirement for reporting crimes like molestation

...and insist that two-thirds of the Governing Body must witness the act...

i don't think that jesus pested people, and i don't think he had to be dressed better or differently from those he preached to.. .

Who here gives to the homeless?

i'm interested in how many here give to the homeless, or any kind of charity, since that was not a part of the witness experience.

i have to admit that my heart is hard ...

Its unwise to put all 'homeless' people into a single 'box'. They are all individuals just like any other people in the world. Some are genuine and needy, while others are not.

I would rather give my packed lunch than cash that might be spent on booze by an alcoholic. Some are mentally ill...I usually prefer to give to organisations helping these folks, rather than to an individual on the street.

But most importantly, I have no time for the all too common negative rhetoric about how it sopposedly does no good... I feel that's just an excuse to be selfish and not feel guilty about it.

Its a great movie, I want to watch it again, this time with my 15 year old son, I think a newer (uncut) version may be out now....off to blockbuster...

So, why would a creator let atrocities go by unpunished?

I agree with JH feelings on the matter, but I try to keep asking questions, like:

1. Who says atrocities will go unpunished?

2. Why would a creator of unlimitless love have any interest whatsoever in punishment? Perhaps God has other ways?

I consider myself a Christian, BUT if God were anything like JWs and conservative Christians believe, which is a relatively modern and erroneous theology, then I would deny such a God, unreservedly.

A god who requires me to believe in him and love him under threat of annihilation...a God who reserves salvation only for those who follow some strange laws and rules, some of which conflict with the royal law of love...a God who says women should submit to men, or who loves straight people more than homosexuals...a God who says only Christians can be saved........ is NOT the God revealed through Jesus Christ in the Bible.

If God or Jehovah were any of these things....and if I believed as some Christians do that this is what the Bible actually teaches, then I reject Jehovah with all my being.

That's a good question.

Imagine if he had been born into our time. There is no way he would have had anything but the harshest of words for the legalistic religions like JWs.
