Today's public talk - emotional manipulation
by mac n cheese inso i'm sitting in the kh today, and the speaker is really pretty good.
he's one of those really kind, in-it-for-others type of guys and it really comes through in his talk.
he starts reading scriptures about how j is near to those crushed in spirit, and how j will hear our cries for help.. and because we've been through the wringer with elders in the past, all the hurt that i thought i put behind me comes roaring back with a vengeance.

It's guys like that speaker that I feel sorry for, and his family, probably dragging his wife and kids around for the show.

So.....when do y'all think it'll all come crashing down around their ears?
by Lady Zombie inhow long do you think they can keep it up before even the happily brainwashed will be able to recognize that the whole thing is a bust?.
another 5 years?
i was thinking about the whole stance that when "the world" declares "peace and security", then "the end" will come.. we all know the jws just love earthquakers, hurricanes, tsunamis, 9/11s, wars, etc.

It won't. The heavily brainwashed will buy a slightly different flavour when WBTS presents it to them. It's been a success story for a long time, and they know what they're doing. Try not to live for the day, because it isn't going to happen. The best we can hope for is that the people we care about make it out in time to live a little.

How do you tell somebody that they do something that is socially awkward...
by DanTheMan in...and annoying?
my sister, who i am close with, has a tendency to talk and laugh at very high, at times even piercing volumes when she is in social situations where there is more than say, four or five people present.
it's like, her volume increases exponentially with every person that you add to the mix.

Yeah you can't really tell her; it's better that she just sees it for herself, and doesn't know that she was meant to. It might take a bit of work on your part to get her comfortable with a camera around, but you might have to.
Stuff like that, it can't be said by somebody who wants to stay in contact.

Are the "Converted" ever really accepted by those "Born In ?"
by Casper inmy old hall was made up of mostly 3 large families, with some extended added in.
all seemed to be related in one way or another, several generations represented.. coming in from the world at the age of 28, i never really felt that i belonged there.
i stuck it out for 13 years.

I definitely agree. It's probably because no convert could possibly buy it all; they'd have had enough time as an adult already to have been able to flex their conscience and intelligence on a few things. Surely they wouldn't be comfortable with surrendering every choice in their life.

Met an exJW when I was out Friday Night. His pain broke my heart.
by str8?so is spaghetti..until you heat it up ini was out friday night with a few of the friends i have made since leaving jws behind, when lo and behold, it turns out that one of their boyfriends was an exjw too!
i was excited at first, as i had not yet met someone who was exjw and gay in the flesh until now.
however, my excitement was shortlived.

Tough question, because you have to know a person very well to work out what would get through to them. Certainly don't be rabidly apostate, although that's very much in the eye of the beholder. Start with your own personal experience and what got your own head out of it.

I love Eurovision. Five minutes to the announcement here. I had money on Azerbaijan; the heaven and hell motif is timeless. It was a shame about the sock puppet.

Hobbies post Witness-still feel guilty about the time and expense involved?
by Thechickennest inmy dear wife says she has a hard time investing time and money towards hobbies.
my wife was born in to the organization.
she says she still has a difficult time not feeling guilty about activities that would take one away from the preaching work, even though she has made her exit from the organization a long time ago.

I honestly don't know how I found the time to go to those meetings and out on the preach. I guess I just didn't have anything else in my life. I was instantly relieved when I stopped all those time-wasting activities. These days I love expensive and time-hungry hobbies.

My parents are going to meet with me!
by Confession init was two years and two months ago when i told my mother that i no longer recognize the wts religion as being "the truth.
" as you may know, to a jw mother, this is like telling her you've decided to jump off a skyscraper.
i have spoken to her only two times since then, and have not seen her or my dad since then.

No; don't take the letter. Don't let them bait you into talking about it. You know that it matters nothing really. All that matters is that you're family, and that you're doing your best to make the most of the little time you get with each other. Take a lot of photos, and stories about what's been going on. If the witness stuff comes up, tell them that you've realised that it's best that you don't talk about that. Because it is; it achieves nothing but closed hearts and minds, and it hurts you all. Just ignore the big elephant in the room.
