I got a web-based email service (I use yahoo, but I hear gmail is good too) and use that addy for accounts and things. Haven't had to change anything for six years now and I'm on my 5th isp (so far so good with Yahoo/DSL).

Jehovah saved Michael Jackson!?
by Gill inso, there i was quietly dropping off to sleep while listening to the news at 10 on the bbc last night.
suddenly, michael jackson had been found not guilty of everything, and fair enough, i'm no judge or jury so it's not up to me to say yay or nay.. then my eldest son rushes into the bedroom on the phone to his jw full time pioneer girl friend.. her father had just told her that michael jackson had given credit to jehovah, that if he should be found not guilty of these charges his great god jehovah is the one that saved him and the girls elder father was saying what a wonderful witness this is, letting everyone in the world hear jehovah's name.. the best i could mumble at the time was 'go away you bunch of freaks!'.
however, the ludicrousness of this has finally dawned on me this morning!.

From several things I've read and seen, there's this weird love/hate relationship between JW's and MJ. For some, there's a certain pride that such a famous person was raised "one of us" (which you see a with other famous JW's too...celebrity worship is alive and well in the borg). Others are embarrassed to be associated with him in any way and have been for a long time.
The idea that Jehovah would specially bless this mess of a man who prays with *gasp* evil Christendom's clergy (what happened to the "jealous God" who doesn't allow messing with the "great harlot"?), who has brought His name into the public eye in such a negative way, and who doesn't seem to have much of a grasp on reality, let alone what's expected of JW, should be ludicrous and insulting to faithful dubs. H*ll, I find it insulting and I don't consider myself one of them any more. I guess if you are rich and famous, the rules are bent to the point of breakage for you (at least in some people's minds).
Guess MJ must have some really important role to play in Jehovah's grand scheme of things for Him to intervene on his behalf this way.

Cook at home or eat out?
by greendawn indo you know how to cook, even just a few simple recipes, or do you hate the idea of home cooking and prefer to always rely on restaurants and take aways, or just prepare easy snacks like sandwiches and melted cheese on toast?

Sounds yummy, jeannie! My mother makes a killer lasagna too. I find it a chore, so I don't bother with it (so lazy). I will make eggplant parm, though. I love the stuff...and it's easier. LOL

I'm not sure what to tell ya, tsunami. If it was me, I'd probably try to get through the DC with as little fuss as possible. It's great for you that you aren't being required to go all three days...nice to be able to break it up.
It appears that your parents are pretty liberal. I know many a dub parent (myself included, I'm very sorry to say) who would not have allowed a party with non-JW friends. Sorry I have no great ideas about organizing your party...I'm not a great party giver. Perhaps someone else will weigh in with some ideas. I'm somewhat surprised about the mixed drinks thing...you talking alcoholic beverages?
As for Hawaii, my only thoughts are to try give your family some of your time...I'm sure they'd appreciate it. Other than that, I have no advice. Just have fun!

Did anyone find the DC encouraging?
by sweet tee ini remember going to the assemblies and conventions and feeling encouraged by the information that was presented.
in hindsight, i may have just felt that way because that's how you were supposed to feel.
i was a 100% brainwashed fool for many years, if the gb said it, i did, i felt it and i believed it .

SNG, very true on the weird "language of the Dubs". It's pretty bizaar looking at it from the outside now. At the time I was immersed in Dub culture, I thought it was neato...we belonged to a special club with our own buzz words. ...which brings me back to the DC's (again...ugh. Wish I wasn't having trouble getting to sleep tonight! lol). I do remember feeling thrilled to be a member of such a extra special group. Even if it was a trial to get through the three or four days of the convention, there was as sense of belonging to something greater than mere humans could conceive of (I thought), a sense of combined purpose and a shared vision of the grand future awaiting obedient mankind (us). It was somewhat heady....while it lasted.

When I first started going to these things I think my sons were 9 and 6. They were good kids, but it was still a challenge for us to make it through the days with our tempers intact. I certainly felt something when each day was over that I may have taken for encouragment. Looking back, I think the feeling was really a combination of relief that it was over and pride that we'd done it.In later years, I couldn't even get a finish-line buzz out of the DC's. I'd feel tired, discouraged and beat down. The talks and experiences all seemed the same, and the convention themes appeared to recycle (with different wording) every few years so that you got this strange sense of déjà vu. Eventually, I started only attending on weekend days, then only the final day.....and then I didn't go at all.

Governing Body and rank and file liabilities
by greendawn ini get the impression that generally the rank and file jws are to be thought of as victims whereas the governing body are the real and only villains in this organisation.
.
do you think this is a valid opinion especially when it comes to the elders and circuit/district overseers who willingly enforce the gb's often criminal policies?

I'm having a hard time formulating an answer to this, but here goes.
I think so many of us bought into this utopian dream world and wanted it to be true so damn badly that it took a lot of years, a lot of disappointment, a lot of unhappiness, and a lot of cognitive dissonance (I love that term) to finally wake up and see that it's a sham.
Some will never wake up...they don't want to. They will stay nestled in the cozy little mindset that they are Jah's people and in line for extra special treatment if only they can hang on until the "end", doing everything the GB tells them to...whether its dying from refusing a blood transfusion to cruely shunning friends and relatives who are ejected. The illusion is more important than reality for them, and they will strike out viciously if you try to burst their bubble. Reason and proof have no meaning in their lives because they choose the fantasy...no matter what.
It's hard for me to believe that some throughout the borg, from the top down, aren't fully aware that its all a con. How can they see some of the behind the scenes crap that they do and not know it's all a lie? How can they make policies to hide pedophiles within the congregations and truly believe that they are working for "God's" organization here on earth? It would be great if there was actually a place of torment waiting for people like this.
So, who gets the blame? Seems like there's plenty to go around at all levels, but ultimately (imo), the lion's share falls on those who claim a special relationship with Jesus...those who say they are Jehovah's channel on the earth or who work closely with these chosen ones. With great power comes great responsibility.
