4 sincere questions for those that believe there is a God

greetings.. allow me to set the questions up.. after 30 years in the truth (i'm now late 40's) and having established the truth about the truth i consider myself agnostic going on atheist.. i struggle to believe there is a god when i observe life yet i try to convince myself there must be something out there.. here's the basis of my question: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23583116 .

in summary, 2 young boys have been killed by a snake that escaped from a pet store in canada.

it made it's way up through the ventilation into the apartment they were staying in.

I mean... ignore 'do not murder'... and you have screwed up your life AND many others' lives, all in one go.

'God' isn't the source of laws about not murdering people. Quite early on in human society, it was recognised that mutual trust is beneficial in human social groups, and going around murdering people disrupts that trust. Of course that doesn't mean no one will ever murder anyone, because an individual's own motivations sometimes outweigh the social construct. It's nothing to do with 'God'.

The 'God' of the Bible is purportedly responsible for instructing people to murder though.

Personality Disorders Attracted to JWism

are there personality disorders that find the watchtower an appealing fit?

i have read it before that people with personality issues are attracted to extreme religions, and that extreme religions can make a "normal" person mentallly ill. .

to start off with, i was reading about obsessive-compulsive disorders and this "profile" seemed like the "normal" jws i know:.

Many people may occasionally exhibit mild forms of any or all of the symptoms listed, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are clinically obsessive-compulsive.

That said, the highly regimented lifestyle of JWs does add some 'stability' for people with various mental illnesses, and may encourage obsessive behaviour in people already predisposed to it. With the exception of the inherent religious delusions (which are broadly considered within the realms of 'normal'), JWs do not necessarily have any particular mental illness.

However, those who join (not 'born-in') usually do so at some low point in their life, which could relate to mental illness, but most of the time more likely relates to other factors such as substance abuse, a death in the family, or some other personal tragedy.

It's self-referencing and redundant.

Short of eradicating them because it's an irrelevant and demeaning invasion of privacy, don't make it 3 against 1, make them actually confidential instead of reporting to 'branch office' (a breach of clergy-penitent privilege), abolish shunning, don't use emotional blackmail, audio or video recording is the choice of the accused, legal representation and moral support allowed.

There are different types of evidence, Jeffro. Some types are considered more acceptable than others

You haven't offered any evidence. And there's a good reason why some supposed evidence is not valid.

Yes, I'm familiar with your tendency to toy with semantics. Call it what you like. Your magical signals from Jesus still won't be real.

I do have evidence... just none that you are willing to accept, at least not without experiencing Him yourself.

If you 'know' that I'm not willing to accept your 'evidence', it is because you know that it doesn't actually qualify as such.

Well, this is just a claim too, is it not? You can certainly make it of course... and you'll just be wrong.

No. Because the specific claim we're talking about is your claim that you've received special insights from Jesus. You have no evidence of this. None. Nothing.

This leading question is attempting to shift the goalposts, by juxtaposing the irrational with the unknown.

Well, yes, you can "claim" to know anything at all. You'll just be wrong.

But even that source says that the SPIRIT will teach.

Which is basically the same as, "A magic thing will happen." It's rubbish.

I don't think you know my personal opinions to be able to make the statement that you made about me above though.

Inspired means... in the spirit. So that a person was in the spirit, receiving FROM the Spirit... and that was written down. John in Revelation was 'in the spirit' and received from the Spirit. So that book is inspired. The prophets received from the Spirit, so their visions/dreams/etc... are inspired.

I know the tedious semantics. "In the spirit" is an entirely empty meaningless definition with no demonstrable mechanism. It's just a claim. Absolutely nothing more.
