In the beginning they were heavily German American. It has been said that some would make ethnic slurs from time to time and make fun of other ethnic groups.
Real stupid stuff.

The Jehovah's Witnesses Reformation Movement
by Kenneson ini made an interesting find last evening.
i stumbled across a site purporting to be a jehovah's witness reform movement.
while it sees value in jehovah's witnesses, its primary purpose is to reform the governing body.

I don't think I would even be interested if they reform.
I am tired of organized religions. They always need to be kept in check because of abuses that seem to creep in no matter how well-intentioned everybody is. After a while they all turn into something horrible.
They are just a way for certain people to seek prominence and lord it over everybody. -

Why can you not question/double standard
by Ticker ini have been recently reading isocf and am now on the indoctrination chapter.
what always gripes me with the witnesses has been this one simple double standard of theirs.
when you look at a watchtower or any publication of theirs, it has two messages.

This always bothered me too.
On one site I read an explanation given by one of the GB (I forget who) when being questioned in a deposition by authorities over some issue. He said that "changes must come from the top" or words to that effect. In other words, there would be confusion if they came from the "bottom" e.g. from the rank and file. The problem with this is that if changes only come from the top they are bound to be biased because those at the top would be trying to protect themselves and their position. In effect, it would be like the pharisees who were afraid they would lose their place and their nation. I also seem to remember reading he said something else about how it wouldn't matter if a teaching was wrong as long as there was "unity".
So I got two things out of his deposition. One, that changes should only come from the "top"; two, that it doesn't matter if a teaching is wrong, as long as there is "unity". -

Are you Sharing?
by prophecor ini was one, when in, that believed it was the best thing to share your talents with those of the bretheren.
where you a plumber, a carpenter, an auto mechanic?
then it would behoove you to take those skills and give them to the community of your brothers and sisters.

No. I stopped dead in my tracks...
When I realized they didn't want single women around except for favors and to contribute money for whatever.
When I realized they didn't believe in work or education - but thought they should benefit from the fact that you had a job.
When I realized they had a "caste" system. -

Would the WTS torture the "apostates" if they could?
by greendawn indo you think the wts would physically torture and even execute "apostates" if we all lived in a context that allowed them to do so?
much as the catholic church did in the middle ages when they had the opportunity to treat their dissenters as they wished.
already the way the gb wants apopstates treated is as vicious as can be, manifests a deeply seated maliciousness and animosity and is calculated to hurt as much as possible under the present day circumstances.

I could picture some of them actually picking up a stone too. The thing is, I certainly would not be standing still while somebody is trying to hurt me. They are assuming you would not retaliate or they would be the only authority around (assuming everybody else just evaporated) and they would take you into custody with a trial, etc.
Surely none of them would be that stupid today. If they were they just might find their belief in the resurrection to be tested!

JW kids who are currently in college LOVED the convention drama!
by urbanized inhere's a transcript of a post about the 2005 godly obedience convention (which i read about on this board and seemed to highlight a drama in which a biblical story was highly distorted in order to discourage higher education) from a jw youth group on www.myspace.com.

Greendawn:
Those are my points exactly. Nobody is going to support them when they are 40.
If they find themselves down and out some years down the road and are to go and look up brother so-and-so who told them they didn't need a college education and give him a sob story I wonder what kind of reception they would get? -

I am looking for the Pioneer Book
by pr_capone ini cannot find mine and am wanting to give it to a pastor friend of mine.
do any of you 'postates know where i might be able to get my grubby little hands on one?
even an on-line version but i would much rather prefer the real blue book.

The mention of pioneer book brings back a memory.
Years ago when I was active a sister in the hall wouldn't let me pick up and look at her pioneer book. She said: "you have to be a pioneer to see it..." or some such thing. I said: "yeah, okay!"
You could see she was of the mentality that she thought she was special because she was a pioneer.
She belonged to some elite club that I was not a part of and so my eyes could not see the holy words that were only meant for her special eyes. -

Why JW are overweight and unhealthy
by 5thGeneration inwe were told at our convention that "some" brothers and sisters exercise up to an hour or 2 a day.
"some" even join gyms.
then we were told that this would be "self-serving" and a real waste of valuable time better spent on theocratic things.. ouch!.

I have noticed more overweight people in general nowadays.
Some experts think it is because of lack of exercise and super-sizing our portions. This is only part of the problem.
I think it is partly due to three factors: stress, hormones and the quality of our food. The stress screws up our metabolism and the food we sometimes eat is devoid of nutrients and the body craves more (because it's not getting what it needs). (It is going to take a public outcry against manufacturers to change things - already we are wise to trans fats clogging our arteries). The hormone part applies to people nearing mid-life. Your body just does not burn calories the same way.
It is sad that people should be made to feel miserable because they aren't the skinny ideal of hollywood. This isn't reality anyway.
The issue is complicated. -

Excellent article on WT mind control!
by truth_about_the_truth injehovah's witnesses .
if you are one of jehovah's witnesses your mind is being controlled by someone else without your knowledge.
mind control - what is it?.

I am grateful I was only a marginal witness. Hated field service. But I mostly hated studying. I wondered why we constantly had to constantly drill all this into our heads!
Regarding the fact that if you are "out" you are nobody: I have a dub friend who e-mails me from time to time. Whenever I mention any family members of mine she never acknowledges them and I realize she feels that if they are not JWs they are worthless. She feels the same way about her own also. Being a dub makes you so unnatural!!
I promptly delete her e-mails after I read them. -

Fun with Shunners ;)
by damselfly ini used to try and avoid running into jw's after i was first d/f, but the past few years i have taken a different spin on it.
at my old job as a cashier if i was the only cash open then they had no choice but to have me wait on them.
the apprehension on their faces as they approaached was hysterical.

With regard to shunning or DF victims, look at it in a positive way.
It is the dubs who can't speak to you. You can speak to anybody you want in the whole world (if they don't choose to answer - so what?) The problem is really theirs, not yours.
But when you get down to analyzing the whole thing about lost friendships (with the exception of family members) you will realize that it is usually not much of a loss anyway.
