  Strong suggestion that paradise is not heaven but a holding place between the resurrection and death. A place where the preaching work continues? If the preaching continues then what of earthly ordinances?

  Yeah! thats what I was getting at! The interesting point was that Jesus preached to those killed in the days of Noah. And our prayers can help those who have already died...

  But this is old Christian teaching, apparently lost in many religions today (Except LDS & Catholic it would seem? Gotta go to bed too,

  Jaffa:Whilst I agree that various sacraments are useful as strengthening "means of grace", they are not IMHO the basis of salvation. Otherwise you're gonna have to condemn the thief, which Jesus didn't...

  I agree, that these are not the basis of salvation, and I agree with your point about the thief (although I don't necessarily believe paradise meant heaven - but a step in that direction). I didnt include the sacraments, the virgin birth, the verbal inerrancy of scripture etc in my suggested list of fundamentals to Christianity. I don't consider myself orthodox, but like Jgnat says, there is a far stronger scriptural case for othodoxy than any of the johhny come lately attempts to reinterpret scripture and claim to be the only true religion. To answer the point about helping hurracane victims, I believe many athiests will attain salvation, and I believe there is scriptural support for such a belief.

  You mentioned doing the word of God. But don't you agree that is the problem, none of us agree on what God's word is. You give me one statement from the Bible and it could arguably be interpreted differently by each reader.

  did you know that all these hurricanes and tsunamis are a "sign" that we're in "the time of the end"?

  almost anything that happens is "proof" that we're "living in the last days".

  when george bush sr. talked about a "new world order", in the 80's, that too was a "sign".

  - do you accept a sabbath, baptism, need for prayer etc..? Just interested. When do we cease to be Christian and move to free love floating - is there a bare minimum required to be Christian.

  Whilst I agree with LT's summary, I am very unhippyish. I believe in sacrements like baptism, need for prayer etc. However I reject unbiblical notions taught by fundamentalist religions such as the verbal inerrancy of scripture, or how they select one relatively modern theory of atonement and impose it on others. I am unsure about some other fundie teachings, but the point I would make is that they have no firm scriptural basis for claiming certain doctrines as being fundamental to Christian faith. Just my two-penneth.

  I think the list that started this thread is pretty good, although I like LT's suggested shortening.

  On the other hand, fundamentalists select such a strange list of beliefs and claim they are the fundamentals of Christian faith? What is really fundamental to Christian faith? I like a version I read by a theologian I respect:

  • existence of a creator God
  • revelation of the unlimited love of God shown in the life and death of his Son
  • the hope that all might share in the redemption of the world accomplished by God, in and through Jesus Christ & the power of the Spirit

  I believe LT has understood the real message underlying all scripture. Christ himself summarised 'the law and the prophets' in exactly the same way.

  Did Rutherford, Knorr or Franz have any kids?

  does anybody know if any of these 3 had children?

  if so, did they remain in the wts and gain any positions of influence?.

  i always thought the wts had very little regard for children, not just the fact that they expect the dubs to sacrifice their childrens lives over the blood issue, but even the designs of the kingdom halls, no rooms or activities for children, just forced indoctrination.. could this stance be the result of a series of presidents who had no understanding or care for children themselves?

  Franz never livesd a normal life, but was cocooned for many decades. Unlike his nephew Ray, who was a missionary abroad and preached door to door (rare for a Governing Body member). Ray describes Uncle Fred as other worldly and completely out of touch for someone making decisions on practicalities and morals of R&F witnesses.

  Fred never had to go get a job & work for a living. Just traveled 1st class & stayed in good hotels.

  I understand Knorr broke ranks and married at a time when marriage was discouraged as folks had to save that for the new system. I believe several followed his lead - must have been lack of faith!

  just to let you know, the recent storms in the gulf coast of the southern us are well known in iraq.

  in fact, mosque messages in town are saying that the storms are punishment from god for the occupation of iraq.

  Who or what was God punishing 250 million years ago, when natural events on a much bigger scale destroyed 90% of the planet's marine life and about 70% of terrestrial life? That was way before the Ten Commandments...

  And what about the similar events most years in parts of the world in which the west shows little interest? These are more regular and more seious than what happens in the USA, but who in the west cares?

  And what about the terrible earthquakes in Iran and elsewhere in recent years? God punishing both sides - give me a break!
