  Could a Baptism be Null and Void based on Circumstances?

  what if you get baptized as a minor?

  does it really legally hold up?

  or how about it if your baptism has basically felt like a fraud to you because you did it for the wrong reasons?

  In the current round of CO visits with the BOEs, there is a specific point regarding this that is read to the elders. I don't recall the exact wording, but the gist is, "if anyone tries to come up and say they want their baptism nullified, they're SOL. We don't 'do' baptism nullifications".

  And there were also some references to some Watchtower articles from the 50's or 60's. I did not look them up.

  There was another poster (don't recall who) here who explained this in a little more detail, a few months back.

  I.e., the GB are well aware of this particular kind of "trick", and are forewarning the elders to watch out for it, and are telling them not to allow it.

  i was reading the dan sydlik thread and blondie's post with the remaining gbs ages got me thinking.. the guys who are dying off now and have been for the past 5-10 years are the guys who oversaw the fast growing organization that was rolling in money and members.

  they're the guys from the 70s,80s and 90s.

  Perhaps, but one could argue that this shift from "old" to "new" has been under way for quite some time now.

  Barber is 100+, Schroeder was basically incapacitated for years before his death, Barr is 90+....How much influence did these old-timers have in GB meetings? Do they still attend? Can / could they make any sort of meaningful contribution?

  I would maintain that the "new GB" has been in effect for at least 5 years. The effect may be more pronounced in the next few years, as the 2 new members begin to flex their muscles, and possibly 2 more new members are added to replace Schroeder & Sydlik.

  don't current jw's wonder why they don't replace gb members with 'annointed' still living?

  i realize there are not that many left and are quite old but wouldn't they rather have an annointed one in the gb?

  All GB members are anointed. There are now several (in fact, the majority) who are "young anointed", i.e., baptized after 1935, but still counted as "anointed". The official spin is that such "young anointed" ones are replacements for unfaithful anointeds who died unfaithful.

  Of course, it's still a good question why JWs don't question why there are so many "replacements"--why were so many of the "old-timer" anointeds unfaithful?

  The short answer is as Blondie has noted--they are not trained to think at all.

  Pink slips at Bethel

  does anyone still have any friends at bethel?

  it seems that there is a massive layoff at bethel in all three american complexes.

  the layoff is supposed to affect everyone between the ages of 35-50 or maybe 60. i feel sorry for persons who chose to stay there, they gave up going to college, possible job offers or making a decent amount of money, having children, the list can go on and on.

  Have you heard this from an "official source", or is it just speculation on your part?

  Financially, I agree that is the demographic that is most likely to be affected, but that is just my opinion. I have not heard anything "official" that that is the target.

  I would love to know if that is the "official" decree.

  Maybe the U.S. Department of Justice would be the proper place to send THE BOOK .

  Excellent suggestion. Just scan and publish the handwritten pages in back first.

  It is precisely for that reason that the most sensitive stuff is always read aloud, never distributed in printed form. If push comes to shove, and somehow that book becomes the centerpiece of some sort of trial or legal action, the Society's claim would be "Hey, we have no control over the personal notes an elder writes in the margins of his book". I.e., they would deny that this is their official policy, and claim it is an interpretation that the elder who owned the book came up with on his own.

  Ever try to get a CO to show you one of those pieces of paper that they read from in an elders-only meeting? I tried to get a look at the paper explaining that if someone accepts blood, he is not D-F'ed, but is "considered to have disassociated himself based on his actions". You'd think I was asking to see the secret code book with the nuclear launch sequences.

  Now, if someone (a lurking CO, for example) were to scan copies of those hidden documents, that are read aloud but never distributed, something written with the Society's letterhead, dated & signed, etc., then you might have something...

  One of these days, the wrong (right?) CO or DO is going to get shafted by the Society, grow a backbone, and bring them a world of hurt...

  how does a benevolent and loving god explain away his ecological system whose very persistence relies on the killing and suffering of animals that have fear and pain receptors and know when they are about to get it?

  can the personilaty attributes religions have given this god be reconciled with his creation?

  Indeed.

  If you do not confess, they will need at least 2 witnesses to testify.

  If you really want to have fun, you can "cross-examine" said witnesses to ask what they were doing visiting such a blatantly apostate site.

  In one of my previous congregations, we had a pioneer sister who bought a big honkin' late 60's / early 70's vintage Checker (if you're not familiar with them, think of the cars in the 70's TV show "Taxi").

  It was enormous. You could easily sit 5 people in the back seat, all of whom could stretch their legs straight out in front of them and not hit the front seat. She would take it out in service all the time. I can only imagine what people thought as this behemoth pulled up on their street.

  WTS explanation of how old the earth is

  i grew up as a jw believing that each creative day was a thousand years each.

  man was created on the seventh day and man's existence on earth was supposed to have been six thousand years back in 1975.. however, this wt article on reconciling science and the bible says something different that i never picked up on in my later years as a jw.

  (i guess i blocked it out better than i thought)for example, when we understand that the bible uses the term "day" to represent various periods of time, we see that the account of the six creative days in genesis need not conflict with the scientific conclusion that the age of the earth is about four and a half billion years.

  Umm, hate to state the obvious, but....

  In teaching that the creative days were exactly 7000 years long, wasn't the society effectively saying that all plant and animal life were less than 50,000 years old, which, oh, I don't know, could be construed as "an unscriptural teaching that has caused many to ridicule the Bible"?

  The article cited above completely ignores the fact that belief in literal 7000 year long creative days was an offical doctrine taught well into the 80's (and still believed by many many old-timers who may not have noticed that the figure is not used any more).

  Who was the poster who described the Society as having "cunning to burn"? The above article is a shining example of this.
