Just to add one more note....You may be interested in the "Perry Mason" anology. If you've ever seen one of the old PM tv shows you know that the Prosecuting attorney makes a case that is so convincing one would have to be mad not to deem the poor slob anything but guilty. Then along comes Perry, et al and with a little sleuthing, a slightly different twist of testimony and BINGO, the truth of the matter is revealed. the once falsely accused is found to be totally innocent. I've always waited to cast judgement as there are so many ways of interpreting data, and intuition being the extension of past experiance, I don't totally trust my intuition. It needs testing and trial, which means sometimes a little sufferage and patience. Eventually the truth is discovered and reality begins to emerge.. Trust me, you are fully capable of finding reality if your motives are pure! be well, carmel

If You Were Wrong About The JWs, Maybe Your Current Beliefs Aren't True
by serotonin_wraith inif you're here, it's likely you were once fooled by what the jws believe.. back then, i expect you thought you were smart.
you thought you could tell if you were being lied to.
yet, they got past your mental defenses and sucked you in.. knowing this, how can you be sure your current religious beliefs are true?.

When I left the borg I was very skeptical about all religion. Remained so for nearly twenty years. With a degree in Zoology, Masters in related field, one would think I would be a candidate for remaining either an atheist or better yet agnostic, but it was my formal education in both the hard sciences and in other humanities that allowed me to be "scientific' about judging the claims of a religion. To this day I am open to a better explanation (cosmology) but I don't see it iterated here on JWD or anywhere else my path of inquiry takes me. Of course my religious beliefs are so different than what one typically encounters in Christianity..... be well, carmel

A little about me
by MominAustin ini, too, was raised as a jw.
my mom still goes to the meetings and out in service when she can, but due to age, she has some troubles (she's 69 and legally blind).

That "true christian church.." of which you speak should not be putting pressure of any kind on you. They should be ashamed! Someone should call them to account!! I wish you well! carmel

We have three greart museums in our small town of 10,000. The largest is the Maritime Museum which has so many artifacts it takes all day to go through it. Being at the mouth of the Columbia River it is the site of thousands of ship wrecks where early seafarers tried to cross the bar and lost their lives. All kinds of great stuff! Another is the Flavel House, the early mansion built by Captain Flavel who owned practically everything in town, a dairy, a saw mill, several salmon canneries, dry goods stores and houses of lesser repute. He made is millions though as a government contractor providing pilotage for ships to cross the bar and sail up the river to Portland, Or. He parlayed that into a bevy of trained pilots that had a monoply on the service and forced the big shipping companies to pay an exhorbant fee for pilotage. Kinda like our vp and his sole service contracts in Iraq. Oh, sorry Haliburton and Dick are divorced.....or not! carmel

raising kids without a religion - thoughts, advice?
by atpeace inok, thinking about taking the leap and starting a family.
i've held back for years because of this subject.
almost entire family are jw's, but my husband and i haven't been for many years and have no desire to raise children as one, or any other organized religion.

We raised our five children with the notion that we would not inflict religion upon them. Midway through family development my wife and I became Baha'is and were pleased to see the children's classes at the Baha'i center taught about all the religions. When the kids got old enough to go to church with their friends we encouraged them to go and learn. Almost invariably they were not asked back a second time, not that they misbehaved, but that the pastors or elders, etc. were very uncomfortable with youth that could hold their own in a discussion about religion. They expected ignorant zombies who could be easily swayed by the regalia and ceremony, but alas our kids asked questions, volunteered opinions and ideas that made them too uncomfortable. I strongly reccomend that you allow them to investigate, to compare and to take ownership of what ever they decide is "truth". We never insisted our kids attend Baha'i meetings with us but over time they chose on their own to participate as it was intellectually stimulating, socially expanding and "spiritually" fulfilling. Your kids may find a totally different path than you, but they will own it and you should embrace that, be it atheist, agnostic, wiccan or any other belief system. carmel

I am forever amazed at the abuse people will perpetrate upon others in the name of religion! Anyone telling me I can't "comment" on any matter best have a big stick to knock me out. I simply refuse to be silenced when I feel the need to express myself. Shakin my head..... carmel
