I find it amazing that this is the sort of stuff they were publishing around the same time that Jesus is supposed to have been doing his inspection to see who he should entrust the work to.

Infinite number of oranges and boxes does every box contain an orange?
by Qcmbr infollowing the fun of the recent evolution v designed designer discussion we knocked some ideas about infinity around in the office starting with the above question.. clearly the answer is no but is it?
does infinite then presuppose an infinite universe to contain the infinite oranges and boxes but then how can you have two infinite sets in the same space?
now this is possible if you contain each orange in a box (make the oranges a set within the box - literally!

Beards and bald heads
by parlay inwhat do you think about the wts prohibition on beards?
currently in the us, i think a brother can wear a beard, he just won't be used in the congregation.
i see all references in the wt to beards are in a negative light, such as the supreme court upholding a supermarket chains no beards rule.

What really is scarier - a man who chooses to grow a beard, or a man with no beard because he allows his personal choice to be dictated by someone else and thinks you should submit to this also? I know which one I'm more comfortable opening the door to.

IN YOUR OPINION
by Honesty indoes the watchtower society show the bait and hide the hook when it comes to being open and honest with newly interested ones?.
in other words, do they make themselves appear to have all the answers, the most righteous crowd and the only truth from god until a person is hooked by the 'fear factor' that unless they conform to watchtower doctrines they will surely be destroyed by god at armageddon or, if they decide the jw's are not for them they will never be resurrected should they die before armageddon?.

It's started right at the door when they hide who they're with
And even why they are there. "No of course not, we're not here to convert you. We just wanted to encourage you to look to the Bible..."
I've heard exactly the same thing from Mormons. Funny how everyone who knocks on your door does so purely out of the goodness of their heart, and never for their own personal ends. Even salesmen will deny that they are selling anything - they always just want to offer you a free quote on something.

She still defends the cult and says "I'm trying and that she'll be alright".
"Do, or do not; there is no try."

It seems lots of Christians have a hang-up about it. I just had a look at the Drew Marshall Radio Show website, and by coincidence in the talkback section of the most recent show (September 16) he did a section about masturbation, with the following "dilemma": Real life scenario. A Doctor needs a sperm sample for medical reasons from a teenage boy. Should the boy masturbate or not? As a parent, what's your call? Most of the callers said no!

If masturbation were wrong, then why do men have 'wet dreams'? Let the Watchtower Bible and Crap Society answer that one!
I think they did. I seem to recall something in the "Questions from Readers" section of one magazine where they explained that it was this very thing that makes masturbation unnecessary.

What exactly is the cause of the WTBTS total OBSESSION with masturbation?
They're afraid that making it acceptable will take all the fun out of it.
Is there any religion in the world that has printed so many articles on this topic?
Mormons? Scientologists? Catholics?
Aside from the occasional JW article saying "No, it's not physically harmful and no, the Bible doesn't mention it and no, it's not a sin... BUT YOU STILL NEED HELP TO STOP IT IMMEDIATELY" I can't remember anyone really making a big deal out of it.

I do not know of this show. Is it pure fiction?
No, it's for real - or at least that's how it was presented. Derren Brown is a "mentalist" (hypnotist/magician) who uses various types of psychological trickery to mess with people's heads for the viewer's amusement - making taxi drivers forget where to find a major landmark when it's right in front of them, making everyone in a shopping mall simultaneously raise their hand in the air without knowing why, making a room full of atheists suddenly start believing in God, etc.
The effect would just satisfy the brain with stimulation and make him less likely to disbelieve. Later, he would feel that he did research the material well enough (through only the study itself) and he would not try to do supplimental research.
I think you're right. It also creates the illusion of an open discussion where all sides of the issue were considered and up for debate. We discussed that point, and that was the conclusion we all came to - everyone else's comment was in agreement with the paragraph, so I must be the odd one out for seeing a problem.

What I'm questioning is the EFFECT that subliminals have
Did you ever see a show called "The Heist" by Derren Brown? During a series of lectures, he uses a mixture of subliminal words/imagery and hypnotic language to persuade a group of ordinary law-abiding citizens to suddenly perform an armed robbery on cue - without ever knowing why they were doing it. Unless these people were stooges, that seems to me like fairly compelling evidence that such techniques can have a rather dramatic effect on a person's thinking and behaviour.
