Public speaking, became adept doing extemporaneous off the cuff speaking, which many times has served me well.....being a jw also gave me a voracious appetite for reading, read everything I could get my hands on......nothing else of importance....

NEW YEAR STRATEGY: CHOOSE your BATTLEGROUND carefully!
by Terry inabraham lincoln was once challenged to a duel to the death when he offended somebody.. as the one challenged, it was his right to pick the weapons and the place of battle.. lincoln's challenger was a short fellow and an expert marksman.
don't fight in magic land.. .
no, not their interpretation---the bible itself!.

Choose your Battleground carefully .... Start with a study of Bible history. How we got the Bible cannon of today. Why some books were chosen, others rejected. This especially holds true for the so called NT.
Then delve into Bible translations. There were 5 or 6 complete English translations before the KJV came into existence. Most of them were based on the Latin Vulgate. As far as I can remember the uniqueness of the KJV was the fact it was translated by committee. It to relied on the Latin Vulgate, and the previous English versions.
Take the time to do that. Look at both sides of the issue, pro and con. Do that and you will at the very least have a better understanding of what the Bible is.

Anti-Apostate blog has fascinating articles, photos and opinions!
by Terry inthe governing body of jehovah's witnesses has decided (oct., 2000) that the positions of president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, etc.
in the legal corporations (e.g., watch tower bible and tract society of pennsylvania, watchtower bible and tract society of new york, inc.,) do not have to be filled by anointed brothers.
therefore, all of the brothers that were currently holding these positions, all of whom were on the governing body, have resigned.

Lucinda__first love.....prison and Jehovah's Witnesses
by Terry inin 1967 i couldn't play piano or any other musical instrument.
but, i could chord with my left hand and peck out melody in my right hand!.
in fact, i was quite compelled to compose music the way teenagers are often overwrought with hormone driven compulsions to express themselves!

Your Thoughts, Please (Seriously)...
by AGuest inmay you all have peace!.
on occasion, dear ones post questions on the board that have a "legal" undertone.
sometimes those questions are just trying to get a sense of what questions such one should ask (perhaps of an attorney), sometimes they have to do with very ordinary events, and sometimes they really do require in-depth legal assistance/analysis.
-
Quentin
If I want "legal advice, or opinion" I'll consult with my attorney, who more often than not will give it based on case law.
If I want to see what others think I'll ask a question, or post an opinion. Everyone is entitled to give their "opinion", or "advice" as they see fit. If it sounds "legal" WHO CARES ? This is a discussion board, we discuss a wide range of topics, with many here who are professionals in their education and work. No need to qualify your point of view, say what you think, let it go at that.

WE CAN DO THIS....if you think the idea is as good as I do!
by Terry ini have long had an idea that i think is a very powerful tool in reaching even hard-nosed jw's.. .
it would consist only of actual photographic scans of various documents, articles, photographs such as these from marvin shilmer's blog: (see next panel).
there would be no extraneous non-official text whatsoever.. it would be published the size of an old life magazine and sent anonymously to jw's at their homes.. the cover would clearly contain the words: "all contents originally published by watchtower bible &tract society".

Ridiculous elder ideas and rules
by Juan Viejo2 inin an earlier thread, i went off topic for a moment to share excerpts from an email i received from an active sister living in the midwest usa.
she mentioned that the elders in her congregations were extremely conservative and criticized the flock for using certain colors of highlighters in their magazines.
she also reported that they were all over the sisters for wearing stylish boots or tennis shoes during the winter months.. i know that some elder groups can be very liberal, supportive and loving toward their flocks - while others are exactly opposite to the point that they become overbearing and oppressive.. what have you experienced as far as ridiculous, over-the-top rules and ideas enforced by local elders?.

Highlighters?.....we used pencils and pens to UNDERLINE comments...wonder what kind of trouble I'd get in these days, eh?

Anybody know anything about Scooters?
by Terry ini have never ridden/driven a motorcycle or a scooter.
but, i'm thinking about getting one.. in fact, a chinese scooter!.
they get 100 mpg on gasoline and they are under $900 bucks.. .

Joe Tosti rode a Lambretta all over Poly. That was a sight to see. Dad was a BIG motorcycle rider, except the years he spent as a jw. In Texas you have to be licensed. Take a written and driving test. Insurance on a moped/scooter/motorcycle is outrageous. I looked into it several years ago.
Put the money into your Honda, to many idiot drivers would run you over around here.

CoCo's Canine Chronicles, part 2
by compound complex ini walk the streets, morning, noon and night, leash in one hand, blue "doggie bag" the other.
jake and i are quite a sight, as he's a handsome, gentle brute of a golden retriever with tawny mane and grey muzzle.
we're twins for looks but, otherwise, his prancing about on all fours contrasts sharply with my making do on two.

CoCo's Canine Chronicles
by compound complex ini'm not what you would call a dog person.
of course, it's true that, next to the television's remote control, dog is man's best friend.
perhaps my justified ambivalence toward poochicus biteyourbuttabit is due to too many an untoward encounter with the snarling, hydrophobic malevolence of a fido, a rover, a rin tin tin, intent on my evisceration.

Ah dogs. Raised one when I was a young lad, she was house broke, well mannered, sleeping under my bed on folded blanket. Mother was always kind enough to wash the blankets about every 10 days, otherwise all dog duties fell on me. Patches was an English Shepard mixed with what I do not know. I had her for five years, was 18 when she died of distemper. Cried like a baby when I took her to the backside of the garden for burial.
Kathy had, when we married, two Poodles, one a black tea cup, one a blond miniature. Chere the tea cup tolerated me. Took me several months to become the alpha in Minion's world. Minoan always waited at the front door for me to return from work. I had established myself over her and took her for walks without a leash. Can't say Minoan adored me, but responded to voice commands and hand signals 98% of the time. She had become my dog.
When Kathy became pregnant we were advised by a number of folks the Poodle's had to go as they were a very jealous type of dog. We gave the tea cup to Kathy's mother. When Kathy was 7 months along she took Minoan out to do her business. Minoan got under Kathy's feet and caused Kathy to fall off the raised back porch ( we lived in a studio apt ). The fall crushed Kathy's right elbow, Minoan ran off, we never found her.
Our daughter was four, we had a Siamese cat, but she wanted a dog. By then we lived in a house with a large fenced yard. Kathy and our daughter went to the SPCA and brought home a Cinnamon Labrador Retriever, named Cinnamon of course. The cat and dog became best buds. Three years later we had to leave both behind in Monroe La. with a veterinarian who promised he would find them a "good home". I hope he did, I missed Cinnamon she was the second best dog I ever had.
For the last 26 yrs we have populated the household with cat's. Now my 8 yr. old grandson wants a dog. Don't know if I could, or have the needed patience to train another dog. I could tell you many amusing stories about our cat's and dog's. Think I'll save them for the writers corner.
