I used to wonder about this too and the thought crossed my mind that if they believe what they told us to believe, don't you think the halls should have a supply of cots or sleeping bags and other survival equipment for when the end comes?

Did U ever wonder - if the end was so close - why were we building Kh's?
by AK - Jeff ini always wondered why we were not spending the money to build halls in remote and poor areas that needed them - but instead we would build new halls and sell old ones in places where we were seeing little growth.. every congregation in this area has built a new hall in the past 20 or so years.
yet the congs are the same basic size they were before.
most have had a least one major remodel since building new.

Elder keeping real reason priveledges taken away from own daughter.
by wordlywife inmy step daughter had her pioneer priveledges taken away from her.
the elders involved did not tell my husband what the real reason was for it.
she had done something months prior and that is what elder discussed with him, but that wasn't the real reason, something else happened to make them remove her priveldges, which i won't go into here.

Examples of JW evasiveness/dishonesty
by BONEZZ inbeing born and bred into the borg i always felt it was the "truth" but i wasn't the one who measured up i was not good enough to be a dub.
but i also had nagging questions that went unanswered by the most learned elders...or at least not answered to my satisfaction.
their "answers" were in fact not really answers but side-steps or attempts to mis-direct my question into an area they could answer.. an example...it always bothered me that we could not examine the contents of what opposers put out.

Boneez:
I like your expression "non-answer" because I use it myself. They are the masters of the non-answer and to put a further twist on the non-answer they will say that they don't have to answer someone who doesn't have the "right attitude" (whatever that means). -

What are some of the "Get rich quick businesses" the witnesses tried?
by mjarka911 ini remember many witness businesses that would pop up.
usually they would say "i'll just offer it to the friends to get started, then when it takes off i can pioneer".
it was usually one after the other for the same people.

I am familiar with all the things mentioned in your posts.
These things got to be so out of hand in the 1980s that it was forbidden to mention them in the hall which I totally understood. They also forbade the use of the bulletin board for any such business.
The worst thing though that I heard about was "brothers" getting into the financial advisor business and losing, mishandling (or worse) other people's money.
I heard of at least three horrible experiences about this. -

I will not share a meal with you but can you give me some money
by tyler m ini had to come here and post about this.
my parents who have dutifully shunned me for nearly 9 years had the nerve to ask me for money.
it wasn't for food, a car payment, house payment or anything like that.

Tyler:
I am sorry and outraged to read about your experience with your parents. You have done the right thing to tell them never to ask you for money again as long as they adhere to their ridiculous belief - especially for a reason such as this. (You might have compassion if they were starving though).
Along these same lines, dubs feel that they can ignore, shun or whatever and feel that you will help them if they are in need.
This blows my mind!!! I wonder where all their "spiritual" friends are that they need to bother someone who is out - and imagine that that person should help them.
(JW LURKERS I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS!) - do you expect a person who you ignore/shun for whatever reason to help you when your so-called spiritual friends are not around?? I sincerely hope not.

If you won the Lottery big time, would you be happier?
by Rod P inhow many of us imagine winning the big one, and all our problems in life would be solved.
we could get whatever we wanted without worrying about money, could buy our way out of almost any situation (like the rich folks do), go on any vacation anywhere in the world, dress to the nines on a daily basis, and use our wealth to get others to do our bidding.. money = sex, power, influence, decadent luxury = happiness???.

I think I would be happier.
But I would not like the fact that the leeches would crawl out of the woodwork looking for handouts. Why, even the dubs would come crawling around! Even the stuck up ones who didn't say hello would find a reason to seek me out! -

Witnesses and Inverse Philosophies
by IP_SEC injehovah's witnesses get some pretty ridiculous counsel from hq.
i'm talking about counsel in areas that should be second nature.
part of the problem is that witnesses believe a person must cultivate the fruitage of the spirit.
-

IP_SEC:
You are right about them causing their own problems. But also they enable problems that already exist. Let me explain: I have known dubs who were very dysfunctional - bad backgrounds - who had very bad habits and poor living skills. These people were a nuisance to be around and you had to be careful how you spoke to them. One such person when counseled by another dub about something annoying they were doing responded: "if you have love you wouldn't say or notice something like that" or words to that effect. In other words, this person felt they were doing the service so everything is okay. People should overlook certain things.
While I am not blaming them for people being dysfunctional their lack of emphasis on education keeps these persons from bettering themselves.

Recently deleted as elder
by TheListener inwhen we last saw our hero he was..... alright, if you've been keeping up with the saga you know that during the week of april 11 i was deleted from the elder body.
i stepped aside on my own initiative.
you can read that thread for the non-specific generalities of my situation.. so far noone has said a word to me about it at the hall.

My hat is off to you for DAing yourself on the podium. I have fantasies about doing that. Wow! People must have been sitting there with their mouths open!
As far as anybody else who steps down as an elder, don't be offended if people say "oh, he was deleted because of ......" because rumors like that will spring up.
Hopefully, your health will be better because usually men who become elders age rapidly. They all go gray pretty quick!

Mary Magdelene...
by nicholas inthis, as hear-say, has been my understanding that the catholic church at some point in the early centuries disguised st.mary as being an adulterous woman... only to have her sins' reproved from the salvation of the world by y'shua, meshiach.
it's been said that the particular scriptures, in regards to her surfacing as almost bein' stoned to death, about mary magdelene were actually put into the scriptures by the catholic church themselves.... mary magdelene... adulterous woman, saved sinner?
or apostle, misrepresentation of scripture...?

Nicholas:
Did you ever hear of the book The DaVinci Code? It is fiction based around the historical tale that Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus and they had a child. The whole story about the holy grail is really supposed to be about her.
If this were true then the early church fathers told a lie to smear her reputation. I guess we will never know.
