Is Early Christianity the Basis For JW Practices?

did the early christians ask the public for donations to fund their ministry or other works?.

did the early christians encourage believers to distribute communications from the apostles and older men in jerusalem to the public as a primary part of their ministry?.

I agree with Minimus. The JWs do not follow the example of early Christians. They take everything out of context and they are like the Pharisees of Jesus' day, trying to force men to follow the Law that Jesus fulfilled.

I was just thinking the last couple of days about the way the JW's go door-to-door supposedly obeying the scripture about 'preaching the good news'. The modern world is a lot different than Jesus' time--there are churches everywhere and the Bible is available to almost anyone in the world. I don't think door-to-door is necessary for spreading Christianity in the modern world, I think it's just something the JW's are taking out of context in the Bible. But then they aren't true Christians anyway, they're a cult.

I hope I don't sound preachy because I really don't mean it to come off like that.

Does Devil Talk Irritate You?

i enjoy reading the bible on my own since i left the jw's.

i get extremely irritated when other people talk to me about how satan is causing certain things in my life--example is if i'm not getting along with a coworker or anything like that.

(my husband also blames satan).

Why does it irritate me so much? Is it because it reminds me of how the JW's used to blame everything on the devil? A lot of Christians do that too, and I'm sorry but I don't believe that every little thing that goes wrong is due to Satan. Some things are just circumstantial.

Do you get irritated at this?

Thanks Blondie for all the great posts--you are very knowledgeable! I don't think I would have the stomach or the patience to spend that much time on the WS literature. I really appreciate the fact that you are able to share all that info.

Why do you post here?

for me, it's mainly the money and the women, i suppose.. no, but seriously, i was thinking the other day about why i post here.

in september it will be two years since i left the organization.

i don't much care for doctrinal debates anymore, and i usually pass on threads that are concerned with he-said-she-said kind of stuff inside the organization.

Well I'm relatively new still to the forum, but I have learned sooooo much the last 2 months about the JW organization that I didn't have a clue about before. I have been out for many years, but only started researching the last couple years more so the last few months. So one of the reasons I post is to learn more from other people. I don't feel trapped by the JW thinking anymore--that has left me the more I learn.

But like you, I also really feel inclined to be helpful to others who are trying to free themselves. I don't want to see other people lose years of their lives being unhappy and feeling trapped by false beliefs. I feel like I'm on a mission to teach people who don't have any knowledge of the WS, to beware of the JW's who come knocking on their doors. I'm even working on my own little tract, but I'm not sure if I'll ever distribute it; right now it's more like a hobby.

Twin Towers\ Armageddon

hey all this may have been mentioned before.

i was thinking last night about when the twin towers fell and i remembered thinking how close armageddon must be did anybody else think similar....i guess it would only apply to those who were still in the borg at the time es

I didn't think it was Armageddon, but I do remember thinking to myself "Oh boy, I wonder if all the JW's are seeing this as a sign of the end." And of course I felt a lot of anger toward the people responsible--some of the anger is a helpless kind of feeling, because you can't punish the people who actually did the bombing when they're dead too.

I cried a lot for 2 weeks--I think it hit me harder than it would have because I was at the airport that morning and supposed to have been on a flight to LA. I worked for an emergency state agency at the time, so I had to go back to work immediately at 7:30 in the morning instead of going home like all most other people.

I just had a bawl at work this afternoon and it took me by surprise because I couldn't stop crying.

I am getting annoyed at one of the secretaries in my office who was offended at an email I wrote to her last week--I already apologized to her last week. So today she brings it up at a meeting in front of other people, then she says she would really like it if people let her know by phone when we come back from lunch (she glances at me) if she has our phones forwarded to her--she snapped at me 2 weeks ago because she didn't like it when I called her to tell her I was leaving my desk because she wanted me to email her. Then she says that she doesn't like it when people go behind her back and talk about her (glances in my direction), another girl pipes up that people do approach her to vent frustrations--I thought they were talking about me so I left the meeting to go to the bathroom and started crying. I'm sure you probably don't really understand the above situation without being there.

Anyway, I feel really stressed out and pissed off at the other secretary. I guess tomorrow I will approach her and let her know I didn't appreciate her bringing up stuff at the meeting that had already been taken care of.

I am having a bad week and it started Sunday when I found out my 15 year old step son smokes pot and has been sexually active for over a year; he had lied to us and said he was going to a skating birthday party Saturday night but spent the evening at a friends house and the neighbors complained about the noise--they were getting high and getting it on with some other teens. Anyway the lying upsets me--I already suspected that he lies to us quite often. I get upset when he lies and my kids get blamed for his behavior.

Anyway, it's a 3 day weekend coming up so I know things will get better. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest--I feel like crying some more.

Regrets

just wondering:.

do you every regret the way you treated or shunned faders, d/a, or d/f people in the past while you wonder under the influence of the "cult".. if so have you every gone back to any of those people said that you were sorry?.

i ask because there are a few people in my past that i discarded so easily and quickly, i am really conidering tracking them down in the hopes of making amends.. i don't know if it would do any good, but i know that i would feel better.

I have no way to contact people I used to shun--it was over 20 years ago. But let me say this publicly--I apologize sincerely to anyone I might have shunned in Sacramento, California in the 1970's & 1980's. Looking back, I'm ashamed of myself.

Welcome and I know you will meet new friends here who understand what you are going through. It is tough trying to have a normal social life after being shunned by friends and family. Many here have had very difficult experiences with family members that they have survived--you will too!

I empathize with you and know exactly what you mean. For years after I faded, I had a black cloud over my head that any minute Jehovah was going to destroy me for leaving the JWs. Time and knowledge have healed me spiritually--but it didn't happen overnight. Try reading the New Testament in a different version; just read the Bible by itself with no Watchtower and no NWT and compare the teachings of Jesus to the way JW's treat people. It's been a real eye-opener for me that the Watchtower twists the scriptures, takes things out of context, and does not encourage Christ-like love to fellow humans. I recommend this even to people who don't believe in God or the Bible anymore--it really affirms in your mind how evil and cultish the WBTS is.

I wish you much success in your spiritual journey, wherever it leads you.

me and my ex--who wont show up so i will be there all alone.

i am still unsure of how i feel about the whole thing.
