It's all too confusing to me! My understanding on the story of Adam & Eve is that it's a metaphor for something completely different than what is commonly believed.
I look at the story and compare it with the story of the prodigal son. My understanding from the two stories is that man had a different nature than we do now, and that man gave up that condition/nature/spiritual being to become carnal, flesh and blood.
And like the prodigal son, we need to journey back home to our true nature, our spiritual being. Not mere flesh and blood.
I see a alienation of man's true being his true nature, thus the phase "in that day you will die" by putting on the physical being and leaving the spiritual being they then became subject to all the effects of the physical, rather than the spiritual. They alienated themselves from their true nature. (Life eternal)
I don't see the O.S. as something they ate, but an act of leaving their original standing and true nature with God and gaining knowledge they were not ready/mature enough to have. And even to this day I would still say man's not ready for much of the knowledge he does have, considering how man uses his knowledge today.
Before applying knowledge one should have the wisdom on the proper execution of that knowledge
In most cases man does not.
Our lack of maturity and wisdom concerning the application of knowledge is well documented, just look at the earth and how polluted it is. And the suffering caused by man and his use of technology. (smart bombs etc.)
Yes, we have gained much knowledge, too bad wisdom didn't come with it...
