  1974 Bethel BOMBING

  the new york times of november 19, 1974 reports a bethel building had first and second floor windows blown out by a pipe bomb exploded in its doorway.

  an apartment building across the street sustained damage, too.

  does anyone here know more about this incident?.

  I was at Bethel at that time. Remember hearing it go off early morning. About 500 yds away from point of detonation. At that distance it was very loud. Do not recall if they ever found person or a specific reason given.

  They paid you in CASH??! What years were you there? How much of that $100 went to subways to attend your congregation's Kingdom Hall? When I entered it was $18/month. When I left it was $35 if I recall. Used to be a running joke amongst some of my friends...how many meetings can you afford to miss... so you can have more money for beer, pizza, and weekend trips.

  My life after Bethel

  thank you for this place in cyber space, this is therapy for me.

  there is something about writing things down, that helps put things in perspective........ the day i left it was pouring rain........i really screwed up, i found out the night before, as i was packing things up, that i had way under estimated how much stuff i had.

  i had two large suit cases (that i could barely shut the lids on) and a large army duffel bag.

  I remember when I was told I had 30 days to leave Bethel. Something about getting fired that makes one outlook a bit more focused. My book study conductor is df'd for "apostasy". In typical Bethel elder mentality I was guilty also. The fact that I never really hung around with the guy except at the book study was enough. We almost never even traveled together back and forth to the book study. During the judial committee meeting two of the elders knew this was bullshit, and the third could not get rid of me soon enough. A number of years later I came back for a visit. The one elder, that I had been good friends with, told me that I got caught in the cross fire-collaterial damge. I had no problem with this, it was time to leave anyway--had enough. The other elder who could not wait to get rid of me, was my work boss. What an incompetent manager. I had about 15 people working under me and we were always at odds about management style. He was later removed from being a floor overseer. Apparently everyone eventually hated working under this guy. Just because one is an elder does not automatically make you a leader of men--in a production environment. An simple obvious fact lost on the upper management at Bethel.

  Anyway, I am told 30 days to be gone. I get a vehicle through a vehicle delivery service and am gone a week later. Twelve weeks later I start college. Got canned at just the right time.

  "MARKED" as undesireable association because of college

  "i" who was marked as someone bad to associate with simply because i wanted to make enough to support my family and the approved professions (which our congregation was already saturated with) of window washers, carpet cleaners, janitorial services, and siding and window replacement workers did not appeal to me.

  Thank goodness I went to a congregation where most of the elders had college degrees or at least some college time. Those that did not, some of their kids were in college.

  My Bethel Experience Part 10

  there were guys at bethel, who had great jobs........like don brouex.....he was the receptionist at the 124 desk....checking in and "checking out" ......all the bethel tours and "hot" sisters......on there way through the "home tour"............that my friend, is not a real bethel job.. there were guys at bethel, that had great congergations with maybe only 2-4 bethelities in their halls.

  one hall, midtown had over 80 bethelites there.............. 3 old ladies 4 kids and a dog.

  odds of getting a home cook meal on sunday 0%.

  When I was at Bethel the head of my table mentioned he had a car. One day he is walking to work and his car drives by him. And the driver is no one he recognized and that was the end of his car as his car as it disappeared into the horizon.

  Economy?

  has the supposely slowed down economy affected you or do you find yourself having all the money you need and your job holding up well?

  do you own or rent?.

  Over the last six years my base income has gone up $30k. So far so good. Just took a salaried position where my income will rise another 30%. Yeah, college does pay off...

  Do you own or rent? >> own

  If you needed a new car , or wanted to take a trip could you do so? Do you still go out to eat at nice places or do you have at home? >>Company car, which makes for less hassles. No insurance, maintainance, gas cost to worry about. I do enough company traveling as is, 90-plus days last year. Thats enough restaurant eating.

  Would you be in worse shape if you stayed a JW, using all your gas up driving around the country, going to assemblies, contributing at the Hall, buying literature etc.? >> You bet, money never did magically appear.

  Outaservice (does anyone want to lend me $100,000) >> My girlfriend has $72,000 of loaned cash from me, so sorry no help here...

  Drinking (booze) among "Gods" people......More then ever now?

  looking back its amazing how many alcoholics i knew in the "borg"...................... there are 3 elders in my old hall alone........ that are full blown alcoholics...................... when, have you ever heard of someone.......anyone.......let alone and elder............ getting "dfed" for drinking too much?.

  when i was at bethel........you wouldn't believe how much drinking was done there!.

  there are stories of the old days ( russell & the judge)..where they would find guys passed out in front of the 124 building on sunday mornings........no big deal, just dust them off.............. and bring in.

  Having been at Bethel during the 70's I can concur with the drinking. When I traveled with other Bethelites and Bethel Elders we would openly drink beer in the car. I remember once when we stopped for gas and got out of the car, a good number of empty beer bottles fell out of the car. The gas attendent gave "that look". Thankfully he did not call the police...

  Teen bullied to death

  if i had a kid who was being bullied... they better tie me up... there's no telling what i might do to the bullies.

  When I was in high school a guy (non-JW) in same grade (11th) got verbally picked on all the time, especially by the jocks. He was short, probably weighed all of 90 lbs...soaking wet, and other charatericstics that made him ripe for being picked on.

  One day in gym class the PE instructor announces that today the local karate club will be putting on a demo. The club walks out. The last guy to walk out is the guy who gets picked on constantly. This of course picques everyones interest. Each member is introduced and their belt rating is stated. The picked on guy has a black belt. When this is mentioned one of the jocks who picked on this guy is sitting behind me, upon hearing that he mutters in a whisper, "oh $hit..."

  Demos commence and mr. black belt is impressively breaking boards, which probably sounds like breaking bones to the guy behind me.

  Needless to say never a cruel word was uttered again to this guy. Some of the jocks when they passed him in the hallway actually would address him as Mr. _____.
